Problems settling on a style for your doll? Or have a doll that's "too pretty"?

Dec 20, 2013

    1. So I got a Mystic Kids Leona and she's just gorgeous. As soon as I ordered her I bought a Dollheart dress for her, figuring it would physically fit her well enough and it certainly fits in with her character and story.

Well it fits well enough. It's a big baggy on her. I was ok with it at first but now it's like... uhg. Maybe it really is too big.

I hear Angell-Studio clothes fit the MK 1/3 ladies well and I do love their clothes... but none of them fit the character's style or the world. One cute little dress is barely passable. I feel like I'd have to just make her into a different character if I had to change her clothes.

Another problem is the dress is just TOO PRETTY. It's makes me feel like she's for looking at, not for touching, and I'm a very touchy feeling dolly person. But she's largely getting ignored :(

Have you run across these problems? Did you find a solution?

The only thing I can think of is to sew my own clothes for her. I have a sewing machine and an awesome pattern I bought off eBay, but I haven't found fabric I like yet.

I kind of regret getting her now. I obviously forgot how much of a pain in the butt it was to find clothes for my 68cm clothes. I just thought the MK girls were "close enough" to standard SD size.

    2. I always have problems with dollheart clothes. They are super well made and gorgeous but they hardly fit well.

MK are thinner but longer than the usual SD, so even if 58 for a girl is quite standard, they are skinnier and narrower. I have a MK Milo and he wears Iplehouse YID stuff, despite being 62cm. The bottoms fit just fine but he has narrow shoulders and is very skinny compared to IH, so tops are baggy. It's fine because it suits his characters and he is my only shorter SD (most are 70cm), he doesn't change clothes often. I found that Volks SD13 tops fit fine, but bottoms are a bit too loose.

Volks makes some really nice outfits too, maybe you should try those.

Souldoll double as smaller than most SDs, so maybe some of their stuff will fit her better.

    3. dollzone have just brought out a new more petite 58cm girl - she measures about 1cm bigger on the waist and hips, but their clothes are quite nice http://www.doll-zone.com/pro_detail.asp?id=1225 possibly for a 'day dress' for your girl? If you teamed it with some white leggings or bloomers, longer petticoat etc (all very easy to make) You could use fancy fabric/trim for a kind of gilet as they have on this outfit maybe?

Or adjust the dollheart outfit - How exactly is it too big? Could you make a tuck in the skirt or sleeves if it's length that's the problem? Could a sash around the waist, or just attached to the side seams of the bodice and tied in back, pull it in to make it fit her better?

Or how about adjusting her undergarments - if it's too baggy in the hips or bust, then give her some padding! :)

    4. No, I've never felt that my dolls were "too pretty" to play with. My idea of "playing" is holding, adjusting, the occasional photo, and admiring. I'm pretty gentle. As far as finding a style goes, that happens with my guy dolls. I'm not a fan of "hipster" so it's a bit difficult finding things that I do like out there.

    5. There are tons of companies that sell clothes of all styles out there. If one doesn't work, do some research and buy from a different company that does. :)

    6. I have a few things from Dollheart which I got in their fukubukuro but 90% of my stuff is hand sewn. The only issue I have with sizing is shoes but as long as I'm careful I can ensure that everything fits.
Sewing my own doll clothes also means that I am only limited by my skills, I can in theory create anything for my dolls so style is not an issue.

As for too gorgeous, I don't think I've ever heard anyone complain that their doll is too pretty, I just googled her and she is pretty damn gorgeous. I say enjoy her beauty and remember that beautiful people wear ordinary clothes too.

    7. You could try something made for a Dollfie Dream, as they are slimmer than most resin SD sized dolls. DollHeart has a DD line, too. Or you could alter the dress you have for her to fit better. Even a well placed safety pin can make a world of difference! I have ShinyDoll girls and they are pretty slim, so I pin their clothes at the waist quite often. I'm sure you'll find something to make it work, Leona is such a beautiful sculpt :D

    8. Try more contemporary clothing on her. For humans and dolls alike, formal dress is for looking at. You might like it better if she looked like she were doing something (or could if she wanted).

    9. If you enjoy creating clothes, I would try making some for her- I think this may also help you feel excited about the doll again? There's nothing more satisfying than seeing your doll wear something you made^^ My Shinydoll who as renee_chan said is petite SD only wears homemade or vintage lace, as the flowing fabrics suit her more lithe figure. Good luck :)

    10. I do find it a little uncomfortable looking at my dolls when I think they're not in the outfits that suit my perceptions of their 'style', but once I hit a certain look, I definetely know it's theirs. For example, Sumner was wearing all sorts of pretty dresses, but then I changed to something a little more edgey but still with that feminine look, and bam! found it.

    11. All of my dolls have set styles, and it would bother me to no end if, say, my hiphop/pop star was wearing lolita or something! :P

As for too pretty--yes, I've had that issue too. Not that I feel like I shouldn't touch, but because all of my dolls are characters in a human world, if they're 'too perfect' it feels fake to me. Obviously, they aren't real people, but I'd rather them be realistic than pretty. Some of my characters aren't even meant to be attractive.

I also own a MK girl, though I have a Miri. I've had all of her clothes (except for maybe 2 pieces) commissioned, or made by me, just because her style is so specific and the stuff I've bought for my other girls falls off of her.

    12. You could always use that dress for special occasions such as taking her places or showing her off at conventions and meetups. Then you just get different outfits for playtime.
You can always take it in as well. Even if sewing isn't your talent you can always use some safety pins in the back to give it a more tailored look.

    13. You have some great fabric stores in LA that are sure to have something for you. I was just looking at this myself.

I did have a doll that was too pretty and mature for the plan I had. I ended up replacing her with a doll that better suited my dream of having a derpy-faced, day-dreaming, fluffy dress wearing little girl.
