1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

The First/Best Advice You Ever Got

May 10, 2009

    1. (Browsed for similar threads as best I could but with no luck. I blame dial-up for taking too long and not loadin' everything all nice like. So please don't shoot me if this has already been done. There's a lot of DoA to sift through! *laugh*)

Okay! So, I was just curious as a doll-less newcomer to BJDs... What was the first piece of advice you ever got when you were just getting into the hobby? Stories anyone?

Oh and if you can't remember the first piece of advice, I'm also very interested in hearing what you thought to be the best or most inspiring advice for modifying, photographing, or any other similar situations, out of all the information you've been given to date.

No personal opinions please. I wanna' know what specifically you've heard from others. (Of course if you wish to discredit or expand upon said advice at the end of your post, that'd be cool--just in case anyone browsing wants to try following said advice and it turns out to be bad advice. Heh.)

      Thanks!

      ----- ----- ----- ----- -----

Okay, my first advice was a rather simple tidbit, but very encouraging and sweet, considering it was given to me by the owner of the first BJD I ever saw... Basically, I was told to start looking for a doll that I would fall in love with and not base buying one off of the price--which I'm sure is common advice, but I like it all the same. For some reason that piece of advice makes me feel a heck of a lot less guilty about the more expensive BJDs I've been ogling.

And since this is my thread I'll answer both proposed topics and say: I guess the best advice I got was to join DoA in the first place considering how much I'm able to learn here...the wonderful people are just a plus. *hee hee*

    2. Nice topic! C:

The first advice I ever got was, "keep looking around. Don't limit yourself to certain looks/companies/genders/sizes/ANYTHING. Keep yourself open to new ideas. You never know what you're gonna end up liking when it comes to dolls." It was given to me by a sweet girl on deviantART who answered all my silly questions.

As for the most useful advice: USE COMMON SENSE. XD It should be implied and such, but really, it's astonishing how very much it needs to be stated. DO use common sense. It goes a long way.

    3. Don't settle for any doll, save for the one you really want. :)

    4. Some of the first and best advice I've ever gotten:
      1) Save your money for a doll you know you'll really know and love. If you buy one just because it's cheaper, you won't be as happy with it.
      2) Trust your instincts. If you're drawn to a doll, go for it.
      3) Research. Learn about them, and don't be afraid to ask questions. People here are really nice. ^-^
      4) Doll meets. Holding and seeing dolls before you buy can be a really good thing. (I didn't listen to that one, though... I ordered my boy before I ever saw one in real life. xD I had no idea what to expect)

These were given to me by several people when I first joined.

    5. Just want to say great idea for a thread being a newbie too it is helpful to get advice:)

    6. The first advice I got about dolls before saving or anything was when you get your doll take it apart (of course possibly have someone who knows dolls well there with you or read A LOT of tutorials first on how to put them back together) I went to a doll panel at an anime con and that was the first thing they told me. Granted I had had my doll for months and never even DARED take her apart, now I take her apart whenever shes loose and its a breeze.

The other advice was to not be afraid of breaking them, they are expensive but they are pretty durable, my girl has flipped over and done a 360, sure it about killed ME but she was just fine and dandy.

    7. You'll know which one's yours because you'll see the doll and for days that'll be all you think of.

    8. "Dont get it cause its cheap, moron." It was said in Japanese and rather harshly X'D LMAO.

    9. Wow, I'm seeing an emerging trend echoing the first piece of advice that I got. That must mean it's good advice after all! (Not that I was doubting it.) I wonder what other tidbits everyone got--or if that's actually the first piece everyone hears basically! Curious.

To PokerFaceBjd: Oh my god, that made me laugh so hard for some reason!

To ForeverYoung: Hah, deviantART is where I got introduced to BJDs. Funny how dA seems to influence my money these days... (My account goes by my same username here... What's yours if you don't mind my asking? I'm beginning to stalk all the people I find on DoA who have accounts there as well.)

    10. @ SilverSugar. Well, the first BJD I ever saw was a random picture of a DS Hound I randomly found online and I fell in love even though I had no idea what it was. Then, a couple years later, at an anime convention, I saw a girl with dolls and asked her about them, then promptly forgot about them after the convention. XD Then, a couple years later, on dA, I was formally introduced to the hobby, and the rest is history. C:

Oh, well, my dA name is Confidential-chan, though I don't post any doll photography (because I really suck at it). It's for my art. <3

    11. Ah, that's a neat story. Once I found out about BJD's it only took maybe about a month or two to decide I needed to have one. At first I thought they were too expensive, I mean they are, but it's not like they aren't completely unobtainable.

The advice of buying the one I fall in love regardless of price with comes walkin' by again... *laugh*

I wonder if anyone has gotten good advice for saving money... I read the thread about good tips for earning BJD money, but I wonder what one would consider the best of that sort to be. Hm?

    12. Ah, I will forever and always remember my first piece of official advice as it was given to me at a convention from an owner who's doll I was oogling and was chatting with about my own plans for a future advice-I just wish I had taken more heed to it:

"Be careful! These guys like to multiply faster than you think."

Ha! My oh-so careful plans of only wanting four and no more were so easily dismissed...and rightfully so ;)

    13. @ InkyBear. XD I really like that advice. I think I need to start telling that to people in the future. It's so true!

      .

As far as money-saving advice goes, I'd say, "never underestimate the value of change." I keep a massive metal canister in my room that I toss all my spare change into. You'd be surprised how quickly that stuff adds up. One of my friends did the same thing, and when she finally got all of it counted, it was over $800, and that was AFTER the 8% counting fee was taken out of it.

    14. "keep your dolls away from products with oil in them." Can't remember who it was, but he or she was right. Oil is pure evil in reference to bjds. I learned this the hard way when my mother touched one and had a little mascara on her hands, I wouldn't completely remove the mark because of the oil in it.

    15. "Don't be afraid to experiment with styles." This was in regards to doing face-ups and I found it really helpful because it allowed me to find out what my own style was. :)

    16. "Take your time and do your research," from the posters over at Prego and "Don't be afraid to handle them," from another owner.

    17. my first advice: "What ever you do, don't let your doll come into contact with cooking oil"

    18. the first advice i got was "hey don't put them where the sun can shine on them, they'll yellow pretty much faster if that happens...unless they're made of anti-UV resin..but they'll yellow sooner or later anyways..it's just to make sure that doesn't happen too soon."

    19. "they get addictive with time".

    20. The best advice I ever got was from my husband, when I had fallen in love with my first doll but was fazed by paying so much for something without practical use: Go for it, you deserve it!

      Thanks, darling! :aheartbea
