1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Stupid newbie-ish question about standard clothing sizes....

Jun 7, 2013

    1. I don't have permission to post in newbieland lol, so I'm forced to ask here... It seems I should have come upon this information earlier in my time with bjds, but since I sew most of my own doll clothes, I never really paid attention much before to the standard sizing terms...

I did searches, but I don't know if I'm spacing and searching the wrong things or what? So please don't bite my head, off, but...:

Is there a thread somewhere that tells you what the dimensions are of sizes, like SD17, SD13, SSDF and such? Of course I've seen these terms throughout my time in the hobby, but I never found out what exactly they mean. I had even looked at Volks' website and the information seems pretty elusive there as well.

Is there a chart somewhere that tells the height, chest size, waist size and such? Or are they a bit more general than that, only pertaining to height or something?

Thanks for any help, and sorry for the ignorance!

    2. not a stupid question... there are a few threads like that and a couple of 'data base' type things (actual spreadsheets) and I have yet to find a truly comprehensive one. Usually the main threads for specific dolls can net you the info you want. And yes Volks is stupendously useless for providing that information on it's own dolls. So far I have had to ask owners for measurements on specific dolls (ie the SD10). I had had a fairly good spreadsheet type list but lost my link to it ><. For specific dolls or doll types I usually Google 'what are the measurements for (blah)' and nearly always find a link to a DoA thread (yay Google LOL)

OH and as far as I can tell, despite what anyone says, there is no such thing as standard (just like with ppl ^^) like your 'what fit's threads... it's almost always trial and error ^^. Which reminds me.... you need to put links to all your threads lke that into you profile page or your signature would be stellar handy. and the few sizes you listed are references to Volks doll sizes and as far as I could tell seem to identify by number an age type?... SSDF I believe is Luts largest size boy, the one that has shoes for my zenith boys massive feet. ^^ SuperSeniorDelfF? O_o so hope I said something 'useful' at least ^^.

    3. Thank you so much Lady Tiku! And thanks specifically for letting me know what SSDF was, because I couldn't find that on Volks and it was particularly confusing lol.

Ug, more research to do.... I keep forgetting that google comes up with better search results than searching on DOA lol. I don't know why it just keeps not occurring to me.

The one thing about the "fits" threads, were you referring to the ones that I made with the shoes and jointed hands? I should link them in my profile or sig? That can be done. Hopefully I should have more to add to one of them soon and I plan on writing a new tutorial about blushing pieces to match soon as well.

I'll see if I can come up with a new chart for standard SD measurements sooner or later myself since there doesn't seem to be a good one out there right now.

      Thanks a bunch! :D

    4. Other members have worked on charts. There's a lot of measurements to be found here: http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?137992-Large-Doll-Measurement-Chart Some of the info is pretty old, but there's still enough to be useful in a lot of cases.

SD13 and SD17 refer to specific Volks bodies, but in general SD13 clothes are intended for dolls around 60 cm high and SD17 for those around 65cm. SSDF is indeed an abbreviation for Super Senior Delf - the measurements for their boys are on the Luts website, but when used as a general clothing size refers to 70cm range dolls. Some companies list 70cm size as "Hound" after the Dollshe boys in that size range, and some make it simpler by just saying 70cm. :sweat But as mentioned, there are no "standard" measurements for any height of doll, so things that fit one 60 cm boy doll for example may not fit a boy of similar height from a different company! That's where the threads for specific dolls come in handy - you can chat with other owners about what has worked for them. :)

    5. solitary agent has a good point about stuff for dolls of the same 'size' (meaning height) not fitting everyone. I have Souldolls zenith boy. His feet are ridiculously huge... as in SSDF huge, Most shoes for 70 cm dolls do not fit my guy... Even Souldoll sold some outfits meant to be wore with Luts companies shoe/boots. Compare my guy to a 70-71 cm Iplehouse.... not even in the same ball park... -_- And technically my guy... is only 69 cm... and he only wears 70+ stuff from Doll Heart and even it can be a bit snug.

For a visual comparison and I think (have forgotten) a lot of measurements try this. It was made by a member of DoA and is kinda nifty. It takes you to an off site page but is still an awesome reference and I'd say once you get the hang of it fairly accurate depictions. ^^

    6. A huuuge thanks to both of you!
*sigh* I had a feeling that there was problems with varying sizes of the same range. Sounds like no matter how much research one does there's still some guess work, which is part of why I put up my thread about the shoes.

ug even some shoes that listed inner dimensions that matched EIDs and ID's, when I received them they didn't fit either!

But now I have a better idea what people mean with a lot of the terms and I have confirmation that those terms don't exactly mean something in a category is going to fit my doll...

    7. Sometimes even a company is not consistent with their own stuff as far as identifying size/fit. I am learning that with luts... sometimes they list the outside measure, sometimes inner and sometimes I am not sure if the size is the shoe, the foot it fits or what... right now I have 3 pair of shoes I adore but have no feet to wear them because I didn't understand the sizing... and I think they will only fit the OLD YID feet now... ;-; My best advice, learn as much as you can about YOUR specific doll, then ask other more experienced owners of that doll what 'they' suggest as far as where to shop, I am slowly picking out 'useful' information from various places and using it to hone my own 'judgment'. Here is one tidbit... for feet... take the measure in mm of the actual length along the sole... then add 5 mm. Technically that should be how big (inside) of a shoe you need ^^. I am going to use that and take a risk on a couple of nine9style shoes ... according to the numbers they should work. But as you are finding out... you never know unless someone else can confirm it first LOL.

    8. Oh this is a very useful thread for a newbie like me! I'm very confused with all of these standard doll sizing terms. For there are SD13 Sd17 Hound and whatnot. Quick question! If SD17 is for doll with height of 65+ cm and Hound/SSDF/70cm is for its respective height, under which category will a doll with height of 68 cm fall under? And how about girl doll with height of 60 cm?

    9. again I say it.... no such thing as STANDARD size terms
Each company usually uses it's on name for it's own specific sized dolls... SD, MSD are the two most over used 'borrowed' terms... SD17 is for a specific doll by Volks that is meant to portray the age of 17.... the 'SD' in SSDF means Senior Delf... not actually Super Dolfie. All size tag need to be used as 'general guides'...

I have a Soul Doll zenith... he is 69 cm... his company term for that size is zenith but according to Volks he would be SD, he wears SSDF shoes (his feet are freakishly massive) but SSDF clothing is WAY to small. He CAN wear the SD labeled size from Doll Heart... usually. However... Cloths that fit him won't come near to fitting an Iplehouse that is 68-70.5 (the SID and EID either model or superhero type body) Not to mention that EID mans feet are even bigger. You can NOT use sizes of one company to judge the fit of items from another company... you must use the actual measurements specific to the dolls YOU have and the garments you are looking at. You can have 2 dolls that use the term SD and are 69-70 cm but they can be vastly different in shape....

dolls are generally grouped into 'GENERAL' size ranges.... think of them as Extra small (tinies) small (msd) ... now here is where even I have started to differ now that the really big dolls are becoming popular... I don't use the phrase SD anymore because I think of one end of them as large.... and the other end of the same grouping as EXTRA large... I am referring to dolls hitting the 70+ cm sizes... and who is to say where the cut off is? 70, 72... 75 cm?... it all depends on who you ask.... Anyone who says a doll is an EID, SID, YID.... should know that the doll is from Iplehouse since those are the terms that company uses but no one else does... This is not an exact hobby like it used to be before the explosion of doll companies...
