Sleeping faces - do you have/use them?

May 11, 2013

    1. I was wondering about the sleeping faces that many companies offer as an option when you buy a doll... I personally think they are kind of useless, I don't see myself really exchanging the face plate of my doll for a sleeping one. I prefer them awake. :) Then again, I am new to this, so I might be missing something. And of course if you are writing a story there could be characters that would require a sleeping expression.

So, my question is do you order a sleeping face if you have the option? Do you use sleeping faces on your dolls?

    2. I totally would if I could! Sadly, Iple doesn't offer them ... nor do they sell heads separately, or I'd have bought a second Stella head just to mod it as a sleeping head for my girl. I agree that they're not absolutely necessary, but they're cool for pictures and photostories. :)

    3. I have a dreaming sculpt and I adore her. She's so sweet and innocent. I also have the awake sculpt, but there's just something about the dreaming one that caught me off-guard and took my heart with her. Plus, there are a lot of photo opportunities when you have a dreaming sculpt that can't be done with one that's open-eyed. I didn't think I'd like dolls with closed/mostly closed eyes, but since I got one, I totally get it.

    4. Three of my dolls are dreaming headsculpts and one has really slanty eyes. Every time when there's dreaming version of the sculpt, I prefer it over the open eyed version. I would've never bought the regular Elfdoll K for example. His dreaming version simply gave him the edge I was looking for.

So no: to me they aren't 'useless' at all. These dolls are able to convey a lot of emotions regular dolls can't and I keep falling for them.

    5. My beautiful Mariana is asleep~! She was bought as an optional extra head that came with one of my open-eyed girls, but I loved her so much she got her own body. ♥ I have three of that sculpt (BC Emily is best sculpt. X3) and I love my sleeping Emily just as much as the two that are awake. :)

    6. Yes!! Tyler, my DollZone Yue, is a closed eye sculpt, but despite that, he is a regular "awake" character for me. I fell in love with him from his sales pics, and was determined to make him an active menber of my BJD family. He's a musician and songwriter, so his dreamy-looking eyes come in handy for him. I'm considering having a head modded to give him an open-eye look, but he doesn't have to have one. I love him just as he is.

I also have alternate sleeping or dreamy heads for three of my other BJDs, and a fourth is in progress. I don't use them every day, but I like the versatility they give my characters.

    7. I never thought I'd use one, and that they were kind of a waste, but now that my Dollshe Saint has one, I think it's just adorable and switch him out at night!

      I love my sleepy Spike:

    8. I have a doll with only sleeping face option, but she's an infant so it works (she's also my current little spoiled princess)

and am also getting a fairyland sleeping fp soon, just gotta pay off the last $13 then wait for the split/GO to be shipped :3
I like the sleeping faces and want to get them for almost all my dolls, mostly Alice and Abadon because those are the only other ones that have them available.

    9. I have one girl with a sleeping faceplate (my MNF Miyu girl), and while when I first ordered it I went 'I doubt I'll ever use this, but I'll order it just in case I come up with a reason to have it' Well...turns out I LOVE the sleeping faceplate! Wish all my dolls had a sleeping version option I could pick up for them now. There are just some things that you do in a photo shoot that just look...odd if the doll has totally open eyes. Like couples kissing, or reading a book while looking down at it. Those just look more real with eyes that are partially or completely closed at most angles. Which sounds odd on the reading part, I know, but in general you can't see that the eyes are all the way closed, so it just looks like the doll is looking down at the book, where if the eyes are 'awake', it looks like the doll is startled by what they're reading, or like they're looking above the book at something 'off screen' instead of reading.

    10. I do not have any dreaming sculpts at the moment, but I totally want to get one! They just look so beautiful and peaceful!
Chances are I would order a sleeping face if I had the chance, I just have yet to buy a doll that offers a dreaming version :). It would be perfect for taking ceratain photos such as ones where they are supoosed to ble a sleep or day-dreaming. An open eye/awake version just would look...kind of creepy haha.

    11. I have a MNF Chloe that is a sleeping sculpt. I'd like to someday own an OE head for her, just so I could give her eyes, but for now I love her as an only sleeping head. Her character is blind, so it works. Still, there's something that lacks in having an only sleeping head, I think. It eliminates one of the customizable options, and I don't really like that.

    12. A few of my crew (Three Breakaways, one Elf Shiwoo, one Elf Yder and a Harang) are sleeping head-sculpts, and I use them exactly the same way I do my open-eyed and dreaming heads... They're regular, full-time members of the crew with bodies and characters of their own. People don't have their eyes open all the time, so I guess it doesn't seem odd to me to have a doll caught in sort-of a "perpetual blink".

That said, two of the Breakaways (William Adolphus and Julian) wear glasses, which actually seems to disguise the fact that they have closed eyes for most people, and the third one (Ptolemaeus) always has his eyes concealed behind a blindfold, so no one would even know he's a sleeping sculpt unless I mentioned it.

With Kaedae, Sannru and Kosetsu (The Elf Shiwoo, Elf Yder and Harang-) the closed eyes are more obvious, but that seems to suit them.

    13. I have sleeping faces for two dolls, my LTF Piki (included as part of the promotional event when I ordered him) and my Puki Pukisha (because she's a cat, so a sleeping face is appropriate). The LTF face is painted/modded to match the doll, and I do use it from time to time; the Pukisha one will start getting some use when I finally get around to painting it for her. If I had more sculpts with faceplate systems instead of just heads, I'd be interested in more sleeping faces--when they're full heads I want to give them their own bodies and characters, instead of switching them back and forth.

    14. I love sleeping dolls. I wish every doll came with a sleeping version, lol:lol:

    15. Dreaming, sleeping, reminisce and all the varieties of squint [if they count, like the 4-face plate sets for tiny Elfdolls = I have several of those sets]'

... I love the options for expression and life that they can project.:thumbup

    16. I have one romantic sweet dream head doll. I didn't think I'd like them, but she's just so peaceful and quiet. She is a very calming doll to look at and a great stress reliever. I can feel myself start to relax and breathe easier by being around her.

    17. Oddly enough, unlike most people, I have a preference for sleeping/dreaming (fully or partially closed eyes) over their counterparts. If you took a look at my dolly family, you'd probably notice that. It started out with my Soom Ai, of which I have both the open and the sleepy eyed versions. Then I liked the sleeping head so much, my next doll ended up being a sleeping one - my Volks SWD White Rabbit. And it just went on from there. I like them so much, I even write characters to suit their sleeping state, rather than try to match them to an existing character. I don't really bond well with male dolls...so the only male character I have...is a sleeping one. Hah. I feel like it adds to some romantic moments though!

    18. I don't have any sleeping faces. I think if I wanted to take pictures of my dolls sleeping I would just make a sleep mask for them. There are some beautiful sleeping faces that make me want to reconsider that sometimes. They just don't really fit with my characters right now.

    19. I have the one for my minifee, but I don't use it as much as I thought I would. Mostly this is because it's such a hassle to get his crappy wig to look good. If I had a better wig I could just slap on him, I'd switch all the time.

    20. I never had any interest in sleeping faces for dolls.

I'm not implying that I find them ugly or anything like that - not at all. Now and then, I see pictures of beautiful dolls with closed eyes... But I've never had any real desire to own them myself.

I find the eyes of BJD dolls in general to be what first grabs the attention (both good and bad) of most people. It is certainly an important characteristic to me.

So, no, I don't have any doll with a sleeping face, and wouldn't buy one.
