Question: How did you come up with your doll's name?

Sep 29, 2013

    1. My very first doll will be coming in in just a few weeks... But I still don't know what I'm going to call him!
So I'm curious... How did you guys come up with your doll's names? Have you ever changed their names? Do you give them first/last names or just first names? I'm so curious! :cake:

    2. When I bought my girl, I had her name "prepared".... but when she actually arrived it did not suit her at all :? it just did not go well with her, so I spent over a year untill I found her name that would suit her. Now her name is Severina Morgana Peverell (yes, I am fan of Harry Potter books ) and as it suits her well I am not gonna change it anymore.

    3. even though I took forever to save up and finally order my first BJD the thought of what her name would be wasn't one that entered my mind at all until she was shipping ^^;
so for about the first two weeks after she arrived she was nameless while I looked through name lists, books, Google, naming threads and tons of other stuff to find the perfect name for her
in the end, it was literally right in front of my face the whole time (her name is 'Nadeko', she's named after the Bakemonogatari character who happens to be on my skin for Firefox)
her last name took me months to decide on though

I took forever to name her because I didn't want to find a name that I like better later and have to change her name
yes, she has both a first and last name now (Nadeko Amano)

    4. I would draw from names I liked elsewhere in shows or movies, etc. My first boy Tobias, got the name from HBO's OZ, Talbot from True blood, Jedah from DarkStalkers, and so on and so on. Just name's I liked from different things. They still have to fit my dolls looks though.

Sometimes a name takes a while to really stick to a doll. Echo had like 4 names before I found the one that just stuck. My girls are still maybe temporary names. It just clicks when it's finally right. No last names for any of them though.

    5. Leah came from the character I got by looking at her sculpt--at that point, she was a mutant revolutionary with a dominatrix streak. Now she's an elf rogue, but her character is still the same. I looked for named meaning "mistress" and found Leah, which also might mean "weary." Both work. :P It's technically Léah, though, because it's pronounced like Leia in Star Wars.
Her real given name is Rin, but that came later. It simply worked as her original Japanese name.

    6. Baby books, baby name websites, characters you already have and want to have a doll of, sometimes a name will just come to you. If you gotta go through a bunch of temporary names until you find a good one, that's good. Find a method that works for you.

    7. Her character is a wolf so I looked up wolf in Japanese. It translated to Okami, so that became her name. My second doll I named after a book character i loved named Roan. :)

    8. I just give whatever name comes to my mind, or I keep the one from the company if I think if fits better :)

    9. My first doll is "Alba" because I'm an admirer of Byron and his works and that's the feminine version of the nickname Percy Shelly and his wife Mary gave him. Aine is the Irish version of Anne or Annie, which is my green Aine's name on the Miro doll site. Aira Neela means "Wind of Blue" basically which is what my blue Wind doll is. Kelly is a family name in real life for me, and it's his name on the Magical Angel site so I decided to keep that and use it for his last name. I still haven't decided on a first name for him though as yet. When I get him on a body and have his new face up done likely I will know. My RS vampire is Lucy West after the Lucy Westernra character in Dracula. My two MSD Miro dolls remain as yet unnamed because I am still debating on keeping them or not. I like the bodies but I never did really get into the Miro heads I bought for them so as yet they have no set personalities. I'm thinking I probably will buy them new heads at some point and then I'll give them actual names. I get my names from various places. Usually they just come to me but sometimes I look in baby name books until I see something that fits. I like the meanings behind names so I tend to look for one that matches what I have in mind...

    10. One of my favorite and experimental face-ups on my ResinSoul Long reminded me of a huskey...then I thought of the name Aldous Huxley, a writer, then I realised Huxley was just going to be his name...his last name was pretty random and unimportant though. My Magical Angel Amy was an impulse buy, so I asked a friend his name should be...she said Charlie, which ended up sticking. My Magical Angel Sherry seemed like an Ignatius, with her grey wig on and grey eyes in...I ended up with Ignacja, a female versio of the name in mind, since she is female...

    11. My current doll is a rat bjd, named Amos. It took me awhile after having him to figure out his name. I also have another anthro doll coming that I'm not absolute about her name yet. Usually I know what gender I want them to be. I do have a character doll in mind that will be my next doll. She'll be a grey MSD sized doll, I'm not sure what sculpt yet. She'll be Egyptian. Her name is Reinsemptra. I came up with that name just from knowing a good amount of Egyptian history and adding a little bit of Latin in there. I already know the name of my Gator I'm going to get from Impdoll one day too. It just depends on the sculpt whether it fits a character already in my head or a name pops into my head when I see a sculpt.

    12. I usually go with a 'put what fits' or a theme if a family or doll has it. The only doll I had to change the name of was Hyorin, just because none of the names I gave her before ever sit right with her... I eventually realized that it was because she was Korean after all, and as soon as I gave her her new name everything was perfect.

I usually give my dolls first and last names (and middle names even on occasion) unless they have no need for one (like the angels and demons and gods in our story, for example), and sometimes they even have aliases. For two of my characters in particular figuring out the "real" names they had as children was a literal nearly impossible challenge and they went around without proper names for the longest while. The reason for that was because of their aliases and the fact that their characters were keeping their real identities hidden in the story. One is typically referred to as "Bosschan" to this day, a wordplay of Boss-chan and bocchan which means young master, and was later given the name Evander (which means "good man") by a friend of his later to be his lover and wife. His real name ended up being Rayleigh Caelan Bennet. The other has changed several identities during the course of the story, at some point going around as Dmitri Yedemsky and later as Kirijou Isao upon his return to Japan, as well as by the alias "Damian" that apparently was simply an alternate version of spelling his actual name, that being his "original" Damon Wells.

Sometimes naming dolls, and the characters behind them, is just a piece of cake, while other times it becomes a really hard challenge. No matter what the right names will eventually click into place once found!

    13. I tend to name my dolls after anime and game characters that I like and think have nice names. Some times I ue my character uernames from any online games I have played. I write them in a list and try to narrow it down, then pick a fave that I feel will suit the doll that I have ordered. I like to have names for all my girls before they get here.

    14. For my Teenies I have given them each a name from a different region of the world that suits them in some manner:

Beyla/Appini: Sanura (Egyptian word for kitten)
Ai/Glot: Jelenia (Polish and Germain word for Deer)
SO Hait: χάρις "Charis" (Greek word for grace/favor)
Bronze Hati: Ylva (Scandinavian for she-wolf)

Having a set theme for them helps in picking names. I do not have a theme going for my larger dolls, so picking names for them is much harder.

    15. I don't think (unless I bought a doll based on an rp character) that until I get the doll dressed with eyes and wig and painted that I will be able to give them a name.

I'm still not sure what to name my Soom Benmore that I will have in my hands in a couple months. I keep calling him benny but that sure won't fit him once he gets here!

    16. It depends! Sometimes q name will just come to find and it fits so I use that~ Other times, I find a name whose meaning really suits a character~ Other times, I just pick one I like! X3

    17. Mostly, I pick names I like, or sometimes after a friend or celebrity I like. Though other times, the name just pops into my head! I try to stick with names that mostly fit their heritage or nationality, but some times, it doesn't turn out that way.

    18. I started off by writing down a list of names that I loved, and picking from that. Though when I got May, my first girl, I thought she looked so much like an Isabella. She was all set to be name Mai Isabella but I changed my mind on her first name and decided I liked May Isabella better.

For my second girl, Fae, she was always going to be a sort of dreamy girl into mythical beings and the such. She needed a fitting name, and Fae really stuck out to me. I am still debating on her second name ^^

And for my boy, Ryuunosuke (Roo) he got his name from a character in an Anime I was watching whilst waiting for him to arrive XD And when I opened him and saw his face, it was set in stone ^^ He is also waiting for a second name XD

So yeah, my original plan of having the names on a list failed XD

    19. I actually had a name all ready for my girl - Luna Lee. When she arrived though, it didn't really suit her. I noticed when I was holding her for the first time (when she was nude) her hands kept folding over each other covering herself as though she were shy :D So then I sort of just had the name "Shiloh" come to mind. She isn't shy anymore, though - she's pretty sassy, haha! ;)

    20. Even if I still don't have a bjd, I've already decided the name <: that's because It's all start from it.
She will be Annabelle Amelie. Annabelle it's just a "plus", the real name is Amelie. She was a siberian cat, the most beautiful and unique I had, and my bjd will be like her (: that's why I still haven't order her, I want to plan everything carefully!
