Tall BJD owners and doll sizes

Nov 29, 2012

    1. Hello!:) Long time no see.

I still have my two beautiful MSDs, but just lately I've had my eye on the big 70cm dolls. I feel like they'd perhaps be more in proportion to myself, as they're the giants of the doll world and I'm a giant of the human world :sweat.

This got me thinking: I have a few questions for you all, if anybody would like to answer them.

      1. How tall are you and what sizes of BJDs do you have? Did your height factor into which dolls you picked?

      2. Would you have a very small tiny or a very large SD if you had to chose between the two?

      3. How do you think the specific sizes of doll affect how you participate in and enjoy the hobby? (Ie, does what you do with your dolls change depending upon size?)

      4. What is your idea of a perfect sized BJD in exact centimetres?

      5. Which sculpts do you wish came in a different size?

    2. 1. How tall are you and what sizes of BJDs do you have? Did your height factor into which dolls you picked?
I'm really short "towering" at only 154cm... >_< my favorite dolls are the tall ones though! The 60-70cm ones (and I plan to own a 75-80cm one too!) I have MSDs and 16cm tinies too though, and I love them for what they are also. My height didn't play a factor in my dolls' sizes. I usually just go with what fits the charater they represent best.

      2. Would you have a very small tiny or a very large SD if you had to chose between the two?
A very large SD! >.< I found out that I don't deal very well with dolls any shorter than 16cm...

      3. How do you think the specific sizes of doll affect how you participate in and enjoy the hobby? (Ie, does what you do with your dolls change depending upon size?)
I don't think what I do changes with my dolls' sizes? The only thing I do differently is sewing. Because I sew by hand, deciding to put together something for my larger dolls requires a lot of willpower xD; I'm sure I wouldn't mind if I had a sewing machine though...

      4. What is your idea of a perfect sized BJD in exact centimetres?
      67-73cm!

      5. Which sculpts do you wish came in a different size?
      None so far o3o hmmm....

    3. 1. How tall are you and what sizes of BJDs do you have? Did your height factor into which dolls you picked?

I'm 5'4" and I like small dolls. I have two 12cm, and one 24cm. I wouldn't go bigger than that. I would feel awkward having a large doll considering how small I am! I wouldn't be able to carry it around.

      2. Would you have a very small tiny or a very large SD if you had to chose between the two?

Very tiny. Tiny dolls are the best.

      3. How do you think the specific sizes of doll affect how you participate in and enjoy the hobby? (Ie, does what you do with your dolls change depending upon size?)

How I pose them and how I set up the scene for photos changes with the size. With the small dolls, I can put them almost anywhere and create a scene, but with a large doll I would need a lot of empty space to dedicate to the scene. I think I would have trouble finding the kind of space I would need to do an SD photoshoot.

      4. What is your idea of a perfect sized BJD in exact centimetres?

No smaller than 12cm and no larger than 24cm.

      5. Which sculpts do you wish came in a different size?

      None so far!

    4. 1. How tall are you and what sizes of BJDs do you have? Did your height factor into which dolls you picked?

I stand at about 5'6". Despite this, most of my dolls are SD-size/60-70cm (more on the 60cm side of the spectrum, though).

      I want to eventually get a 90cm doll, but realistically, I'd have to keep him at home most of the time. In that regard, height has factored in, just on the grounds that I acknowledge that I can't carry around something around half my height and made of all that heavy resin. As a result, the hopefully future 90cm sits on the very bottom of my priority list. ^^;;

      2. Would you have a very small tiny or a very large SD if you had to chose between the two?

I think that'd depend on a few things, actually. Like the sculpts that were being offered. Some of the tinies have ADORABLE SCULPTS, but, likewise, some of the Larger SDs look pretty awesome. Size matters less to me than if I actually like the sculpts in question or not.

      3. How do you think the specific sizes of doll affect how you participate in and enjoy the hobby? (Ie, does what you do with your dolls change depending upon size?)

I'd say it definitely has an effect! Tinies can be easily toted around in a purse if you give them a tiny sealed pocket/carry case. MSDs are still very easy to carry around. So light! But my SD boys can be a handful at times, much as I love them to death.

      4. What is your idea of a perfect sized BJD in exact centimetres?

      Oh man, that's a tough question. XD;

51cm is a pretty good size, but so is 60cm. 65cm is a great mid-point between the two larger sizes, but 70cm is the biggest I'd go for carrying around at a convention or something.

      5. Which sculpts do you wish came in a different size?

Honestly, I can't really think of any. Mostly because the sculpts tend to be in sizes that suit them to begin with. Something as detailed as Ringdoll's Frankenstein or Zombie Sol just wouldn't work in a tiny format without sacrificing some of the sculpt's detail. Not to mention that the smaller you go, the less mature the bodies seem to be. Which could also be said of the inverse, the larger you go, the more mature the bodies tend to be. So, the cute little androgynous anthros offered by Luts, who are just downright adorable, would be forced into a more mature body of one kind or another if you sized them up. And really, imo, the "pet dolls"/"anthro dolls" kind of seem much more fitting in a smaller, cuter size, rather than the potential of sticking them on a more mature body that could be sexualized fairly easily. But that's just me.

    5. 1. How tall are you and what sizes of BJDs do you have? Did your height factor into which dolls you picked?

I'm 5'4" and i have two 60cm boys and two 73cm boys. Never thought about my height when i got them.

      2. Would you have a very small tiny or a very large SD if you had to chose between the two?

I would only get 60cm or above as i love the big dolls.

      3. How do you think the specific sizes of doll affect how you participate in and enjoy the hobby? (Ie, does what you do with your dolls change depending upon size?)

The size makes it more difficult to take them to a meetup. Also you run out of space at home to display them as they take up quite a bit of room. This fact (as well as cost)will limit the number of dolls i can have.

      4. What is your idea of a perfect sized BJD in exact centimetres?

The 60cms are a lot easier to handle, dress etc... My really big boys are quite heavy and I would be less inclined to just change their outfits for the heck of it as it's to much work.

      5. Which sculpts do you wish came in a different size?

Don't know as I don't really look at any of the smaller dolls.

    6. 1. How tall are you and what sizes of BJDs do you have? Did your height factor into which dolls you picked?

I'm about 5'9", so I am taller than my toys... I have dolls ranging from 10cm to 80cm. I didn't factor my own height into any of these doll choices, though, no. They are whatever size they are.

Generally I prefer tall dolls, but some little ones have wormed their way in here too.

      2. Would you have a very small tiny or a very large SD if you had to chose between the two?

That would depend on how much shelf-space I had left at the time of this hypothetical choice. ;; I prefer larger dolls, but the reality is a 1-bedroom apartment. I would love another EID giant, but those guys are such a storage committment for such a small living space. If I were completely out of room, I'd choose a tiny.

      3. How do you think the specific sizes of doll affect how you participate in and enjoy the hobby? (Ie, does what you do with your dolls change depending upon size?)

Well, I can carry more & heavier dolls than my smaller friends, but that's about it. ^^

As far as different-sized dolls goes, they do have to be handled differently depending on their sizes... I'm gentler with the tinies, because they're so small in my big cavegirl hands... and I have to use a surprising amount of force to pose some of the giants, so they get handled more firmly.

I don't have an ideal size. But I'm most comfortable handling 60-70cms. 65cm is a nice happy medium to perch in the crook of one's arm.

Generally, I think all my dolls are exactly the right size for themselves. :fangirl:

    7. I'm a medium-sized collector (175cm - tall for a lady, short for a bloke), and have a fair variety in doll sizes (63cm, SD13, 56cm, MSD, 44cm, 20cm, 10cm). As far as I know, I didn't factor my height into the sizes that I picked - I was more drawn to individual sculpts - but I get the impression that I have less difficulty carting around a lot of big dolls than smaller and more slightly-built people. I'm starting to really fall for my MSDs, though I'm not sure if that's just because they're an adorable matching pair, rather than anything to do with their size.

If I had to choose to have only one doll, I'd probably pick a very large SD over a very small tiny, since I sew for them, and sewing really small things is an absolute nightmare.

As for participation in the hobby - MSDs and larger are fun to sew for and photograph in indoorsy locations. Smaller dolls are better for spontaneous photos on the move (I'm becoming one of these people who always takes a tiny with them when they travel, just in case a good photo op comes up) and for making single concept costumes and personas for.

My "perfect" doll size - Hmm, either a really petite one around the 25cm mark, with really rounded, stylized features, or a 70cm behemoth that looks like a classical statue, but jointed. I fully accept that I'd never play with the 70cm one - They'd just end up sat on a shelf in a dramatic pose, looking beautiful - but it'd be awesome nonetheless.

    8. 1. How tall are you and what sizes of BJDs do you have? Did your height factor into which dolls you picked?
I'm a little over 5'10", so height of me vs my dolls never occurred to me until I started seeing threads regarding it on DOA. I have all the sizes. All of them...

      2. Would you have a very small tiny or a very large SD if you had to chose between the two?
      I can't choose XD
      All the sizes....

      3. How do you think the specific sizes of doll affect how you participate in and enjoy the hobby? (Ie, does what you do with your dolls change depending upon size?)
Yes I do. I'm not a fan of the huge guys. I think my EID's less than great posing affected my like of anything 70+. He can't sit and is so unstable standing that I'm pretty afraid to do much with him. I have a DM Glamor model who is taller that I'm equally afraid for, but he actually stands fine...I just forget because I'm so terrified of my EID crashing and getting damaged. Because of this, I tend to do more with my smaller SD sized dolls and tinies. I don't really think this has anything to do with my height however...

      4. What is your idea of a perfect sized BJD in exact centimetres?
57.5. The exact size of my first doll ;)

      5. Which sculpts do you wish came in a different size?
I've never really thought much about it, but I guess more mature MSD sized boy dolls that are not hyper-realistic would be great. That's the way most of my SD sized dolls are and I'd like to own a few of them in mini form.
It seems like there's plenty of girls out there but the boy counter-parts look way younger to me. Then the few that do exist are way too short (I need like, 45 - 47cm please - and "mature" does not automatically equal professional wrestler proportions btw)

    9. 1. How tall are you and what sizes of BJDs do you have? Did your height factor into which dolls you picked?

My own height did not affect the size of the dolls I chose, but after having a 70cm doll, I've found them to be a little too cumbersome for me to move and dress. I have dolls ranging from 25cm to 57cm, and I'm planning to get a 61cm boy, but that is the largest I'm willing to go at the moment. I'm just a little under 5' 2" (~156cm), but I'm not sure if it's my own size that made me decide 70cm dolls aren't for me. I tend to like miniature things in general, and while there are some SDs I love, small, cute things appeal to me more. I bought the 70cm because I fell in love with the sculpt, but I've found that my love of the sculpt is not enough to overcome my awkwardness with the size. Maybe if I was stronger and had a stronger preference for large dolls, I would still go for the 70cm.

      2. Would you have a very small tiny or a very large SD if you had to chose between the two?

That depends on the size you're talking about. I honestly do not want to go over 62cm or under 16cm. If I had to choose something out of that range, I would just not own a bjd at all. Honestly, these things are too expensive for me to settle for a size that I find bothersome.

      3. How do you think the specific sizes of doll affect how you participate in and enjoy the hobby? (Ie, does what you do with your dolls change depending upon size?)

I have my one tiny displayed on my computer desk for me to look at. The other sizes gets displayed in the cabinet or stay in their boxes. I make dresses for my minis, and I like to buy gorgeously detailed and well-made fashion and accessories for my large dolls. So yes, different sizes serve different functions for me.

      4. What is your idea of a perfect sized BJD in exact centimetres?

I don't think a perfect bjd for me is determined by size/height. After all, proportions affect how a doll is perceived greatly. For example, Bimong Naraes are 43cm, which is the same size as my Ariadoll Sweet, but one is slim whereas the other is chubby, and while I love my Ariadoll, I don't feel the need to own a Narae.

      5. Which sculpts do you wish came in a different size?

I have no specific sculpt in mind at the moment, but I do wish the Spiritdoll Elegance bodies came in the mini size, and that there are more realistic mature sculpts in the mini size, in general.

    10. I'm 5'5" and have dolls from 7cm to 71cm. I buy them if I love them regardless of size. I think each of them is perfect in its way, but if I were starting in this hobby today, I would probably buy dolls smaller than 52cm. I have a small house and am running out of room. When I started in this hobby, the only dolls around with the realistic faces that I love were tall, but now there is more variety from which to choose.

    11. 1. How tall are you and what sizes of BJDs do you have? Did your height factor into which dolls you picked?
I'm pretty tall at 179 cm, and while I own mostly msd sized dolls I prefer SDs and larger sizes. I love the sculpting in larger dolls and the weight behind them, my tinies and msds weigh nothing.

      2. Would you have a very small tiny or a very large SD if you had to chose between the two?
If given the choice I'd definitely go for the very large SD, dependent upon sculpt and how the body works.

      3. How do you think the specific sizes of doll affect how you participate in and enjoy the hobby? (Ie, does what you do with your dolls change depending upon size?)
Sometimes the larger size can make it seem hard to carry them around, but I can carry two SDs, some number of msd sized ones and a multitude of tinies for hours at a time.

      4. What is your idea of a perfect sized BJD in exact centimeters?
My perfect size is in the 60-77cm range. They're not to big to interact with my other dolls but are still distinctive in their size and body sculpt .

      5. Which sculpts do you wish came in a different size?
None really, while I prefer larger dolls my group of msd/tiny sized dolls attests to the fact that if I like a sculpt I'll buy it regardless of size .

    12. I think a 58cm doll would be the perfect size for me. I'm around 5'4, but I want a bigger doll (just not too big) and I think 58cm would be a good size.

    13. 1. How tall are you and what sizes of BJDs do you have?
I'm on the short side of average (160cm) and have dolls that range from 26cm through 75cm.

      2. Would you have a very small tiny or a very large SD if you had to chose between the two?
I prefer the bigger dolls, but it's really about taste rather than the size - I just haven't found that many smaller dolls that I'm fond enough of to buy.

      3. How do you think the specific sizes of doll affect how you participate in and enjoy the hobby? (Ie, does what you do with your dolls change depending upon size?)
I actually prefer taking the larger dolls out - at that size you can't forget that you're carrying them and accidentally slam them into a wall! ;)

      4. What is your idea of a perfect sized BJD in exact centimeters?
I don't really know - I'm finding myself more drawn to the 50-55cm ones these days, but I don't know if it's really because of the size.

    14. 1. How tall are you and what sizes of BJDs do you have?
I'm about 6'3 (approx. 192cm), and I have one 70cm boy. He's perfect for me, as he fits comfortably in the crook of my arm and he doesn't look too small or too large.

      2. Would you have a very small tiny or a very large SD if you had to chose between the two?
I often focus on the SD sized dolls, as opposed to the tinies, when I'm looking. So, I'd say SD!

      3. How do you think the specific sizes of doll affect how you participate in and enjoy the hobby? (Ie, does what you do with your dolls change depending upon size?)
I only have one doll, and as I've mentioned he's a 70cm doll. We've not been out much together, so I don't have anything to say in response to this question.

      4. What is your idea of a perfect sized BJD in exact centimeters?
Between 65-70cm. You know they're there, you can't lose them (as I probably would with a smaller doll in the mess that is my bedroom!), and they are the perfect size to fit in the crook of your arm! :)

      5. Which sculpts do you wish came in a different size?
      None.

    15. 1. How tall are you and what sizes of BJDs do you have? Did your height factor into which dolls you picked?

I am almost 5'10". My Dollshe boy is the only 70cm. doll I have so far. I have several SDs and MSDs and two 1/6 tinies. The only thing I don't have is a 1/12 doll and I'm mulling whether I ever want one. I lose my keys and glasses a lot...

      2. Would you have a very small tiny or a very large SD if you had to chose between the two?

See above about very tiny. Very large...I'm not a spring chicken, so I don't think I'd want anything above 72-73 cm.

      3. How do you think the specific sizes of doll affect how you participate in and enjoy the hobby? (Ie, does what you do with your dolls change depending upon size?)

Only in that there are times I'm up for hauling a carrier full of the big guys around and times I am not. At our last meet-up, I brought one SD in my arms and a small carrier with 3 MSDs and 2 tinies because it was raining. I would not want to put a doll in the black hole that is my purse.

1/12 tinies do lend themselves very well to making little houses and sets, which might be fun. That's not something that's as easy to do with the bigger dolls.

      4. What is your idea of a perfect sized BJD in exact centimetres?

I don't really have one, though I like the 64-65 cm. range for SD boys.

      5. Which sculpts do you wish came in a different size?

None, really. I am fascinated by the way Fairyland takes sculpts up and down the size range, though I don't own a Fairyland doll. If I had unlimited funds it might be fun to get, say, Chloe, in all the sizes she comes in.

    16. 1. How tall are you and what sizes of BJDs do you have? Did your height factor into which dolls you picked?

I am 5'0" I was initially a little scared of getting 1/3 dolls because they're like... the length of my leg... I started with a 1/4 doll, but I've since gotten bigger dolls.

      2. Would you have a very small tiny or a very large SD if you had to chose between the two?

I would rather have a very large SD. I can't sew for the super tiny dolls (26cm is about as small as they can get before I can't use my sewing machine) and I can't bond with a doll I can't sew for.

      3. How do you think the specific sizes of doll affect how you participate in and enjoy the hobby? (Ie, does what you do with your dolls change depending upon size?)

Not really... Well, my current collection runs from 26cm to 73cm.

      4. What is your idea of a perfect sized BJD in exact centimetres?

53cm. I love the Zaoll size the best.

      5. Which sculpts do you wish came in a different size?

Like all the 1/3 dolls! I want so many, but I don't have room!

Of my personal collection, I really wish Niccolo was smaller. Especially since SSDF bodies are hard to clothe... he's not as skinny as the dolls a lot of "70cm" clothes are made for...

    17. 1. How tall are you and what sizes of BJDs do you have? Did your height factor into which dolls you picked?

I'm about 5'5" (165cm?) tall, but I've never thought much about my own size when it comes to which dolls I like.

      2. Would you have a very small tiny or a very large SD if you had to chose between the two?

Big SD! I have a bunch of littles, but I really love the big dolls.

      3. How do you think the specific sizes of doll affect how you participate in and enjoy the hobby? (Ie, does what you do with your dolls change depending upon size?)

Yes, I think I spend much more time making clothes and fussing over the big dolls. I don't find making outfits for the little ones much fun. I like to have them, and look at them, but they don't get played with much.

      4. What is your idea of a perfect sized BJD in exact centimetres?

I really like dolls between 55cm-70cm, but prefer the biggest ones to be skinny; the heavy, bulky dolls are too much for me to handle.

      5. Which sculpts do you wish came in a different size?

Lumedoll's Tyl. He's a mature mini 45cm doll. If he was a 70cm doll, I would buy him in a heartbeat!

    18. 1. How tall are you and what sizes of BJDs do you have? Did your height factor into which dolls you picked?
I'm 5'3" and I own an 11cm doll and a 15.5cm doll. My height actually did not factor into this purchase.

      2. Would you have a very small tiny or a very large SD if you had to chose between the two?
      Probably a tiny one.

      3. How do you think the specific sizes of doll affect how you participate in and enjoy the hobby? (Ie, does what you do with your dolls change depending upon size?)
I don't treat my dolls differently based on size (at least, I won't), I treat them differently based on their personalities. ^_^

      4. What is your idea of a perfect sized BJD in exact centimetres?
I don't have a good answer to this since I haven't been exposed to a whole lot of dolls yet, but a good size I have seen was about 30.5cm.

      5. Which sculpts do you wish came in a different size?
DollZone Kay (26cm). It's be cool if they did an older version of him.

    19. 1. How tall are you and what sizes of BJDs do you have? Did your height factor into which dolls you picked?

I'm about 5"4 and my doll is 60cm, I didn't really think about my height when buying her, as long as I knew she was small enough for me to carry comfortably.

      2. Would you have a very small tiny or a very large SD if you had to chose between the two?

Probably a larger one, even though some smaller dolls are really nice I prefer the feel of larger dolls.

      3. How do you think the specific sizes of doll affect how you participate in and enjoy the hobby? (Ie, does what you do with your dolls change depending upon size?)

I think one thing which factored into my decision was that with a smaller doll it's harder to make clothes for it, which is something I enjoy doing for my SD.

      4. What is your idea of a perfect sized BJD in exact centimetres?

      Around 60-65 cm

      5. Which sculpts do you wish came in a different size?

Most of the dolls I've seen fit their height quite well, so none currently ^^

    20. I just want to say i think the best size doll is about 30-35cm. I'm looking at around that size for my first, and don't plan on going over 45.

The 70cm ones scare me. o^o I'm 5' (around 150cm) and i just do not like the idea of a doll almost half my size.
