Second hand shops and your doll

May 15, 2007

    1. I was just wonder if anyone else dose the second hand store thing like I do. I have gotten all sorts of things from my local Goodwill, Salvation Army, and St. Vincent DePaul.

I got 3 bags of doll clothing for 15 dollars. Most I couldn't use but I found enough to justify the price. I also got VERY cheap (1.50) porcelin dolls at the St. Vincet DePaul...I totally scalped them and stole there eyes. Then there is furniture and other items I have also picked up from these places. If one has a vivid imagination and can look outside the box there is no end of what one can find at the second hand store for a fraction of the cost.

    2. Second hand stores are fabulous places to find doll items. My roommates and I will sometimes scour secondhand shops for pieces clothing with interesting fabric...then use it for doll clothes. Hee hee. >3

I'm currently on a hunt for (non-ugly) second hand doll furniture.

    3. Thats hard to find. I got a need looking bed that is just a wee bit to small for my MSD size girl. I might start making some things since the things I find are NEVER the right size...usually to small or to much money.

    4. Well, I need to go to a charity store tomorrow to find something to make belts out of (for a human size costume), and the thought DID cross my mind to see if there was:
a - any decent sized dolls I could steal items from
b - any interesting clothes I could harvest for fabrics.

    5. I always look, but haven't fount anything worthwhile at Goodwill yet, but will go fabric hunting when I use up more of what I have already.

I saw one of the wives from Dr. 90210 haul a bunch of her kid's stuff to Goodwill on one episode. I bet that store has great stuff

But not where I live, Everyone here is kinda poor already :(
I keep hoping someone will give then an American Girl bed for me to buy;)

    6. god i LOVE thrift stores and the like. they always have awsome stuff. i found the perfect trunk that looks like a treasure chest to keep my kids eyes in. i also buy those porcalin dolls for their clothes. only minor alterations in the sleves to make em fit. never thought of scalping them tho. do you mean taking there wigs off?....

    7. Yeah I keep hoping for that too but my dad has some extra lumber he might let me have to make a bed. I'm handy with a hammer and saw :)

YEP!!! I take off the wigs then make my own with the hair. I have quiet a few and just bought a lot of mixed wigs off ebay. Many are FAR to big for BJD but I know how to make grippy wig caps out of the tops of thigh high stockings that I got for like a dollar a pair at Big Lots.

    8. Guilty! I robbed from the porcelain to feed the resin!;)

    9. I don't necesary go there to find doll stuff, but sometimes I do!
I got this adorable little foot stol for 10 SEK (less than 1.50 dollars) some weeks ago.. Maybe it's time for another second hand round soon!

    10. I'm trying to resist going today in fact! Yard sales too, if that is not too far off topic. :)

    11. Almost all of my doll furniture and probably half of their accessories have come from second-hand stores and flea markets. It's amazing, the stuff you can use for dolls with a little imagination!!

Not much luck on clothing, though. Everything is too short and wide, mostly for bears. or Barbie. Which is NOT helpful for SD boys. :P

    12. Thrift stores are great! I have found dolly size straw hats, fabric, clothes to upcycle into doll clothes, and the occasional doll prop.

    13. I love finding things for Hazuki and Haiji in these kind of places.

    14. Oh yeah! One of my favorite things to do is hunt the goodwill outlet here, just gotta watch for broken glass in the bins. I've found all kinds of Pocket playset toys which make great props for tinys, and furniture. No clothes though, no one in porcelain seems to wear clothes I'd be okay with. XD

    15. All of my doll fabric (unless I need a lot of something really specific) comes from second hand clothes. It's perfect recycling, and there's a massive variety, and with dolls, you don't need much. You can find lots of crazy things at second hand shops. You can get old dolls and steal their eyes, clothes, hair, shoes, etc. You can often find furniture and props. I've found couches, rocking chairs, clothes, hats, and props from Goodwills and Arcs.

    16. I can't resist a treasure hunt at a Goodwill or Salvation Army! I've found furniture, some miniature books, but the best treasure for me so far was a locket from around the neck of a porcelain doll. I totally bought her and robbed her of it. :sweat

    17. My town has many antique, thrift and occasional stores (open one weekend a month, full of lots of different stuff), and I'm always on the lookout for things for my dolls. I found a cute chair quite awhile ago, a birdcage and a few other things. I haven't found anything I had space for in recent trips, though.

    18. I love going to second hand stores. You never know what you'll find there. We haven't been to one in a while, but now that I'm into BJD's, I shall probably go to one on the look-out for things for my dollies. :D

    19. I bought small metal canons at a garage sale once. I sold one but kept the other they were souvenirs from some out of country vacation.

    20. I adore going into second hand stores. I really do need to start going again, I'm starting to run low on fabric!
