Sparkle or none?

Apr 3, 2015

    1. Hi guys, just being curious about the individual's preference!! (please remove this thread if there is already a similar one, thought I checked and did not find any :D)

Do you like your doll face-ups with glitter (Shimmer, pearl powder, etc.) or none??
Do you think it makes your doll look more alive?

    2. I do not have any dolls yet, but I would love adding a bit of sparkle to my dolls! Especially if they are fantasy types.

    3. I used a gold/metallic pigment on my doll's latest faceup. It is certainly interesting, but I think I prefer more natural looking faces.

If I am going to use the metallic pigment again, it would probably only be for fantasy based dolls with a reason of having it.

    4. No, I don't think it makes them look "more alive," I think it makes them look like a person wearing glitter powder--a person who is wearing a good amount of makeup, in other words. I prefer a more natural look in my dolls, and therefore only like shimmer materials in small quantities on fantasy-type dolls (fairies, specifically).

    5. I like using the pearl dust for eyeshadow - it makes it look more like human eyeshadow! Sometimes on the lips, depending on the style of makeup. But I don't normally prefer it all over, particularly not on boys, unless they're a fantasy-type.

    6. Yeah I do like shimmer. Especially in eye-shadow or on the cheeks.
      (:

    7. Things are dull enough. There is no reason I can see not to add glitter, shimmer or sparkle to anything...
I am a glitter addict from way back. You can do it garish, or subtle, but it does add life, and beauty.

    8. I don't really care for glitter on my dolls, and I don't think it makes them look more lively. I do like seeing it done in a very subtle manner on fantasy dolls, though.

    9. Pearl powder IN MODERATION is fine, I think...
But when a face-up is covered in so much of it that it affects the surface texture of the sealant (I received a tanned F60 El from Fairyland with that problem. He was covered in so much of the stuff that a neighbor said he looked "sweaty". <_<) or the doll looks like a disco ball exploded on its face, that's taking things too far.

It's very, very easy to over-do the whole "face bling"-thing on a doll, and some people just don't know when to stop.

    10. I'm a huge glitter queen though I seldom use the bigger chunkier kind. Mostly I'd confine it to fantasy dolls, but yeah, I'd use it. Why not? I like metallics, glitter and I don't hesitate to use them if I want.

    11. I wouldn't mind it on the clothes, but for the face I'd prefer only in very small amounts and only if it fit the character and the doll.

    12. I do think a light shimmer is very pretty.

    13. I like a little on my girls for their eyeshadow or their lip gloss, but for the most part, no. No glitter and shimmer for me.

    14. I've been watching a lot of face up videos by various artists and overall shimmer to me only looks good on lips and the inner corner of the eyelids. It kinda makes the dolls look less realistic if applied all over the place, which is good or bad depending on what you are going for.

    15. Do you like your doll face-ups with glitter (Shimmer, pearl powder, etc.) or none??
Totally depends on the doll and the character, doesn't it? I don't object to it flat out... But if you've got a super-realistic, gritty character, glitter will not work! If you've got a sweet, pretty girl, or a pretty-boy, it might be perfect. Depends on what you're looking for!

Do you think it makes your doll look more alive?
      Not necessarily. (See above!)

--sometimes too much gloss in odd places can catch the light in photos and look strange. Sometimes the look is right... again, depending on the character. I know that I have a couple of dolls that are realistic with gloss lining their eyes and a bit of shine there, on my guy dolls, look a bit weird in photos.

    16. I love the shimmer because it makes them look more like dolls! I've only had shimmer from FairyLand and Bambicrony. The dolls look very finished and sweet with the shimmer.

    17. My first BJD is on her way and my goal is to do this for her eye makeup.

So I ordered in some black and silver pearl powders. For one of my MH dolls I'm doing this:

But with a bit of blue shimmer. And I'll probably add a tiny bit of glitter.

I think that shimmer/glitter mixed with normal matte pigments can really make a doll

    18. Unless I want the doll to look more: innocent, fantasy-like, wearing sparkly/shimmer make-up (like lip gloss or eye shadow), or if it is within their character personality, then I do not like a lot of shimmer. None of my dolls have shimmer in their face-ups since I just have not found a purpose for it yet. However, I have seen face-ups where the use of shimmer is nicely done considering the type of look and/or placement on the face (like for highlights)
Do I think shimmer makes them look more alive/realistic? Yes and no. If shimmer is used for the purpose to show make-up or certain highlights on the face, then yes it can/does look more real. This is only using a little bit though. If it is used too much then it becomes less real-looking.

    19. Depends on the character most of my characters are fantasy types who like to wear fairy kei, creepy cute, decora etc so I do shimmer, glitter and vibrant colours in face ups a lot. I think even in my one "human" character whom I give natural face ups too I would probably add shimmer in the glossing of the eyes and lips to tie her in with the others (since they are all part of the same story). I actually don't really like natural face ups too much because I see them everywhere so if it's for one of my dolls I feel like I have to add something to it. Does it make them more realistic yes and no as others have said if you go over kill with the shimmer then it can ruin the look. But for me Realism is not the most important thing for my dolls, I much prefer to have a character which is recognizable than uber realistic, this might just because I own more fantasy characters.

    20. I've never had glitter or shimmer on a faceup before. Never occurred to me. I don't think I'd like it.
