That Wonderful Moment When A Doll Finally Pops!

Mar 10, 2015

    1. I've never really experienced that excitement until tonight. Putting my dolls together has been a very slow process for me. I've been sick so much and have so much going on in real life that finding any time to work on my dolls has been tough. Last week though I saw a HC wig that I'd been coveting in the market and I bought it from Rainbow Dash. It came in the mail today. I picked it up just now and tried it on my Miro Blue Wind. Holy COW, what a difference it made! I must have tried at least 5 wigs on her in the past two years. All of them looked rather nice, but none of them looked PERFECT until now.

Originally I started out with some cloud like blue eyes but eventually I gave Aira Neela (Wind of Blue) some bright pink eyes because they seemed to really work well with her dark coloring. I've got two pairs of lashes, one white, one dark metallic rainbow that I am going to try out to see which one I like better. She's got a rainbow stripe dress and some coordinating sneakers. I was just waiting to see what wig she ended up with first to see what else I was going to do with her.

Up till now I kind of liked where she was going but I didn't really love it. Now I totally do. The rainbow gradient thing it just completely transforms her. Even sans a faceup she now has such a big personality that it just shines out of her. I rather liked Miro Wind but I never really fell hard for her until I saw her in bright blue. In blue she was a must have doll for me but even so I just never quite got her where I wanted her to, not in the entire time I've had her. This wig, it just worked a minor miracle. I just cannot believe that one thing could make such a huge difference, but it sure does. Now I'm so excited to work on her some more. It's like she's brand new all over again...

Has this ever happened to you?

    2. Sometimes you just don't know for sure until you try a wig on a doll! I never thought my tan Dollzone Linlan would look good in a medium brown wig, but she does! I had planned for her to wear black, but brown is just amazing on her. And she looks good in many styles too, both with and without bangs.

    3. Happened to me with my Volks DWC 01 head. I felt strangely disconnected from that head. I don't know why. But when I put eyes in it - WHAM! Yes, great head, cute little boy! He's gone to a new owner since then but only because I knew she really, REALLY wanted him and he'd have a good home there and also because I was just keeping him in his box doing nothing with him. Another example is Jack, my Narin. I was about to sell him but decided to give him one last chance because he'd never had a proper face-up. So I sent him to a face-up artist and again - WHAM! He's back now, I've put him back together and boy, I'll never EVER sell him! He's gorgeous!

    4. Yes!

My first doll, Amir (AoD Chen at the time, now AoD Gu) started out with a black fur wig...then long silver with bangs...then long wavy black with no bangs....nothing was really perfect but it was good enough. then one day, just playing around, my sister's doll was refusing to keep his medium length blond wig on, so she tossed it at Amir, I tried it on him, thinking it would be so awful it would be funny...and it was perfect. Amir NEEDED to go blond. Since then, he's been upgraded to SD, go a new blond wig, and silicone eyes and he's absolutely perfect. Even though I had him for a year in the wrong wigs, his character never really came together until he got the blond one.

    5. This basically happened to me with my Little Monica Irin. She was a bit of a surprise, a raffle prize I absolutely didn't expect to win, who I had to find a place for... my main doll family is all fantasy sculpts (primarily elves), so she obviously wouldn't fit there, but I thought she could fit in as the Winry in my RP/fandom-based group. She's a lovely doll, but she always looked grumpy and unhappy, and just didn't suit the look at all, even when I got the proper wig on her. I tried to get some proper eyes, too, but they turned out to be the wrong color in person; she ended up wearing them anyway, "just for now."

Eventually, I decided that there was no way she was going to be Winry, and reshelled the character. When the new doll arrived, I plopped a spare short, dark wig on Irin, and that was it. It suited her so much better than the long blonde one! (I didn't use that one, because it was the "wrong size" wig from another character in the same group, so it wasn't an option at all, but I did get her a short, darker-colored wig that suits her nicely now.) She finally looks like she fits into the group, and is a whole new character all her own. She even kept the "wrong" eyes, as they do suit the new look very well! It definitely made a huge difference in how I felt about that doll.

    6. I have had that happen to me as well.
      Long-ish story time:

I regretted not getting a Soom Hati. When they release a human version of her in WS I waffled for a few days. WS would not have been my first choice. I was hoping for a bronze wolf version to be released in a Free Choice Event, but there was no guarantee if that would ever happen. In the end I decided I could make her into a white wolf. Get her some ears and sculpt my own paws for her.. something would make it work out! I would not pass on the chance to get that sculpt. So I ordered her with her company faceup. I already had the old default Hati outfit and a named picked out.

Just as I was about to make my final payment on her Soom held another Free Choice Event! And now I could get the bronze wolf Hati that I really wanted. Soom added her to my order and I started my layaway on my bronze Hati.

In total with the back to back layaways, I waited NINE MONTHS for my WS human Hati to arrive. And when the girls made it home I was not feeling well with a migraine. I managed to do a proper box opening with my Bronze Hati (who by this point had taken the name and outfit I was going to use for the WS doll), but I was so sick by the time I got to open the second box, I just gave her a quick once over to make sure nothing was broken and went to bed.

I had a HUGE disconnect with my WS human Hati. She was my only human doll. She had no name. No identity. None of he eyes and wigs I had on hand worked for her. I was very close to putting her up on the MP. Then I decided to get her some new eyes. That seemed to bring a little life to her. I thought I would get her a wig as well and see if it would help further. I got the wig and BAM! Suddenly she was just perfect! So much so that I ordered a second wig just like the first in case something were to ever happen to the first one.

    7. I'm not sure if my story would fit exactly here but something very similar happened to me with my Dollzone Freddy-1! First of all, I wasn't expecting to get the head at all. I didn't even know the event was going on, so finding out about it afterwards was an amazing surprise! The faceup I did for him is one of my favorites to this day and I decided almost immediately that he HAD to be Orpheus. His grumpy little face, the fact that he was coming with my other character Ealdred and the two were interconnected... Everything was going to be perfect.

So I put him in his dark mori clothes, made him a blind doll and put him in his pale eyes and long dark wig... He looked phenomenal! To the point I decided to also take his head with me together with my DC Hugh so I could interchange them on the body over the summer.

fast forward a small time after I arrived in the island of Santorini for my summer job and one morning I get the burning desire to switch him in a long bright blue fur wig I had gotten in a small blind bag. It didn't take more than a moment after I put it on his head that he almost literally took on a life of his own. The sculpt really wanted to be someone completely different than what I had planned so I just... let it happen... And watched him transform from the rather dark and morose guardian of the forest into a flashy, somewhat scary-faced straight A student, captain of the swimming club in his school in modern day Japan. How about... Nothing I could have ever anticipated? Yet I'm extremely happy that it happened; Kyoya is such a wonderful contradictory doll and Orpheus has since been moved onto a new sculpt although it will be a small while until I can bring him home.

    8. Alistair came to me bald and with red acrylic eyes. I didn't like having him sit around bald so I ordered several wigs. Some were custom-ordered and some came in those grab bags of random stuff that some folks sell on Etsy.

While I was waiting for the wigs I also started shopping around for eyes. I found a nice lady who offered glass eyes in the sizes I needed for my flock, so I bought some. When they came in was surprised to find three pairs of free eyes in addition to the ones I'd bought. One of these pairs is a lovely champagne color with fine glitter flecks. Out of sheer curiosity I stuck them in Alistair's sockets. They looked good, but since they had no wig to match them I readied Alistair's red defaults, which would match one of his custom wigs.

Half a week later the wigs arrived; the red custom wig, the blind bag wigs, everything. One of the blind bag wigs turned out to be this enormous blonde wig, complete with extensions on the back and sides. It looks like something straight out of a 1980s hair metal band's wardrobe. I put the customized red wig on Alistair and admired it for about an hour before taking it off. It's a nice wig and I'll use it again in the future, but I was dying to see how that goofy blonde wig would look with those champagne eyes.

I couldn't help laughing when I put the blonde wig on Alistair since it robs him of his masculinity, but in truth it looks fantastic. It matches his golden eyes perfectly, and since it's a normal color it'll go with any number of styles. As a joke I added some new hair clips and now Alistair really pops! He's not my Johnny's nonentity of a sidekick any more. He's got a life of his own!

    9. I have four DZ yosd sculpts that I love dearly, and have always wanted them to be finished. I was getting frustrated with the wig selections for their size head. Smaller heads just don't have many boy styles and three of them are boys (one girl). One day I found some fake fur wigs and decided to give them a try. Wow, they are perfect! And, I was able to get the colors I wanted for each doll. Next up was eyes. Third try worked, yay. Now for the clothes and shoes. Sigh. Years and years later, I finally got them dressed with shoes! Last hurdle was the face ups. I recently got them done, and....BAM! They are just how I always wanted! This all started in 2012, so I'm stoked! Wheeee, a gold star for me!

    10. It happened with Andy (my 48cm Obitsu girl). Originally, I'd wanted her to have pink hair and a little maid outfit, but I was never able to find one I liked and any shade of pink I tried on her simply didn't work. She was fine looking bald, but I really wanted a wig. It wasn't until one day when a friend of mine and I went to a BJD shop near us and began trying on random wigs that things came together. She handed me a long blonde with a little braid on the side and I put it on Andy as a joke and it just worked perfectly. From there everything else seemed to come together, from her eyes to her outfit and shoes.

    11. The moment I received my first doll from the mail, I was so excited and I kissed him :3.

Right now, I am struggling to find the best wig/clothes etc etc,
