The Different Centaurs and Horse/Deer Legged Dolls

Sep 20, 2013

    1. Hey there

      I really hope I posted this in the right section. ^_^;;;

Anyways, I was wondering, for those of you who own or have owned a Centaur or Hooved Doll(s), what are your favorites and why? How do you find the joints, balance, overall look of them?

I know that Soom, Souldoll and LUTS make these types, but are their any other BJD makers out there that make these kinds?

I am also wondering if getting or finding a Soom Shale would be a good starter doll?

    2. I can only speak for Soom's Teenie Gem centaurs. Their center of balance is pretty good, but it can sometimes be difficult to get them to pose their upper torsos and head realistically. I always end up having them leaning their upper human torsos forward, and their heads tilted up. If you lean their torsos back too far, then their heads need to tilt down really far to look good, and they look really awkward.
But I must say, I adore their little potbellies, and their joints are always pretty nice. One or two of my ponies can get kicky in the back legs, but most of them are ok.

I would suggest that if you are interested in a specific centaur, or horse/deer legged doll, that you just go for the mold that you like. ^_^

    3. Hm, yes I have seen that one! I debated it, but the deer legs, don't really look like deer legs to me. Thanks for posting it though!

AirimirOfGondor Oh wonderful! That's for that. I had seen those guys, but sadly the little potbellies threw me. I'm glad you like them! I think they are very cute besides that!

    4. Have you seen Bobobie Ai and Yao?

    5. Ah yes, I have! Thanks for bringing them up.

They are hooved, but their legs are just too skinny for my tastes. I work with horses and seeing legs that skinny weirds me out a little bit.

    6. I know nothing about horses but I have to agree. Makes me feel like they're going to step the wrong way and break D: But I'm still thinking of getting one some day.

    7. Whatever doll you really, really like would be as good a started doll as any. I don't see why having a pair or two pair of hooves vs two feet would matter to that. Just go for what you like.

I have Soom SuperGem hooved dolls (Sard and Heliot... and Euclase with giant bird feet). Most all of the big dolls can stand--but the hooves make this a bit more tricky. Even with human feet, some big guys can only stand for a bit--and whether then can stand or not--dolls of ANY size or type should NEVER be left standing for long periods!!! Not unless you don't mind them falling over, anyway.

So for me, it's just a non-issue whether then can stand well or not. I like to know if they stand as far as know just how well engineered the joints are or how good the stringing tightness is... but it's really NOT important. What IS important is up to the owner. Personally, I'd like to know how good the posing is, rather than the standing. If they can at least pose a little--that's good. If they suck, I'd like to know that, but it might not affect my liking of the doll at all.

I ADORE my dolls, but they do have some drawback... all dolls have some. They aren't the most flexible, pose-wise, but they are OK. They don't sit that well, but they can. But I still think Sard is as close to perfect as can be! (for me!)

I'd buy more at the drop of a hat. (but I'm trying to not over-crowd my house any more than it is, and don't want to spend every penny or go in debt, so I try not to buy everything I wish for)

I have a DollChateau Alberta. Despite the huge moose-horns and the spindly legs and feet, she poses pretty well... the arms are a little bit kicky, but not bad. The horns look like they'd overbalance--but they don't. She can stand well (sometimes four legs really work better than two--I mean, it only makes sense!). She can sit, but really, dolls that aren't normal human form just really can be awkward doing all human motions and poses. That also makes sense.

Quadrupeds don't fit into all the clothes regular human forms would--that also goes without saying. But that's FINE. I mean, if you want a hooved or quadruped doll, then just go with it! If you want a clothes mannikin that can wear regular outfits, that's something else.

Sometimes you have to be a little more careful of Soom big dolls with the big feet/hooves... the big heavy pieces of resin easily knock about--against each other and other things--so if they are blushed, that will cause some wear. Most dolls with human feet don't blush them or the feet are protected by stockings or shoes--and the feet aren't big huge things that knock a lot against each other. But I put a ton of coatings of msc and sometimes some acrylic gel over hooves for added protection. I do need to make sure they aren't banging against each other when moving the doll around, changing clothes or in carriers. Some people worry about this more than others.

As for what styles people like--that is totally an individual thing! You really just have to go looking around and make your own decisions. There is a lot of choice out there--even if a doll is limited and not being sold by the company, they do come up on the secondary market. And there are always more dolls being made every day.

    8. In fact race horse legs really are spindly... and the doll ones make me think of yearlings and ones that are just halter broke (i think they do that at 2-3 years?)... horses with thick legs tend to be 'work' types... heavy horses... and just find a video of an adult horse trying to lay down... they look awkward because 'they are!' lol... nothing as graceless as a horse laying down or getting up O_o. And I'm sure a foals leg bones must be 2/3 rubber the way they move O_O... so no the legs on the dolls are pretty much par for the course ... as accurate as you can get making a four legged animal walk upright... ^^

@ april ... are you stalking me lol? ... I swear every time i find a new thread you are right there at the same time LOL

    9. Wow, April, that's awesome! (My IRL name is April btw so It makes me smile every time I see your name!) Heliot is one of my favs, but if I was to buy one, I think I'd try to find a Soom Shale. He's not as small as the Bygg/Beyla but not as big as Heliot, if that makes any sense. Plus his build is right between child and adult, making him the perfect candidate for the character I want to turn him into! Though if I found a full Benmore, I'd have to snatch him up in a heart beat.

Lady Tiku: I'd like to think, in my own head where humans can have horse legs, that if we where to connect Horse legs to our selves, our thighs would need to be bigger to account for the added weight of the hooves. So yeah, the legs might be correct for the horse, but adding the spindly limbs to a human body just looks a bit... Off. To me anyways. This is all my way of thinking. There will never be a 'correct' way to the look being as they don't actually exist so its all personal taste. ^^

    10. Soom Chalcos, when appropriately strung, can stand indefinitely due to the sheer weight, size and simplicity of their hooves. /has tried, left him there for 3 days, only moved him coz I found another space for him.

I've seen Lati do centaurs, and Leeke had their 'entuars', but both were limited and not easy to find?

    11. Thanks for that Lexis! I'll have to look those up!

    12. I don't own a centaur yet but I have 2 incoming - and they are right at the other end of the size scale. I've just put a 6 inch Luts Tiny Delf centaur on layaway - they're only available until Friday this week. And I have a Daisy Dayes baby centaur in production who is even smaller. I figure with both of them that they don't NEED clothes if I don't find any to suit.

    13. I have a Souldoll Chrion Centaur in white skin and he stand like a rock. I've had no problems on rough ground or flat ground getting him to stand. He's gone to the cottage with me , into the woods and on beaches. (FYI He floats) He is just amazing and I'd never part with him.

    14. Uuuugh, I love them all. I don't have any myself, but I have loved and admired centaur bjds since '08. I really regret not being able to buy the Luts centaurs, especially Kai. The balance on most of the centaur dolls I've seen look amazing.

    15. I'm yearning for a Tiny Delf centaur myself, but I wanna hybrid it with something to give it a smaller head... I just adore that little cubby pony look that they have, even though I don't really care for chubby ponies in real life... (They're really mean!)
