Religious BJDs - character and clothing

Jun 29, 2009

    1. I was just trying out a new possible future material for use as clothing for Mud when it popped up in my head.

I know there are some dolls whose characters are priests and such, but:

Has/should anyone have/had a doll that wears a hijab, khimār, burqa, agal, taqiyah, etc? Or any item of non-christian religious clothing for that matter?

It's just a question that's been bothering me all day. And I would like to hear some opinions on it.

    2. I've seen quite a few dolls wearing religious clothes of different sorts. I don't see why 'should anyone have a doll that wears ___' is mentioned in your post, as if you don't think it should be allowed. :o There are people of many religions here, why should they not be able to dress their doll accordingly if they see fit? Christian or not, it shouldn't matter how someone else dresses their dolls, it really doesn't effect you in any way. :-/

    3. My new Volks Michael girl is a Rabbi (not orthodox obviously). She'll have an appropriate outfit.

      Great topic!

    4. The reason why I said should is not because I'm against it (Hell, the guy that wrote the lyrics I have quoted in my sig is muslim), it's just that there might be some people that would find it contraversial and wouldn't like the idea. I'm wanting to hear their opinions too.

    5. Well, I personally don't care for it when characters of any medium are dressed to be a certain kind of religious figure, but act completely opposite...

I wouldn't like to see some slutty girl doll dressed as a nun for example, because that is rather blasphemous, and not just because I'm Christian... I wouldn't like to see it with any religious figure.

I think it is just fine as long as the character's personality reflects that...

    6. Believe it or not, one of my doll concepts was a muslim doll, and i was going to keep her head covered (should i find a doll that fits the idea for me)... but most of my dolls and their concepts are really not to fufill any story or 'character' that i have going on in my head, nor are they to make any statements... i just think a muslim doll would be pretty darn cool :D

    7. I think that the way your phrased your intial post could point things in the wrong direction because of your emphasis on non-Christian clothing. It comes across like Christian clothing is ok but others may not be. I really don't think that was your intent.

Some people may consider dolls in any sort of religious clothing controversial or even blasphemous.

My personal opinion is that someone's religion is their own business and as long as they don't tell me that my beliefs are wrong or try to convert me then they can believe anything they want and I will respect that right.

That applies to humans and dolls.

Short answer: If it's your doll. You can dress it any way you want.

    8. The only thing I would say about it, is I'm a Mormon (though not a very stereotypical one:sweat). We have a sacred garment we wear underneath our clothes. We believe you have to go through our temple in order to be able to wear them. If I saw a doll wearing them (even if it were a doll owned by a Mormon, especially if the doll were owned by a Mormon) I would be a little bit, no very offended. I think as long as the clothes your religious doll is wearing are not sacred to the point of what these garments are to me it would be ok. Even if they just weren't shown I think it would be ok. I would just excercise caution as no matter how respectfully you do something (this is something I have just learned:doh) it can be taken wrong and offend someone.

    9. I don't see a problem with it at all. They're just clothes. It's not like you believe your doll is some holy prophet or something (or at least I hope not).

One of my future girls will wear a nun's outfit. ^.^ It will tie into her character.

    10. I think this is because for some reason in our society, it seems more politically correct to make fun of Christians (or offend them, rather....Why, I do not know) so I could see why one would think a doll wearing a priest or nun garment was fine but from another religion, not so. Maybe it is also because Christian garments are more mainstream or something... And if someone makes fun of some religion other than Christianity, they're being bigots and ethnocentric, but if it's Christians it's different because it's something in their own culture.

It's like the exact opposite of how kids shows are allowed to have Jewish themes in some episodes, but not Christian ones (Rugrats, As Told By Ginger)...

It doesn't really make sense, nor is it fair, but that is how it has evolved.. :(

    11. Religion and bjd's...

I have seen very few bjd religious clothing, the ones I have seen are priests and nuns, oh yes and angels and demons but the angels and demons seem to have a non-christian story to them.

And what's up with all these crosses on gothic/punk clothing from korea or japan?!
Crosses are not my cup of tea, I always tend to pull them off the clothing sometimes. They add too many.

    12. I'm planning to get some angel wings for my doll (when she gets a body) so is she a Christian doll? I guess the answer is, 'yes'.

    13. I used to own a buddhist monk! He has gone to pastures new now!

    14. One of my characters is a priest and a rather nasty one at that who corrupts my nun Sooah. I don't have him yet- I used to have my El as him but he changed characters so I am still searching.

I personally don't see any issue with it and I don't really see why you would have to keep the doll 100% accurate either.

I myself am a practising Spiritualist and I don't take offense to the countless "psychic" dolls here or ones that converse with the dead.

I can't help but read your post as saying that you cannot have a doll wearing anything that isn't Christian- I guess it's just how you have worded it?

    15. I'd love to see some more variety like that! Sometimes it seems most dolls are very modern and "sexy", and since that's not the case with people sometimes I miss the variety. I've thought about getting a doll with a hijab myself cos I think it'd just be so beautiful, but I haven't managed to think of a character that would have one that could fit into my group so I've no immediate plans for it.

    16. FWIW, since this hobby started being strongly Japanese in origin and Japanese pop culture has always featured mikos as a stock character and assorted Christian imagery for exotic flavor (often with strange results), I'm not surprised in the least about those.

Anyway, it's your doll. You aren't going to get the BJD police knocking on your door for being too original with your doll concept, so whatever.

    17. I'd like to point out that the hijab and the burqa are not religious clothing, they are cultural. The Qur'an only tells women to cover their breasts, there is not a religious requirement to cover their hair or face, it's a cultural choice.

Therefore I don't think there should be an issue if a doll wears them.

    18. Even if they were religious clothing there shouldn't be an issue. ^^

    19. I'd be more cautious if they were, but I wouldn't be appalled if people dresssed their dolls in them.

    20. That's not strictly true...
The hijab and similar coverings are worn as a requirement at times of prayer and in places of worship, so they are religious in this sense.

I don't mind what dolls wear, just as I don't mind what we all wear, as long as it's not deliberately offensive.
