Selling Dolls: Why?

Nov 26, 2012

    1. I have seen a couple threads about selling dolls for specific reasons, but I am very curious as to why in general people decide to sell their dolls... (If I totally missed a thread about this please move)

Is it because you wanted money to buy a new doll? Wanted money for things unrelated to dolls? Decided you did not like the sculpt anymore? Felt as though the character was complete so it was time to move on?

I hear a lot of stories about selling dolls to get a new doll, but I feel like there may be many other reasons too that I would love to learn about :D (because personally I cannot even imagine selling a doll right now hehe)

Anyways~ feel free to share your personal experience ^.^

Edit: Also, do you still own your first doll/ Was it harder to let go of than other dolls?

    2. For me it was kind of a combination of things: I wanted a new doll (my current one) and I didn't feel like I was giving much attention to my previous doll. I'd had her for almost 4 years, and the past 2 years I hadn't really done much with her, so I decided it was time for her to get a new owner who would appreciate her more. Plus I didn't really like the sculpt so much anymore, I wasn't a huge fan of the single-jointed body she had, and making/finding clothes for her was pretty difficult since minis weren't very popular at the time.

    3. I'm pretty certain there are a few threads that touch on this, :)

For me, it usually comes down to a few things. If I haven't been paying as much attention to a doll, and havn't become emotionally attached, I generally decide to sell, (I always feel better knowing that the doll will get someone else's attention and bring them joy). I've also 'upgraded' a couple of my characters when I've found a sculpt that I find better suits them.

I do still own my first doll; I've never considered selling him as he means a great deal to me :)

    4. I do still own all my original dolls, since I only have my first doll~~
But my friend sold her first doll before it even arrived to her house. It was because her mom only promised her one and she saw a sculpt that she liked much better.

I would never consider to sell my first doll because she was a limited full package and I would never think to even let her go ^ ^

    5. I sell because I need the space for the dolls I really want, and thats many of them! And I am at hospital so I cant have all I want to have. Thats why I sell, not for the money. So I care a little about who that bays to, will the doll get a good home? Yes, I think about that, even they "just" are dolls.

    6. I have been in situations where I needed money and selling a doll would have helped a lot. But financial reasons don't make me sell my dolls, there are others to get the money and I would really miss my doll. Not bonding is the only reason for me to sell a doll.

    7. I sold two dolls because of pressure at home. My family was hounding me for spending too much money, and being irresponsible. There was another doll I very much wanted, so I sold two dolls, and purchased the doll I wanted with the money.

    8. i have sold one doll because it was not the sculpt i wanted for the character and found a better sculpt. though i sold her to a good friend as he is getting into BJD's. only other reason i can see selling a doll is because i am reshelling the doll and need the funds for the next doll, which will happen sometime in 2013.

    9. Well right now I am selling 5 of my babies. There are a few reasons 1. I need the money to pay off another doll. 2. I need money with Christmas coming. 3. They dont get enough attention compared to my other dolls. It is always a sad affair to say goodbye I just hope they find new owners, ive sold a few previously and when I hear how happy the owner is it cheers me up alot!

    10. If I sold a doll it would either be because they weren't clicking with me or I was in a real need of money. Like if I lost my job, I might have to sell a bjd but if I got another job later I might try to either buy that doll back or find a similar replacement.

    11. I've sold a lot of dolls, for various reasons:

      -money for a new doll
      -no longer bonding
      -didn't fit the character
      -hated how it looked irl
-needed to thin out collection due to space
-upgraded from smaller doll to bigger
-downgraded from large doll to smaller

In all this time, I've never sold my first, and I don't think I could. He's been upgraded but I'm still too attached to him to sell his first shell.

    12. I regularly buy and sell dolls mainly for the reason that I like painting faceups and at the start of my hobby it was a good way to get my hands on different sculpts to experiment on.

The other reason is that I realized I don't really bond with a doll until I work on their faceups and dress them up. My plans are often changed when I fall for a sculpt I didn't think I would or end up not bonding with another that I bought to keep. In the end the ones who stay are the ones who immediately develop a personality or a name when I'm working on them and the ones who don't are rehomed.

I do have five dolls planned that I am searching for in different sculpts and I think that's where the problem lies. If there is a very specific character you are planning, finding the right sculpt is difficult. Right now I have two of them I think will work but they are still unpainted. Once they are painted we will see if they work out and if not they will be rehomed as well.

    13. It varies based on the doll. Here are some reasons:

      1) I liked the doll a lot initially, but after getting more dolls, I realized that I didn't like it as well as the others. (This applies to two dolls I've sold.)
      2) Immediate dislike upon seeing the doll in person. (This applies to two dolls I've sold.)
      3) Feeling like I had too many dolls, and that there was no reason to keep the ones I don't like as well. (This reason applies to most of the dolls I've sold.)
      4) Selling the doll so that I don't have to watch it yellow. (I haven't done this yet, but I've been tempted to sell a favorite just because I hate thinking of how yellow he'll be years from now.)
      5) Feeling like the doll doesn't fit in with the rest of my collection. (I've sold two for this reason.)
      6) Selling a floating head due to not caring enough to invest the money in a body for it. (I've sold about three for this reason.)
      7) Needing money. I'm lucky in that I've never had an emergency and needed to sell dolls, but there have been times I've thought that I'd rather buy something else rather than having a doll I'm not 100% satisfied with. This applies to all the dolls I've sold. If I was rich, I'd just give them away.

    14. For me, the only doll I sold was because it was meant to be sold. I know that sounds weird. For my first doll, I needed it to fit a particular character and there were two sculpts I really couldn't decide between and I needed to see them both in person. So I bought both at the same time with the intention of selling the one that didn't fit. The first one that actually arrived, I could immediately tell it was the wrong one. It just simply looked more right in the promo pictures, and even owner pictures! Luckily, the one that came in second was perfect and not just by comparison. It just was. xD

    15. It is so I can have the money to get a new doll. Tastes in doll change so now I love bjd and have too many of the other dolls.

    16. Very interesting! I always thought people sold dolls mainly to get other ones but it seems as though its way deeper than that! =0 Thanks everyone for your help <3

    17. Hmm... good question.

I previously sold dolls for various reasons like:

      1) Space issues.
      2) No particular purpose for the doll put up for sale.
      3) It was just time to move on (new hobbies).
      4) I don't feel attached to the doll(s) anymore.

I think those are my top 4 reasons for selling my dolls.

    18. I'm currently in the the process of selling a doll, this is the first doll I have ever sold and the main reason that I'm selling him what that when I thought of dolls I would be okay with getting rid of, he was the first to come to mind. I didn't bond with him as well as my other dolls, even though I do think he's gorgeous.

    19. Outside of financial reasons one big problem is being unable to bond with the doll or maybe just not wanting it anymore. I know of someone who goes from doll to doll to doll because that's simply the way she enjoys the hobby best and really I don't see a problem with that. Part of what we love about dolls is that they make us so happy in such different ways, and if a doll doesn't really interest you or make you happy then why shouldn't you sell it to someone who would love it? That might just be my weird view of it, but in such an expensive hobby, keeping every single doll may not be the best option. It's like keeping a pair of shoes that just don't match anything in your wardrobe, well, if you knew that plenty of people who wanted that exact same pair, wouldn't you sell it? I mean, the shoes aren't taking up space anymore and you can use that money to get a pair that you really wanted instead.
sorry, I haven't sold a doll before, but I can sympathize with why.

    20. I don't know I can understand when you receive a doll that since first moments you don't like when arrive, but I dont understand when people sell a doll that I had for years and (they never really used so much) , I mean why attend years before sell it if you don't like since first moment? ^^' But I could never sell for sure a doll that I had for years and I like it for years, so, I guess it's pretty soggettive the decision !

But I have a question for people who sells dolls : if sell a doll, means you never really like that doll, right? If you really like it, you would never sold? I'm right? :?
