Seeing sculpts in full profile?

May 20, 2021

    1. Does anyone else have a weird complex about needing to see sculpts in full profile before you'll even consider buying? Or is it just me?

I feel like I need to see the slope of the nose fully, the jaw fully, and see how the neck flange connects to the body, and if I like how those things look, I like the sculpt.

Please tell me I'm not the only one lol.

    2. I never really thought that I needed to see the profile of the doll for me to like it, until I saw the Supia Doll sculpts from their profile. I was considering a Supia Doll for a character, but when I saw how nonexistent their jawline is to their neck at a profile angle it changed my opinion on getting one. They look great at a straight on angle, but their jawline is slightly lacking.

I totally understand not wanting to get a sculpt until you see the side profile. I think that the Supia dolls really showed me how much I appreciate the jawline.

    3. I feel the same, largely because I purchased a girl a while back who looked amazing from the front, but when you turned her to the side it became obvious that her sculpt was extremely simple. No defined cheekbones, brow ridge, etc. Now I make sure to check what a sculpt looks like from all angles, and I assume if an angle as simple as a profile is missing from promo shots itโ€™s because thereโ€™s nothing to see there so I should probably avoid.

    4. I've learned the hard way to always try to find profile pics, preferably without a wig but still on a body. I have a Doll Love Brian head who I recently managed to get a body for and discovered the poor guy has next to no jaw compared to all of my others--it's just chin and bam, neck. Never thought to check for that before as every other doll I had before him was fine in that aspect. Guess he'll only get photographed from some very specific angles when he's complete.

    5. Dollzone's sculpts come to mind when it comes to needing to see the profile, the nose and lips from the front view look normal but sometimes from the profile they protrude out waaaay more than I would think.

    6. Im usually really impusive, so I buy without searching these details. I will try to change myself

    7. I try to always find at least a 3/4 view of the face if I canโ€™t find a profile pic. Plenty of dolls look great from the from but have a weird profile to me. Iโ€™m picky about noses especially.

    8. I do actually need to see the profile of anime type sculpts to know if I will be able to love them in person, which is frustrating as that's the type of face people most commonly photograph only from the front, seldom even 3/4 view. I've never had any resin bjd that I had the same kind of problem with over the level of definition of their features but I could definitely see this being an issue for someone. Sometimes it feels like no matter how well you prepared, nothing is the same as when you can see it in 3d in your own hands.

    9. You're definitely not alone with wanting to see how a sculpt looks from as many angles as possible. I'm having difficulty finding just the right doll to reshell one of my girls because almost all of my shortlisted candidates turned out to have flat profiles. It would get old fast if all she looks good for in photos are straight-on views. :( I could still trick the camera into fixing head size differences or bulbous craniums, but the lack of a chin or nose, not so much.

    10. Maybe it's because I always found modifying dolls (reductive mods) super easy, but I don't mind what doll's profiles look like (or not being able to see them in profile). As long as they don't have super deep set eyes, I don't mind the nose shape or how other features look in profile or any other angle. I tend to not like hooded eyes, so I void those anyway. I can easily change the shape of the nose, chin or cheek bones if I don't like how those look from any angle; modifying the eyes is a pain in the gut-hole for me, so I rather not have to mod those unless "necessary." Otherwise, I am fine not having a clear photo of a sculpt in profile.

However, I have always found that most companies I purchased heads from, were very accommodating, most were always willing to take photos if I were to request them. Particularly SoulDoll; I love their heads so own a few of them (I wish I could own more). They were always super kind about taking photos for me, whenever I wanted to purchase heads from them in the past. (:

    11. I do prefer to see profile shots. A super flat face, lack of chin or a ski slope nose is always a huge turn off to me, and I'd really prefer to know those things before spending money.

    12. Sameeeeee Some features are harder to read from a front view and I have had my fair share of "I want this doll! *sees owners pics from more angles* Actually no I don't" happen lol

It deeply frustrates me when companies only show the front or otherwise too many views from nearly the same angle...... what are you hidinnggggg :|

    13. Have to agree on this. Profiles are everything.

Ended up buying a Feeple60 event head and thought it looked pretty good from front on and 3/4, but when it arrived... oh boy.
The nose was way too sloped and pointed for my personal taste. Honestly, nothing a simple sanding mod couldnt fix, but decided to pass her on to a new home as I got zero inspiration from her.

Since then I've been even more picky with sculpts, searching for all the angles I possibly can before making any further decisions.

    14. I have actually had doubts of my first bjd ever ordered because I made assumptions on nose shapes based on images I could find; I wanted a more ptotic, or at least downturned nose, and it ended up being more of a slope. I wish front and profile views were more common on sites!

    15. Absolutely-- the wrong nose can turn me off a sculpt, and the right one can totally sell me.

    16. This is exactly what I like to see too. Head on a body, but no wig in profile. I bought a doll whose sculpt I thought I'd love, but mistakenly didn't ask to see her in profile, and her nose was very pointy, her chin looked slightly recessive and undefined, and her jaw was weak. She looked great straight on, but once I got her I found that was the only angle she photographed well in.... which is pretty limiting haha

    17. I way prefer to be able to see a profile view as well as front view for sculpts (even better if they are blank, since faceups make sculpts look sooo varied). Noses are especially important for me to see, and brow lines. I find so many sculpts have noses that look good from the front, but then are way too long and pointy for my tastes, or the brow is really heavy...

    18. I am always wary if company photos don't show the blank head, especially not at a head-on perspective. When all the photos provided are of a faced-up doll only photographed with artsy angles, I am highly unlikely to buy the sculpt. I can understand why some companies might forget the full profile shot, but front views and blank shots really should be standard imo.

    19. Definitely.
I wish there was some sort of, like, photo archive of different sculpts from different companies at different angles. It'd just be so helpful buying.

    20. That's... That's pretty brilliant, actually. We should start a thread requesting that when people get new dolls (with or without face-ups) they take a few good photos of the sculpt (without a wig) in head-on/front view, in full profile, on and off the body (if they have one), etc .and insert them into the thread, which can serve as a sort of database. The DoA search matrix is pretty great, so by searching the sculpt name, individual posts within the thread would definitely show up.
