Second doll dip?

Feb 27, 2013

    1. I've noticed that to most people their first doll is the one they bond the most with, and I know a lot of people who say they could never sell their first BJD. On the other hand I've noticed a general trend of more readiness to sell a second doll, less excitement in a box opening - that kind of thing. When this happens is it because the second doll is in the shadow of that first special doll-owner bond? Please share your thoughts :)

    2. Well, ignoring the whole bonding thing because I don't do that, my first doll was the first doll I sold and for the longest time my second doll was my definite favourite. I eventually sold him as well and my current fave is one of my middle of the collection acquisitions. I don't think it holds true for all doll owners.

But with the first doll, I imagine there comes a lot of excitement from the new hobby and also a lot of pressure for that doll to be perfect and The One that it probably engenders a lot of sentiment for that doll with the owner.

    3. I'm every bit as bonded to my second as my first. Amir and Loki are my BABIES! They've been my faves for the entire time, going on 5 years now. If I HAD to cut back to just 2, without a doubt, it would be those two. Both have been upgraded, but I kept Amir's old shell and Loki's head (never cared for the body). My third is where things got rocky. But order doesn't seem to make a difference. I've lost count of how many come and go, but After Amir and Loki, the "top 10" varies a lot between relatively new dolls and some I've had for 2-3 years.

    4. No way. I still love all of these guys, no matter when I received them. Doll #1 (SDCute Arashi) was intended as a 'warm-up', me testing the waters of blowing yea bucks on a toy, but I fell madly in love with him immediately and could never sell him; Doll #2 (SD13 Isao) was me finally really plunging into it and going for the Volks Tokyo Boys collection I craved, and I could never part with him either. He's one of my beloved elder statesmen. But I never bought any doll just to get a new-doll rush, or to keep up with peer pressure, or any other reason than that I loved that doll.

    5. I sold my first 4/5 dolls and then I found the size for me :)

    6. My first doll wasn't the doll that I just had to keep. My absolute favourite doll is my fourth doll. I would part with her last. I've sold several other dolls, but selling my fourth doll doesn't even come to my mind as an option.

    7. My second had the longest wait so far and arrived a mere two weeks before my technical third (the body for the floating head anyway), and thus got shunted to one side pretty fast - the first two are both Iple SIDs, I was able to prepare clothes for the second before she arrived, and the third/newest is a new size (Doll In Mind) and needs - and gets - all the attention at the moment. But I'm sure my time and attention will be divided more fairly between the three once this girl has got all her clothes together. :sweat
The more I think about it, the more I realize that my first was in fact my grail doll ... so comparing with her wouldn't be fair anyway. Box opening was very exciting the first time around, but as they made me open the box at customs when I picked up #2 that kind of spoiled the fun. :| I did post a box opening, but it definitely was shorter than the first, partly because I didn't order as many extras as the first time. The third box contained a disassembled body and no head because that was here already ... also I was dying to see her completed and didn't stop to take pictures, shame on me  Maybe with #4 there'll be a real box opening again.

    8. While I wouldn't sell my first one, my second isn't going anywhaer and my third is my absolute favourite (would have been second, but tok longer to arrive) so it doesn't hold true for me....

Can't say I've noticed it as a trend either, but I've not been looking for it.

    9. My first two dolls (they were bought as a set) were, sadly, not the right size for me. I was really happy to get them and I still have them, but they're very neglected and stay in their box most of the time. I've considered selling them before, but it's pretty hard for me to part with my possessions (and I've never sold a doll), so it hasn't happened yet. ^_^;; Plus they're not really popular sculpts, and I'd rather keep them then take a (probably rather large) loss.
It's hard to say which of my dolls is my favorite...I think they're all beautiful and unique in their own ways.

    10. I don't really think I could sell any of my dolls. I have noticed that I'm most into whichever doll is newest, but whenever I go back and get out one of my earlier ones I find I like them just as much.

    11. I fell out of love with my first doll, and he's been sold. I loved my second doll but couldn't deal with her size, so I'm now selling her. My third doll hit the mark and she's still with me.

The first two dolls were my learning curve, figuring out what I wanted in my doll family. It actually took a couple more dolls (bought and sold 4th and 5th) before I finally identified that elusive sweet spot, and since then the dolls I've brought home have been keepers. But it was my 3rd doll that I really fell in love with, and that love is showing no signs of waning. She also happens to be my "grail" and very difficult to replace, so she'll be the last one I'd let go.

So I think everyone is different! I initially thought that my first doll would be a keeper, and it was amazing how quickly I fell out of love with him!

    12. I think the difference between the first and second is only that the first time you do ANYTHING it is always a bit different than the second. But it doesn't necessarily mean the difference is a BAD thing. I was much more relaxed on my second opening because my first had a lot of terrible drama (I was sent the wrong doll--and it was the end of an edition, so they were not sure he could be replaced by the right doll!).

I still have my second doll... and my third, and my tenth and twentieth... and so on, and I still love them all and am excited when a new one arrives. But really, the excitement upon arrival is NOT the main thing about buying a doll, at least for me, so I'm really not worried about how they arrivals all stack up against each other!

    13. I bought my first doll after a ton of searching and deliberation to try to find the perfect one, so I've had him for 8 years. My second and third doll I bought because they were cheap and ok looking but I'm a hard to satisfy perfectionist and those two had to go. My 4th doll my friend really really liked so I gave him to her. My fifth doll was one I wanted for a long time to be the brother of my first doll, my sixth doll was the first doll I really really wanted but he was a sold out limited so I gave up until 5 years later when I saw him for sale on the marketplace. I've had both of those dolls for 4 years. My seventh doll I bought just because she was cheap and I modded her a lot (functionality and realism) and vastly improved her imo but she still hadn't ever been anything that caught my eye so she had to go too. My eighth and ninth dolls I bought because they were sort of what I wanted (but sort of not) and cheaper that what I actually wanted. Number 8 was a doll I really want (and still do) but her face was modded and she's on an older and annoying body. I want the same doll but new and unmodded. Nine has the body I want but so far just has a random head, I want to eventually get him a SWD school A head and then keep him forever (yes I prioritize bodies I like before heads lol). Ten and eleven were two cheap dolls my brother got my for my birthday which would have been super sweet and prompted me to keep them even though I didn't like ten at all if he hadn't made me pay him back for them the next month. I modded ten with new hands and extensive cyborg arm/shoulder mods in an attempt to like him, but the only thing I liked about him at that point was the mods so I traded him on DoA for doll 12 who is cute and I'm keeping. I also kept doll eleven since he's cute but he poses like a drunken rhino which is really annoying so I don't know in the long run I may replace him.

I don't think it's something like "the magic is gone" so much as it is my diminished budget is leaving me with dolls I am not satisfied with.

    14. Well my first doll was the 1st one sold..She was an Obitsu 60cm..It was an impulse buy, what I really wanted was a Resinsoul and my second(and 3rd) doll was my RS Mei and Mai bought them together for my birthday. The were truly my first BJD in my mind, I was overly excited about them when they arrived and since my Mei is my main character of my stories I could never see selling her, at least for a very, very...long long time. :) I don't think position of when I got a doll matters in the big picture of things. If I find that the doll just doesn't appeal to me any longer or I do nothing with it..I'd let them find a new adventure with someone else. :)

    15. I do not know why, but I think that with my first doll I would be leave more easier, than the second.
I was waiting for my first BJD more than half a year, and the time of receipt i was not so like this doll.
But the second doll came to me quickly and it was more "my" doll, than first.
In any case, I have no plans to sell anyone of them.

    16. I really think it just depends on each individual person.

For me personally, buying a doll is something that takes a long time to save up for and is a big expense in which I think through carefully, so my second doll I don't feel like "dipped." I was very excited for it when it first came. The only thing I did experience was a bit of shock at the difference in the doll's body, because its joints and what not were very different than what I was used to, because I only had my first doll to compare it to. With a little time I got used to it.

    17. The only doll I bought and then sold was the Doll Love Sleepy Alice head that didn't fit the body I had for her. I still think about her and would like to see what her new owner has done with her. Has she got a body yet? Is she faced up yet? *sobs* I'm stupid. >.>;;

    18. That's interesting. My first doll was a gift but I chose him. I sold him because he felt lifeless. I then purchased a preloved and I adore him. It feels like he is my first and I could never sell him.

    19. I'd probably never sell my first, but I bonded to my second straight out of the box, and moreso than with my first.

    20. Although I adore my first girls looks, she's not the right size for me, so I feel more bonded to my second. Plus, my second was a gift so has that sentimental value as well.
