1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Sculpt vs Concept

Jun 5, 2021

    1. I was curious which do you find easier: creating a doll/character based off the sculpt or the concept?

Do you get the sculpt and create a concept around the sculpt? Do you find a sculpt to fit what you have in mind?

    3. I do both, I have fairly complex stories in my head for my dolls now. The stories were inspired by the dolls originally and most new dolls I get are trying to match characters needed for that world. But I regularly find a sculpt I love that won't fit any character I already have in mind so I make up a new character for that sculpt. Also some dolls arrive with a character in mind but just will not cooperate and turn into someone else after.

    4. For me, if I see a sculpt and a character jumps to my mind, then it is meant to be. If I can't figure out who they are, then I don't buy.

    5. I've done both but for the most part I ge tthe doll and then get to know them to fill in their background/character detils.

Doing it the other way around is a right old pain - Dolls arrive and refuse to conform to the plans you made for them, or you are lookng for a sculpt to be a particular character and go through several heads that don't work in order to find he right one. Too much faff and bother for my liking.

    6. I have a concept first, then look for a doll that fits. My characters are more important to me than the physical shell, so I need to be bonded before getting a doll. That being said, I think it’s definitely easier to pick a doll and build a character around it. Sometimes it’s just nearly impossible to find a sculpt that feels just right for a character. I just can’t seem to do it that way most of the time.

    7. I find if I just get a doll and try to make a character for them, I lose interest. It’s much more fun for me to have a doll that represents my already established characters.

    8. I’m definitely one of those who have a concept first. Developing new characters has always been something I find great joy in...and then finding the perfect shell becomes like a fun game for me. I’ll hunt and hunt (sometimes taking literally years!) to find the perfect doll for my character. I do the same for their wigs and eyes. Fortunately I’m able to do my own face-ups and sew for them, so that part’s easier for me. But all in all, I truly enjoy the search and development process, so it’s never a chore...just part of the fun of the hobby for me.:)
