It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. 1. I did have a gander for threads that are similar to this, but couldn't find any, if you know of one feel free to delete this and direct me to it ^^

      Which do people prefer -
second hand doll which have been modified/had their faceup etc done to make them completely original (OOAKs)
      or
brand new dolls that are unoriginal, but brand new, without yellowing or tampering etc.

or do people prefer to buy standard dolls and modify them to make them original

I'm just curious about this - I personally like to buy new and modify myself, but I'd like to know others' preferences as you seem to hear about different collectors liking different things in this respect.x

    2. For me its all about buying blank and doing my own faceups/mods! I wouldnt mind buying ooak but its very rare for me to find a doll that I love enough to pay for all the customization that has been done to it

    3. I prefer to buy blank and do most of the customizing myself.
For the most part, the marketplace seems to have a LOT of dolls that are either very close to new or that people buy with the intent of modifying themselves anyways...so I'm not sure how many people are out looking for OOAK dolls there.
Not to say they're not there. I have seen a few very unique dolls on the MP, though they really have to find a home that suits them.

    4. I prefer to do it all myself simply because for me, it's part of the bonding process and character development. I would have a very difficult time developing the character and bonding with a doll that someone has already created. I'd have a hard time seeing passed "someone else's" doll.

    5. I want to buy my dolls new, and with the faceup and everything. I don't trust my artistic skills enough to try anything on my own!

    6. I prefer to buy blank and new, and do all of the customizations myself. As an artist, my major enjoyment of my dolls is to paint and customize them to depict my own literary characters.

However I do sometimes buy a doll secondhand. In that case, I still prefer blank, or else with just a factory default face-up that I can remove prior to re-painting.

    7. Guess I'll be the oddball who prefer second hand pre-modded/faceups dolls. I actually prefer modded dolls - bu that's not to say i like ALL modded dolls. Simply that the dolls I want in my collection, I prefer modded.

I do buy second hand dolls and send them off for modding/faceups when I have to (the creative gene skipped me, and my artistic skills are..deeply lacking. So I can't do my own work). But it's so much easier if they already come at least modded the way I want.

For an example- I have two delf woosoos. One is unmodded- only thing custom on him is his faceup. The other was seriously modded- opened and resculpted eyes, sanded cheeks, repainted. I love them both, but my modded boy- he is the favorite. I have issues bonding to the unmodded one. he can sit in the cabinet for a while with no attention. But my modded boy gets to come out all the time.

The only thing I prefer to buy "new" is my pukifees, and bodies. But I will happily buy second hand bodies when I need to.

    8. I prefer to buy new and customize them myself. While my dolls don't have elaborate stories and characterizations, I do have a specific look in mind when I buy a new sculpt. That, and I do not like to shop on the secondary market for full dolls - I prefer dealing directly with the company.

    9. I have some of each...

Some of my dolls were bought new, and have either the standard face-up for their type or a custom one done by the company they came from. Others came to me blank and were sent out for custom painting once I had them. Some have come second-hand with face-ups that I liked enough to keep... A few I've even tried painting myself. (Enough to know that I have absolutely no talent for it. I'm still too paranoid about losing heads in the mail to ever send Teacup or the Alabaster Prince out for better ones, though, so those poor guys will never be particularly "pretty".)

As for mods other than paint, again I have a few of each... Some of my modified dolls I've done myself (My Type 2 Miyu, for instance, and "Dreaming" Yder-), some I bought in their modified state (My second Amakusa, my School A, my R Heliot and one of my Type 2 Dreaming Els-), and one I got new from the company and then sent out to a specific modder for custom ears (Nightengale, my Type 1 Dreaming El-).

All in all, the origin of the specific mod or paint job doesn't matter as much to me as having the doll look like I want them to, so as far as my collection goes it's all good. ^_^

    10. I am a 2nd hand doll person myself. I have to have there face up painted by someone anyway and any modding is the same. So if I find on on the MP that is already somthing I can work with I am fairly sure to get it. It cuts waiting time and most of the time its cheaper. I like giving preloved dolls home anyway.

    11. I don't think I would ever buy someone else's OOAK "finished" doll. For me it would be nearly impossible to feel like that doll was really mine.

I bought my first doll new with a face-up and have not really altered him aside from sueding. My second doll was found on the MP, though, and I did quite a bit of work on him. Put some of myself into him, if you will. Now he has a unique face-up and blushing, some wear marks and boo-boos, but I feel much more proud of boy #2 than boy #1 sometimes, even though #1 always has that special spot as... well, #1. ;)

Uniqueness must be more important to me than I thought. Or maybe it's not about the uniqueness, but getting the doll to come into line with whatever is in my head. Either way, I don't think I will be able to resist changing boy #1's default look for much longer.

    12. I could never get a comolete OOAK from someone else. Maybe just the faceup but I like to be able to choose eye color at the very least.

My preference is 100% brand new dolls but I own an equal emount of new and second hand. Fof new dolls, I like to either get the company faceup or if thats not appealing, send them off to a faceup artist. I suck at art, period.

    13. I love buying second-hand and pre-modded, but I have to add my own touches too: eyes and wigs chosen by me, their own outfits, and always, always my own faceup.

Personally I believe all dolls are unique! Even a very popular sculpt, with a default faceup and ordinary clothes, will be unique because all dolls, even blank, are very slightly different even if it's not always visible. And faceups are always unique even if done by the same artist, as brushstrokes can never be exactly replicated.

    14. All of the above!

I would buy a basic, limited, modified, popular, non popular, second hand(in good condition), new doll etc if I like it. I don't know what the OP means with "original" or "unoriginal"....I also think all dolls are special and they are made unique by the owner.

    15. I didn't vote on the poll because I do like customizing my dolls (and buying new ones from factory) but my purpose
is not to modify them. I have modified some of my doll/heads but rarely do I buy them with that purpose on mind.
Most of the dolls I have modified have been over time because I wanted them to fit their characters a bit better.
As an artist however, I do enjoy the customization process so I enjoy buying my dolls blank and brand new (just as
I enjoy my canvases to be clean & fresh when I start working on them!). Not for the purpose to modify but just to paint
      and customize them. (:

    16. I did all three. It depends on the doll and not on me wanting to have unique dolls at all costs.

    17. Where's Buying both new and Secondhand, and altering them yourself?

      That's what I do.

My dolls rarely feel like they're part of my life unless I'm the one who paints them and gets to decide how they look. I can't adopt someone else's vision.

    18. Right now I'm in the beginning stages of this hobby and don't have the courage or skills to mod a doll myself. I have several dolls and one on the way. Because of the expense of the dolls, I would hate trying something out only to fail. I would be devastated. I do want to send one of my dolls for a professional face-up, but cannot afford it right now. So at this point, I buy my dolls with the default face-ups.

    19. I didn't vote because I don't specifically fit any of those categories. Like Rosslyn, I buy blank or at least don't pay extra for a faceup since I wipe them all and do my own faceups. Even if I like a factory faceup or the one on a secondhand doll, it has to go or it doesn't feel like MY doll. It really doesn't matter if the doll is new or used, as long as it is in an acceptable condition and what I want.

i would NEVER bother with trying to keep a default pristine. I'm not that kind of owner. I want to play with my doll and take him out without worrying about things like that.

    20. Love what Harlequin-Elle said. All dolls are unique and original. Just because I don't have a desire to carve mine or go to great lengths to achieve -my- plan for -my- doll doesn't make them unoriginal. :| My dolls and their faceups, default and done by me, are pristine because I don't manhandle them. It's not out of a fear of their faceups or whatever disintegrating because they've been out and about many times; I just have a naturally gentle touch that continued to mature as I got older.

As for buying preference, new over used. If I can't get it new from the factory, I want it as new and well kept as possible.
