Style of BJD you thought you didn't like but ended up liking later?

Jul 6, 2023

    1. So something interesting has happened for me recently...ive been in this hobby since 2006 and for the LONGEST time anime style dolls (like dollfie dream for example) have been low interest for me....but now in 2023 i think...i can see the appeal, so much so that i now have 2 puyoodoll kumakos on layaway and am resisting the siren call of mini dollfie dreams lol. Has this ever happened to you? is there a particular style or feature of some bjd sculpts that you hated but came to love?

    2. For me it was the chubbier, more youthful look of Volks and what I thought was a more simplistic design to their joints. I didn’t even like their faces all that much! I was firmly into the spindly, eerie look of Doll Chateau, and then the distinct beauty of Dollzone when I entered the hobby. I thought I would never get into the ‘old fashioned’ dolls from Volks— I’d thought their big stylized eyes and little noses and mouths were a bit ugly.

But now I have four Volks bodies as of this evening. I think the chubbier look to their SD10’s is absolutely gorgeous, the sculpting is quite elegant, and their joints are deceptively versatile with sueding and wiring. I’ve also fallen in love with their head sculpts! I could go browsing through Volks dolls all day! 2014 me never would have predicted that 2023 me being dazzled by Volks and big-eyed dolls with teeny noses and mouths! I guess I always had it in me, I just didn’t want to admit it. :XD:

    3. I had the exact same experience OP!

I went through an anime phase in middle/high school that kind of put me off anime for life, so I was really opposed to anime dolls when I first got into the hobby. Especially since most anime dolls seem to lean very heavily into the moe or bishoujo/dating sim style, which I especially have learned to despise over the years.

I think for me the turning point was definitely Kumako, the chubby proportions they have were really like almost nothing on the market at the time. The only similar thing I can think of is maybe Kikipop?

    4. I used to really not like Volks at all. Same goes for Luts CP sculpts, which I could have gotten back then. Fast forward to now and I have considered both. I also didn't really like the anime sculpts, and now I'm obsessed.

    5. I also wasn't into volks a lot when I first got into bjds, but now I just... keep looking at them... and reading about them... looking at them again (surely i'd love a volks in my collection now).

On the opposite end of this prompt, though, I really assumed I'd love minifees and ended up selling mine quite fast. I guess I enjoy a heftier and slightly bigger body, but also the bobbleheaded proportions were so odd to me.

    6. Same. When I first started out 13yrs ago I had 3 vinyl dolls (nit my first dolls, my first were Resinsoul). I had them maybe a year and ended up selling them because they just weren't my cup of tea.
Fast forward to 2020 I started purchasing Smart Dolls and a few DDs as well, now they seem to be taking over... lol. I blame it on instant gratification..lol. Resin Bjds take soooo long to arrive, but my Smart Dolls within 2-5 days. Some of my DDs took longer but I also bought a few 2nd hand.

The other doll I have that I didn't think I'd purchase was a Fairyland Minifee, I got her for a amazing price 2nd hand, though I don't do much with her. They have fun bodies but I feel like the heads are too similar to each other.
I'm sure there are many more..lol

    7. I always favoured stylized dolls like Volks and CP, still do, but now I've come to really appreciate some of the more realistic sculpts. I don't think I'll own any that are more realistic looking than Migidoll, but I was surprised at how much more I've been looking at them. I can admire from afar.

    8. I’ve also been in the hobby since 2006, and although I did enjoy the anime look, I was totally put off the idea of vinyl in general. I love the feel and weight of resin. So all those lovely Dollfie Dreams were a solid no-go for me. Fast forward to today and the anime look is now available in resin…and in really cute, younger looking sculpts with adorably shaped cute resin bodies. My past few dolls I’ve purchased from Dollzone were all anime…for my Pokemon trainer characters. So cute!

    9. When I started out on this bjd hobby I was only into the odd slim body shape and had mostly DZ and DC, with quite a few anthros. I even went into the fashion doll size for a bit. But, in the last three years I’m totally into vinyl anime sculpts and that is all I want to collect. I have found my true collection happiness!

    10. Anything fantasy-themed, really, like elf ears, vampire teeth or anthro dolls. At the beginning I was only drooling about super mature and realistic looking sculpts and creating characters with normal lives, so nothing fantasy-related caught my attention at all.
Now, 13 years later, I love my crew of anthros and I have given my human sculpts a fantasy background. Normal-looking dolls now I find kind of boring xD

    11. Some of my most favorite fictional characters throughout my life have been anthropomorphic characters but I just never found the anthro sculpts appealing. Then I stumbled across Birdcube. I now have a Lapin/Lipu head and have ordered the Fuguir head, and now I love ALL the anthro sculpts, regardless of size. Just had to find the right one to open my eyes, I guess.

And back when I joined in 2006, I thought I'd never want anything smaller than 1/3 - again I proved myself wrong and now prefer 1/4 size. Hey, I might even get a few smaller dolls in the future. Especially now that there's a wider variety of sculpts that just didn't exist when I was new to the hobby!

    12. I wasn't into cutesy little toddler sculpts, or cartoony looking dolls, and now I have a couple of anime dolls on the way and a very disney looking Q-bi from Ramcube. And I adore them. Who am I?? lol

    13. I started the hobby 15 years ago, and only preferred MSD. I said I'd never have anything bigger, but here I am now with all SD except my first doll because I refuse to part with him.

I also said I would never have a girl, then I went through a phase where almost all of my dolls were girls, then back to mostly boys with a handful of favorite girls.

I only wanted white skin dolls, now only four of my 20 dolls are white skinned.

I thought Fairyland, especially the Chloe sculpt, was so overrated and boring....a few months ago, I got a Feeple60 Moe Chloe and I adore her! She's so cute!

I thought Notdolls were about the ugliest things I'd ever seen, until one fit my character perfectly when no other sculpt did.

I change my mind on just about everything I say I'll "never" want, so at this point, I'm just never saying never again.

    14. Whoever (many people) convinced me I didn't ever need to own a Volks doll was WRONG. I hope we've all stopped telling n00bs that Volks is overrated.

    15. Never say never! I thought I'd never want a doll with fantasy legs, but now I have a cutie with bunny peets on the way :blush I can't wait to pinch those little toes!

    16. I thought dreaming eyes were super creepy when I first joined the hobby, and was like, “Why would anyone want that?!”

Now dreaming sculpts are my favorite thing. :XD:

    17. I used to say "no girls" "no Volks" "no Dollfie Dream" "no Minifee" "no YoSD" "no more than X amount of dolls" and yet here I am with possibly equal number of boy and girls, 5 Volks, 2 Dollfie Dreams, one Minifee, and 3 YoSD, and 39 dolls. If every floating head I had could have a body, it would be 41.

Oh and I also thought I wouldn't have any realistic dolls like Sartoria J. I have 2 now. I'm still getting used to their height discrepancy but they are both gorgeous.

So for me, things I didn't think would ever happen, have happened. But now I should probably try to thin out my collection...but I have no idea how honestly.

    18. I've been in the hobby since 2005, and my preference of sculpt style hasn't changed. But I finally did buy two little child dolls, YoSD sized, when I had once said I'd never get any! However, I don't see myself acquiring any more of them. I think they were flukes? XD

    19. I'm pretty new to the hobby, but when I was first looking at dolls I really like semi realistic/fantasy sculpts (especially Dream Valley) and had so low interest in vinyls and anime style dolls. Now I'm frothing at the moth at the idea of a cute anime style doll with that chubby body style with thick legs because I absolutely fell in love with Maydoll's Lemoncat sculpt. I also really enjoy Smart Dolls now, I was so intimidated by them and wasn't really attracted to the anime style. I did some research and ended up really liking their cocoa skin option and semi-real line of sculpts.

    20. When I first started the hobby, I said that I didn't want ant boy dolls. Now, I have quite a few boy dolls I like and now have on my wishlist. I also said I never wanted fantasy skin tones or SD, but now I have a purple doll on preorder and two SDs.
