Price for a new doll

Nov 26, 2012

    1. How often do you let price factor in your decision for a new doll/secondhand doll?

      Are you the type who tries to stay within a budget and look for dolls within that? Or look buy them separately to fit it in the budget you need? First doll was cheap or did you go all out as you got into the hobby? Or price is a factor but made easier with layaways/savings?

      Like to hear your opinions, would sorta help the type of doll im getting :3

    2. I have hard limits, especially since I don't Layaway. XD;

      I'm entirely too likely to take a gander at the price of a doll, and if it's too high for me, I'll just move on. Realistically, for me right now? 900$ and 1000$+ for a doll is just too darned much, regardless of how much I want it. Things may change as I make more money? But. For the moment? Hahahahano.

      I don't think I've ever spent $800 on the doll itself. I try not to spend over $700, in fact. I'll even cut corners like opt out of face ups or certain clothing/seam sanding/accessory options if it'll help me get the doll into a range where I'm more comfortable.

      This is sort of why I lineface when companies don't give you the option to choose what parts you actually WANT, and just kind of lump it all in together. Sure, the extra parts are nice and all? But. Uh. I don't want to pay for things I won't be using, and I probably wouldn't bother trying to sell them or run/join splits even though that'd be the practical answer. Because if I had to pay for them, they're MINE gosh darnit. >.>;

    3. I guess I let the price factor in on my decision a little bit. For my first doll I didn't want to get something too expensive in case I don't enjoy the hobby, so I opted for one of the cheaper dolls I was interested in. Granted, I want dolls that are cheap as well as dolls that are expensive, so I figure I'll go for what I can afford at the time. I certainly wouldn't be opting to buy a doll I wasn't particularly interested in just because the one I wanted was more expensive though. Basically price just helps me decide what order I buy dolls in! lol

    4. I generally don't let price be a factor on which doll I get first. All my dolls represent characters, so I choose based on which is more important story-wise. I do have a certain amount I don't go over with my doll purchases though, so if something is beyong that, I try to think of a hybrid that will lower the price.

    5. For me it's hit or miss. I have paid over $1000 for a number of dolls, but money has been getting tighter over the last few years. The last big splurge for me came after I sold a couple other dolls in preparation for a certain pre-order I knew was coming. In that case I got two MSD size dolls for about $900. But again, that was only after selling off some other dolls.

      If I love a doll and I can raise the money then money isn't a stopper for me. What I hate are the inflated second hand doll markets, particularly for dolls like Volks. In which case it's just too difficult to get a hold of $2000 in one go.

    6. See that's where I feel sort of in between. There is a sculpt that I love but seems a little too much for someone starting out - what if I didnt like the hobby or can I justify it by saying well, if im getting one to try out at least I'm getting THE one. I guess im gonna have to sit for a few days before I am absolutely certain that what I want would be okay price point.

    7. I spent a ton of money on my first doll because she was special, although when I decided I wanted to get more I looked for something a little less expensive. I don't think I would really spend over $500 on the doll itself, but I know if I had the money and found an expensive one I really loved I would go for it~ The only thing I don't really like spending a lot on is the clothes and shoes, I need to learn to sew!

    8. my first doll was a second hand doll, so the price was reduced so i do not think i went all out price wise. at most i think i have spent 300$ on one doll and i have a SD i got for as cheap as 80$ (the story behind him is i got the body for free~ and only paid for the head which cost 80 bucks). though my most recent limited doll i had to layaway but i could not loose him :)
      i think it all depends what you want, if you like a cheaper doll then go for it but if you like a more expensive save or go on layaway!

    9. My first bought doll was $700, but that included the doll with face-up, several clothes, two wigs, eyes... Everything, sans shoes, that I would need for the doll.

      In general, though, I tend to budget to suit my needs. I have long-term plans, picking out eyes, wigs, clothes, etc. long before I'm even prepared to start saving up for the doll itself. Often, I'll buy accessories and such up to years before the doll comes home. So, while the overall price for my dolls tends to be rather high, I rarely spend it all at once.

    10. Price is a huge part of whatever I can get. I know I have to set a limit because I don't really have any job and my parents won't go and buy me a super expensive doll for no reason. So, unless I really feel like saving, I try not to look at dolls above $600, but somehow they still end up on my wishlist.

    11. When you have a limit on how much money you can spend, it gets a bit tricky. I think, for me, it comes down to either being patient or having instant gratification. Do I want THE doll, or a doll that is cheaper and quicker? I think there's nothing wrong with spending a lot on a doll, but I would have to do it in a smart way. Save up or something.

    12. @kiraabsol this is basically my exact same situation.

      Price is a huge deciding factor in what I can or can't buy. I love some doll sculpts but unless I want to put all of my money into saving for one doll it's unrealistic for me to want them. This is also why I try to get all of my dolls secondhand or on sale, so I can stick to my budget and not feel like I'm spending an unreasonable amount on them.

    13. usually i just follow my budgdt for the doll im going to buy. as acollege student i cant spend more than $500. so price is the more important to me.
      I dont mind taking second hand doll as long as the condition fit the price :)

    14. In my case, the choice of a doll is first conditioned by a thunderbolt and a lot of thought.
      Then comes the price, I determine a budget for the doll not to exceed.
      For example a doll of the mark Tonner, I'll stay below $200 for a barbie I do not exceed $50 for a sybarite I'm not beyond $600 for a BJD I do not exceed $800 . Once these limits fixed according to my favorite, I buy the doll or not

    15. When I started in the hobby, price was a huge factor. At first because I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy having the doll enough to justify the price. (My first doll was under $350 including the doll, face-up, outfit, shoes, eyes, and wig.) Later on, I knew I wanted many (over 10) dolls, so I knew I couldn't be spending $1000 per doll without destroying my savings. So, price was still a factor, but I was willing to spend $1000 on one of them. Most of the others were around $500 (doll only).

      Now, I'm at the point where I really don't need or want any more dolls. I've got 19 full dolls, and that fills the space I have set up for them. So, a doll would have to be really unique in order to get my attention. If I saw one special enough to capture my interest, the price wouldn't be a huge factor as long it was under $1200.
