1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Purposefully incomplete - going from full doll to floating head?

Feb 18, 2013

    1. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has ever thought of or done this, but I don't think I've ever heard it talked about - usually hobbyists are wanting/saving/waiting for a body to complete their doll, not the other way around.

      • Have you ever had a complete doll and decided you preferred it as just a floating head? What reasons did you have?
      • If you've only thought about it -under what circumstances do you think you would choose to turn a full doll into a floating head?
      • If you've never thought about it - would you? And why?

In my case... I bought a doll that came with 2 heads, and the first thing I did was get a body for the spare, thinking they would be siblings or something of the sort. I've never been quite as invested in the spare head as I was in the other doll (who is a favorite). I'm aware that a big part of my current dissatisfaction is that I've let my list of doll projects get rather large and both of them are on my work table and I won't be able to finish them until the weather gets warmer. Part of me thinks it would be a bit of a relief to have one less doll to worry about painting - because I've always felt more "obligated" to paint him and less that I paint him for fun.

I originally bought him a body because I didn't like the idea of having floating heads or parts that weren't being used... but that has changed recently because I now own a head that will never have a body. (I bought a full doll to match an older head, but decided I was better off keeping the original head.) I would keep just his head, because he is part of a set, and I wouldn't feel right getting rid of him.

    2. Oh, I need to point my sister in the direction of this thread! :) She just sold a whole bunch of bodies, and now three or four or more heads share a body. She said it was so they'd take up less room.

    3. My DZ Mo-2 will be forever floating! He was my 2nd doll, and I ended up upgrading the character to SD. I couldn't bear to part with the head, even if I have no plans to do anything with him ever again. He's SO yellowed and has damage, he's not worth much of anything. So I'll keep him, but I never liked his old body, nor did I have room to keep it, so that left, and I kept his head in memory of his "childhood". lol

    4. I have one. My very first doll, a BBB Tony. His character has since grown up and upgraded to SD, but he was my first and I couldn't part with him. However, his body has been commandeered by one of the other floating heads I had. So, he's forever floating now, my little keepsake.

    5. I do, indeed, have one little guy who's never had a body and never will.

Manny is a Junga D-Skull, and he was always intended to be... well, exactly that. A disembodied skull. He's the necromantic pet/familiar/side-kick of one of my other dolls... Something sort-of along the lines of a more calavera-like "Bob" to Mystic's "Dresden", if you're familiar with those two characters. Having a body for him would just be weird.
