Startled by doll sizes?

Jan 17, 2015

    1. This is a random question based on my experiences with BJDs that I just wanted to ask the community. Are you, or have you been, consistently surprised by how big or heavy ball jointed dolls are, respective to their size (SD, MSD, Yo-SD, etc)?

I remember getting my first BJD (a Luts Senior Delf) and realizing that somehow, even though I used a measuring tape and everything to think about how big 60+ cm is, I was not prepared for a big bundle of joints that stood over a third of my height. After that experience, I scaled down to MSDs and currently am working on completing a 40cm doll. But upon receiving the body, I realized it was actually still a lot bulkier than I thought it would be... and every time I take the doll out I'm startled by how long it is. I always imagine that it'll be smaller and lighter. Now I'm wondering whether I'll have to scale down to 30cm size to not feel overwhelmed by ball jointed dolls!

    2. I don't own a bjd yet but im looking for one and whenever I read the measurements in cm I don't realize how big the doll is. I used a converter for a 70cm doll it's almost 30 inches. That's huge. Almost a yard!

    3. No... I think I haven't been much startled to this day... And I've got 71/65cm giants among my little crew xP Usually most dolls seem to be a little smaller than I imagine them to be -even though I'm a tiny person myself, "towering" at 151cm...- However I was surprised at how big Calvaethor, my kid delf centaur is! It's most likely because of his insanely huge wings and billowy tail rather than his actual horse butt and actual bulk though xP

    4. I was very surprised by the size and weight of my Trinity Elysia, Niamh...I was also startled by the size of my Feeple65 but now I'm used to them. I just wish I had more space to put them lol :)

    5. I really wasn't surprised by a doll's size or weight until I bought a Soom Idealian72. I didn't realize how large and muscular he was until I compared him to my Super Gem body. The new SG male looked so delicate next to him and I didn't really expect that. His weight is also something I'm not quite used to for a doll without fantasy parts, and I am still surprised by how heavy he is when I pick him up since most of my collection is 65 cm (even my DS Saints have slender, dainty bodies for 71 cm).

    6. This may sound weird, but I was started at the smallness/lightness of a couple of my dolls, rather than how large or heavy they were.

Prior to getting my 72cm IMPL Idol, the largest doll I'd owned was an Elfdoll K and the majority of my collection was 1/4 size dolls. I expected my Idol to be enormous, and he is, so no real surprise there. After adding a couple more dolls in the 70cm range to my collection, I acquired a 70cm Resinsoul boy and...wow! I was really startled at how light he is compared to all my other dolls of similar size. He's almost alarmingly light, and I still don't like handling him as much as my other big resin folks.

My second size surprise was my Souldoll Vito Lester, purchased off the secondary market. I knew he'd be around 54cm, but having no dolls of medium size (they're all 1/4 size or 70cm+) I really had no concept of how small he'd be. I really did expect him to be bigger than he is, I think. I'm by no means disappointed in his size, though. In fact, his little body was one of the most pleasant surprises I've had in my 5+ years in the hobby. I think the 50-60cm range is probably the most ideal size. :)

    7. My doll chateau Douglas was my first bjd, and everywhere online people where saying how skinny and breakable they seemed. But when he came in I was pleasantly surprise by how sturdy he was. Maybe it's because I have nothing to physically compare him to :XD: I was also quite shocked by how tall he was, honestly I wasn't expecting that even though I knew how tall he was going to be.

    8. One of my first BJD's was an SD and boy was I shocked at how BIG it was! I sold it quickly after receiving it because I couldn't handle the size :p. With SD I feel like there is too much going on for me to be able to pose it. I only buy MSD and smaller now, which is definitely more my cup of tea :).

    9. While I was waiting for my first doll to arrive, I kept hearing people talk about how HUGE SDs are, so I was pretty surprised when I got my first bjd, a 60cm girl, and found her size.... really anticlimactic. SD dolls really, really don't seem that big to me. At all. I think part of that is because I used to do a lot of sewing for American Girl dolls before I started collecting bjds, and AG dolls only stand a few inches shorter than an SD and are infinitely bulkier and have heads that are 4 times the size. I love SD size-- it's perfect for me. But I definitely didn't find it huge and intimidating and whatnot, and I was sort of expecting to because that's most of what I hear about that size range.
I don't care for MSD size for myself; I find them too small and really fiddly to pose as compared to SD. The first time I handled one I was a little surprised at how tiny and spindly she was.

    10. Before I got my first BJD I really liked the look of the Volks SD "four sisters" sculpt, until I took a measuring tape and realized how big SD sized dolls actually are. I don't know about the weight, having never seen a SD or larger irl, but I can't fathom having a doll that large. XD; I have a Luts Kid Delf, and I don't find him particularly heavy relative to his size. To me he seems to suit his weight?

    11. I'm always surprised by 70cm~ dolls. Especially seeing owner's pictures with the doll's hand in their own hand; it drives home how big they are. Personally, it's too big for me, 45cm~ size is where I like dolls. But the detail on bigger dolls is incredible and lovely.

    12. I was used to vinyl or cloth, so it was a bit of a surprise when I took my first (an MSD) out of her shipping box and realized how substantial she was. Those Dollstown girls are heavy. Then the next one I got was a PukiPuki. That was startling the other way, opening the Fairyland box and seeing how small she was.

Edit to add - I was accustomed to the MSD size - one of my favorite OT cloth dolls is about 17" tall and the other is just shy of 24". But cloth doesn't have the weight - or sheer presence - of resin.

    13. My first doll was an SD girl and despite being willowy I was definitely surprised by her size. I didn't end up keeping her and have since collected only Fairyland tinies. I fairly recently bought an SD head and was very startled by its size, and now I'm a little nervous if I'm still going to be happy once I get him a body, or if SDs are just too big for me.

    14. The first BJD I ever handled was my first, Chulyen. I knew that he was 68cm, so I had a rough idea. The size of the box he arrived in really startled me. It was huge! But when I got him out, he was about what I expected sizewise. I didn't have a clue about how much he would weigh, so I wasn't surprised there. I found his weight to have a pleasant heft and feel.

The only doll that really surprised me was Charlotte, my FL65 Angela. She was a bit bigger than I expected, but I love it! She's my Amazon.

    15. I vaguely knew BJDs had some weight, but I did not expect my girl to weigh more than a few ounces. :sweat

    16. I dont understand the guys who are not into big bjds.
I own an MSD (46cm) and would die for a 80+ one!!
      Imo the bigger the better.

    17. I've been startled in a couple of ways by dolls. When I first got into the hobby, I was surprised by the size and weight of my roommate's first SD, and was glad I was going for a smaller doll. Then, conversely, the first time I encountered a PukiPuki, my immediate thought was "That's so tiny!" (Followed by "I need one!") When I got my first SD, a Soom limited, I was shocked how big and heavy she was, and eventually she overwhelmed me and moved on to a new home, and I swore off SDs for good.

Then, this past year, I really shocked myself when I went to a doll panel at a convention, looked at the dolls the presenters had up front, and thought, "That's an SD? I haven't seen one in person for so long, I thought they were bigger..." Which has lead to two SDs coming to join my collection, and this time around, staying, which is definitely a surprise for me.

    18. Yes-- the first time I ever saw/held a doll in real life-- which also happened to be my first doll's arrival! I jumped into BJDs sight-unseen. My friend had warned me, "These dolls have more presence than their mathematical measurements would allow you to believe", but I didn't get it until I had the doll in front of me. My first doll was 45cm tall (Volks SDCute), which is about 16 inches, and I know how big 16 inches is, but I was still startled by his size when I held him. My next doll was 60cm, which is about 2 feet tall, and I know how big 2 feet tall is, but waaaa! The SD13 blew me away. :whee:

After the initial adjustment, I ceased to be startled by doll sizes for the most part. However, new size-epiphanies definitely happened when I bought an 80cm Mecha Angel... and the first time I bought a 70cm EID, who isn't just enormously tall, but also enormously thick/wide/deep/heavy/generally huge all around. As the years went by in the hobby, I encountered every size of doll in other people's collections & at meetups; you get used to the general scale of things after awhile.

But OK, I admit, sometimes whenever I pick up one of my EIDs I still marvel at how huge he is, even though I've owned him for years and should be used to it by now. (Well, when you pick up an EID you gotta be careful to lift with your legs & not with your back, otherwise you'll cripple yourself! Those guys are a freakin' armful!)

    19. I was really weirded out when I went to my first doll meet and saw how tiny MSDs really are compared to my SD boys ;) I had never held a doll other than my own before and my dolls are all fairly heavy so it was a surprise to see how light and dainty MSDs are!

    20. I was even surprised with my msd. Also did the measuring but for some reason I pictured her smaller! I live the surprise!
