Smoke in your house with bjd?

Jan 2, 2005

    1. hello everyone. *waves*

i always hear about dolls in 'non-smoking environments'.. but i was wondering. what happens if they are in a 'smoking' environment?
will it hurt them? deteriorate them?
if she's in the same room, i usually cover her with something... is this good enough?
if anyone can give me any tidbits, that would be wicked...
      thank you! ^_^

    2. Smokes from cigarettes would leave residue turning your dolls yellowish in time. Other than that, consider smoking odor.

    3. Smoking can cause yellowing in many, many things, especially resin. It also smells bad to non-smokers so when people sell their items they lsit non-smoking home so the buyer won't have cause for complaint when the item arrives.

I used to collect My Little Pony and once I had a pony arrive that was supposed to be white but was very VERY yellow (the image had been photoshopped on ebay) and smelled so bad I had to soak it in anti-bacterial raspberrry soap for days and it STILL smelled like an ashtray...

    4. thank you both so much for your replies... i thought that it would stain her-- that's why i thought covering her would be good.
plus, of course smell... though i don't think i could ever EVER part with her *smiles* so i wont worry about selling on ebay... ^_^

      thank you again.

    5. :o OMG!!!! you poor thing

    6. Yeah, it kinda sucked... but I'm over it - I only paid like 5 dollars for it anyway ^_^;;

    7. Oh good info! My mom smokes so I'll know to keep the doll upstarts. I've been wondering that to because I used to carry my American girl dolls everywhere and now there turning yellow or darker.
Do you know how to wash the yellow off?

    8. If you ever get doll clothing that reeks of smoke, stick it in a freezer ziplock bag with a nice smelling dryer sheet or two for a couple of days. It will suck out all the smokey residue and you'll have a refreshed outfit again.

I did that to an SD dress I got on ebay once,...it was reeking of smoke so badly that I could smell it before opening the package!

    9. OH Thank you so much for that tip JoAnn !I will be sure to use that method if any of the clothes arrive smelling like smoke (hopefully none will..that smoke smell is nasty)
bad photography, wig sprays and now this ! is there anything you dont have a solution to?! XD

    10. LOL! Yeah, like winning the lotto so I can buy more dolls!

    11. My dad used to smoke. (He's been smoke free for almost two years.. huzzah!) The walls were white when we moved in but they were a sticky yellow in no time. My bedroom walls were whiter as he didn't spend a lot of time in there. When I stayed at my Mother's for awhile, Dad had my walls painted yellow to match the rest of the house! :barf

Thank god he doesn't smoke anymore. :) He's so much healthier, and we had the whole house repainted! My bedroom is a pretty blue now.

    12. i have banned my boyfriend from smoking nera me when I'm carrying my baby *ammon* i hiss at him. and he moves away and then I'm happy. sinc emy home is VERY some free. he hasto smoke outside.

but he's trying to quit. and goddess bless he's trying his best.. well sometimes.

his stoner friends. me and my sweetie have kindly aggreed if we geta place of our own that stuff *weed* is banned from going nera me. ba dstory of me being in a room with them them lighting up with nasty stuff and i getting a bad contact high that lead to a 1.5 hour long cry fest.

but in general smoking causes teeth to yellow. and is a bad smell and will yellow yoru darlings.

    13. Be careful with these - the dryer sheets have sort of an oily residue on them that can come off on clothing. :( I've gotten my fair share of $$$ dolls, clothes, etc., off ebay that ended up reeking of smoke, and out of ALL the things I've tried - and believe me I've tried everything - sitting the items by an open window or outside on a nice clear day is the best for letting them air out. As to smoky vinyl (like barbies) Omg it's impossible to get rid of once it's in the vinyl, they will reek for MONTHS. :(

    14. For clothing try Febreze...it works!!

    15. This may be an old wive's tale (ie, I've not tried it) but I've heard that burying an item in (CLEAN, duh) kittylitter for a while will also remove nasty smokey scents. This obviously wouldn't work so well with something delicate like a wig tho...

    16. Hello -
I have used the kitty litter method to rid a vinyl doll of smoke smell.
I wrapped the doll in white tissue (toilet paper would work too) And stuck the doll in a big ziplock bag of unscented Arm & Hammer kitty litter.

I left the doll in there for about a month, checking on it every so often.
After about a month the smell was mostly gone, the rest of the stink seemed to fade away after that.

On another note, I would never, ever use that nasty Febreeze. I am sensitive to odors to begin with and I feel that Febreeze just covers up the smoke smell with a VERY STRONG perfume scent. ugh.

    17. I love you guy's funny ways of getting rid of smoke smell! LOL

There are two methods to get rid of smoke smell and stains for sure: baking soda and denture tablets.
To get rid of the yellow from the resin of your dolls, soak the parts in the water desolved denture tablets. This is also a good non-bleach way to brighten doll colthes that have been exposed to cigarette smoke. Keep checking per the package instructions until the stains are gone.

To get your doll clothes odor free from smoke, ciggies, mold, cat pee, etc, put them in that fabled ziplock bag with some baking soda until the smell is gone. Normally less than 24 hours is enough. This method also works to get odors out of anything, such as carpets (sprinkle it on and vaccuum 24 hours later).

And finally for those that have used the dryer sheet method and got those oily stains put the outfit on a flat surface and put a paper towel between the layers up against the back of the stain. Sprinkle some talcum powder on the oil stain completly covering it and put another paper towel over that. Then take a couple of phone books and your bowling ball bag and place it on top and leave it there for a week. The stain should be gone. This also works to get salad dressing stains off of ties and blouses...

    18. Aha!
I bet that is why the Arm and Hammer brand of Kitty Litter worked for me!
(smacks forehead) It has Baking Soda in it!

    19. *is torn between two reactions:

      1. EW EW EW EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW :barf

      2. ... really.. *shudder* *_*

    20. That is pretty gross... :barf:

The freezer thing is an interesting thought. I've bought a number of things through eBay and can only really recall some wigs coming in *reeking* of smoke. All I do is air them out (same as I do for any clothes I've worn out to bars - our restaurants are smoke free :)). I usually leave them by an open window for a day or two and the smell is gone. :) I don't think sticking a wig in the feezer would be such a hot idea...

Never had to deal with vinyl that smelled of smoke tho. That sucks terribly.
