Sculpt name turning you off the doll?

Nov 11, 2012

    1. I think it's a bit silly, but I'm curious if anyone else does this.

I see a sculpt and love it, only to find the sculpt name and have it ruin the doll for me. Or I'll be looking through a companies dolls and the name will just distort the picture in my head. This isn't to say I don't see what a lovely sculpt it still is; I still love seeing their pictures, but I know I could never own one.

For example, Dollshe Bermann. He's lovely and what not, and I like seeing pictures, but I could never own him because of the name. Bermann. It just doesn't sound good to me.
I have trouble liking sculpts with names including "Woo" "soo" and such as well.

I know I can rename them, and I do, but it's still their sculpt name. Such as if I was to say this is my Erzulie: Mona.

I'm not trying to ask which sculpt you "hate" or anything like that, just how you react to sculpt names.

    2. I ignore doll company names and backstories. They simply have no relevance to the doll once it arrives at my house. Dollshe Bermann's name is derived from a Doberman dog, I believe, because of their loyal qualities or some such reasoning. I like dogs and so the name doesn't bother me a bit. I am more likely to be turned off by the silly backstories doll companies make up, but in the end, I buy my dolls for their appearance, not the name.

    3. As much as I enjoy reading doll's back stories written by the company, I don't really take it in consideration while creating my character, same applies for the sculpt name.

There are a lot of things I buy in daily basis that have weird names, specially food, you just have to don't pay attention to that ahaha

    4. I've got that problem with Honey delf Pitta. In swedish 'pitt' is translated into a less nice word for 'penis', and that's all I can think about when seeing that doll, even though she's a real cutie!

    5. the only time the name kills the sculpt for me is when they share a name with one of my ex's.. mostly because as someone mentioned the name sticks around. people will always be like "oh thats a beautiful doll.. what sculpt is it?"

    6. Sculpt names are like sculpt background stories for me. They don't affect my want of the doll either way. I don't see any reason why they should, either. Once the doll is mine, and in my home, it will become what I want it to be. It will have it's own name, character, and story. Though I DO try to remember the sculpt names of each of my dolls (I have a couple of AoD girls that I often have to look up their sculpt names, though) because that's important when talking to other people about them. Still, how I feel about the sculpt name doesn't affect how I feel about the sculpt itself.

    7. The only thing that ever annoys me about company names for doll sculpts is when they're really hard to remember or spell properly, or they're so short they're hard to search for here, or they're so generic that they could mean anything. Delf El, for example: love the sculpt, but the name is impossible to search for here, and it's also a bit weird because my name is El(le). Sometimes I find doll names ugly, such as Delf Edgar because it's just a sound I find unattractive and it reminds me of the villain in The Aristocats, but at least I can remember it!

It must be hard for doll companies to choose a name that is both memorable but basic enough to not project a personality onto the doll, and unique without being hard to remember. It's also difficult because most doll companies are Asian and may not be familiar with unattractive connotations behind certain names, Adolf for example.

    8. Off-topic: I just have to say; if you like Harry Potter, you would probably have a problem with the Norwegian (extremely silly) "translation" of the word "snitch". It's called "snoppen". Yes, I have Swedish cousins, yes, I know what that word means xD

On-topic: Feel-wise, I don't have problems with the sculpt names, as I am of the type who can completely forget what a doll's sculpt name was, is I try. However, a sculpt name may actually make me want to buy the doll. Like IH Erzulie and Souldoll Mariani. I find both those names to be very beautiful, so while I wanted the dolls in the first place, I want them even more because of their pretty sculpt names. Somehow, in my mind, the prettiness of the names rubs off on the dolls.

The only time I have a problem with a sculpt name, is when the name is so short you can't search for it here. It's extremely annoying having to scroll through hundreds of threads just because the doll's sculpt name is only two letters.

    9. No, I often like the oddball names companies come up with. I haven't had any name of a sculpt throw me off if I like the sculpt enough. I do find it annoying when lots of different sculpts have the same name though. I wonder if that's done on purpose or if it's just coincidence? It can make searching for pics troublesome.

    10. I do wonder sometimes how companies pick names for their sculpts, and there have been some names that have weird/funny/unfortunate connotations to me. However, it wouldn't affect whether I buy a doll.

That is actually something that would bother me, if the name is actually a (bad/vulgar) word in another language and I knew it.

Along the same lines, I remember many people got offended when Iplehouse called their nYID girls' body as 'fat' instead of something with a better connotation like 'voluptuous', or even 'plump'.

    11. I think the only one I have trouble with is my yet unnamed Leekeworld Mong. She's just a head so when I would tell people "my Mong head has just shipped" or "this is my Mong, ain't she purdy" I would get O_o
It hasn't turned me off the doll, obviously, but I thought it worth a mention.

    12. Oh good lord :O I would have a huge problem with that. I didn't even know about that sculpt but I think something like that actually would put me off the doll. I don't know about where you are, but over here "mong" is a really horrible word. A comedian recently used that word in quite a casual way and even he got in loads of trouble from it.

    13. Dollmore have a Mong also, so it must be something acceptable in Korea, I guess. I think in Vietnamese it means hope, but I'm not too sure.

I do think that mong here means the same thing as it does where you are. I REALLY need to come up with a name for her so I don't have to call her that any more!

    14. I don't really care about the sculpt name. My doll characters all have their own names, so the scuplt name is pretty much irrelevant to me. The only time it would be important is if someone liked it and wanted to know what sculpt it is, so I would tell them the brand and sculpt.

    15. The sculpt name doesn't really mean anything to me. I usually just pick out my own names based on what I have in mind for them. Sometimes, if I like the name, I will keep it, but I usually change them.

    16. ^^ Haha, well of course If I really love the doll the sculpt name is irrelevant to me, even if I don't like it. But that being said, there are some sculpt names that I don't like the sound of or that I don't think I can properly pronounce so it is awkward when I have to say their names out loud. There is also a bit of confusion that happens because one of the sculpts I want is a Honey Delf Choux, but I have a doll character named Shu. Pronounced in simple english, "Choux" and "Shu" sound really similar, so it is confusing for others to say the least. I do generally try to avoid doll sculpts with really confusing or hard to pronounce names, but in the end it doesn't stop me from liking the doll sculpt itself just because of its name.

    17. I get a little finicky if I can't pronounce the dolls name, which I think has made me overlook a few dolls. It's hard to sound respectable, talking about your doll when you butcher their name trying to say it!

    18. Haha that's kinda funny but, I do get you. It somewhat ruins it but like you said, you can always change the name.

    19. I had a friend in college whose last name was Mong... oh, my.

I haven't found any sculpt name to be particularly offputting. At a meet though, telling people "It's an ANother Secret Sunday Song head," is quite a mouthful.

    20. One little thing I remembered and found it worth mentioning:

I hate hate hate sculpts with really small names, like two or 3 letters only, like Soom's Byx, simply because most forums require you to do search with words that are at least 4-letters long. It makes me sad :( But wouldn't turn me off from buying a doll
