Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. The Government Dolls - What do you do with YOUR Tax Return?

Jan 25, 2012

    1. So I just did my taxes the other night and I'm looking at a return of just under $3000. X_x Of course a good deal of that is going to be recycled into tuition for school, but there's this rather irresponsible voice inside of me saying, "Yes, but you could afford enough for just the one doll~~"

I'm in a financial situation where I know I should be very careful, but I also know that in difficult times treating myself to a pick-me-up can sustain me for a long, long time. I don't want to feel guilty and irresponsible, though.

A friend of mine told me a joke last night that amounted to: Doll people call tax returns "Government dolls".

Do you spend your tax return on dollies? If so, do you feel guilty about it? I'm curious.

    2. Lol, my tax return is my entire 'doll money' for the year, so I guess all my dolls are Government dolls xD

Dolls are my hobby and my guilty pleasure, so I don't feel bad about doing it. All my other money goes to living. If I didnt get my tax return I probably wouldnt have any dollies!

    3. Only one doll is a Government Doll and that was my Tan Dollzone Cosmo. I do not feel guilty about it or about any of the dolls I have purchase. I'm mature and responsible enough to know when I should refrain from buying a doll because of finances needing to go else and when I can say "Eff it" and splurge on a doll . . . or two . . . or three XD

    4. hmm...Well our tax return is mostly going towards our wedding this year, which while very cheap all things considered, is still going to cost us around 2k to pull it off. That means though that what I have saved for "fun things/wedding" can now go towards more dollie spending. :P

    5. LOL! I'm only getting back $9, which is far better than the last couple years where I OWED money. In my opinion, though, as long as you put your responsibilities first, there's no harm in using tax money to get dolls. Sometimes that's the only time people can really get what their heart's desire. :D

    6. This'll be my first year in the hobby with taxes, so we'll see how much I get back. Likely most of it will go into savings/paying off the credit card. But part of it will also go to paying off dollie layaways yaaaay~

    7. I am absolutely resolved to buy my first actual resin BJD this year. I have no idea who he or she will be yet, although I do have a character concept in my head. It depends on how much I can afford and what Junky Spot has in stock at the time I get my return.

@tangiblewhimsy: My Johnny has those SAME EXACT shoes. XD

    8. Lol Well I was being a little irresponsible and spent my tax money on a tuxedo for my doll already. I was going to wait until I actually *had* the money like I was taught to, but then Freedom Teller just had to release those tuxedos... This hobby makes me more irresponsible...

    9. I'll be using my tax return to pay off the bulk of my school loans this year. In the past I've put some of my tax return funds toward dolls, however. I've never felt at all guilty about it. Why would I? This isn't some kind of pay-out that the government is giving me. This is money that I earned, and that I over-payed to the government because I don't claim any exemptions on my W-4 forms. I could certainly claim those exemptions, and then I would receive that money with my paychecks instead of in a lump sum during tax season (and thus would be earning the interest on it, rather than the government receiving said interest).

    10. I'm looking forward to doing my taxes because I know I'll be getting myself an SD with my tax return. This is the first year in a long while where I'll get a tax return that doesn't have to go toward surviving >.<! So my government doll will be the first SD in my collection... a sort of "Hurrah!" for me and my involvement in the hobby.
I really don't know how much I should be expecting. I've never worked at my current salary for such a long period of time... but as long as I have enough to put half in my savings account and still get an SD, I'll be happy! >_>

    11. Hm, so far as guilt goes I guess for me it has a lot more to do with the fact that I usually never have money. Let alone a couple hundred dollars to drop on a doll! I've grown up feeling like most large expenses are typically unnecessary, so spoiling myself at all usually makes me feel a little awkward. But when I think of what I had to do at work and everything that happened in the last year, I feel like I might deserve a little treat.

YOU HAVE A JOHNNY DOLL? Who is it? YOU MUST SHOW ME. :<

....Although rereading your statement, it is possible that you simply have a doll named Johnny. In which case, LOL. The reason I'm freaking out is because the feet in my icon belong to my doll Nino, who is a celebrity doll modeled after Japanese celebrity Ninomiya Kazunari who works for Johnny's Entertainment. Idols who work for JE are typically referred to as "Johnnys" or "a Johnny".

    12. Heh this year it is being spent on paying off part of my student loans but in years past I have used my tax return to buy a couple of dollies, I'm sure that the government would love to know that I am spending that returned money on things that are sooo necessary but are necessary to me...all well I hope maybe next year or the year after another dollie from the returns hopefully.

    13. Provided some crazy expense doesn't come up, I am thinking of using a portion of my tax return for doll related goodies. I doubt I'll be getting much this year (the downside of no longer being able to claim tuition or student loan payments :P) but I can see myself tucking that money away for my inevitable doll purchase later this year or using it towards accessories if I do stand by my current plans of gifting myself a doll for my birthday (which conveniently falls a day before all the receipts must legally be mailed out).

    14. Ok...first a tax return is money the government returns to you that you paid them.

I will likely get back about $300 (and I have 2 kids under 18). $100 of that will go into my current layaway. Normally though I get $500 from my husband's yearly bonus to spend on dolls. (Ok last year I finagled almost $800 from the bonus lol)

    15. I have done so in the past -- it's a nice way to get a little spending money when I don't have much to spend on a week to week basis. This time, however, unless it's really huge, it's probably all going to have to be stashed back for living expenses : P

    16. This will be my first tax return since coming into the hobby and I must say I am mighty tempted. >_< I've already spent enough on dolls recently and there are definitely wiser things I could do with the funds...but I'm thinking that maybe just one tiny wouldn't hurt. >>; I could still use most of the money responsibly.

    17. LOL, sorry to get your hopes up. I do indeed simply have a doll named Johnny, and since he's way OT for DoA I can't show him here. But he does have shoes that look EXACTLY like the ones in your icon. Funky ol' world, ain't it? XD

(Still, now that you mention it, both Chaeri and I are inordinately fond of SMAP...)

    18. IF I got a tax return of much money, I'd totally put it towards dolls! It's my money anyway.

but last year, I believe that $5 went to Taco Bell...>.>

    19. When the US govt. does return some of my money, yes, a bit of it gets dedicated to my leisure. I think of it as my reward for yet again surviving the fiasco that is filing taxes. I go out on day trip vacations with friends, or get a luxury I've been coveting, like a doll.

I think this thread may only be applicable to US taxpayers. I don't know if other countries have a sytem that involves tax returns.

    20. I wasn't in the hobby when I received my tax refund last year... and, as I recall, it paid for a visit to the eye doctor and a new TV, haha. This year... I have to use part of it to pay off a laptop I bought (my old one bit the dust suddenly), and buy a couch for my apartment... but! There should still be some left over... so, instead of spending it on bills or something, I'm going to add it to what I already have saved for my next doll... :) Too bad I won't have enough left to buy a body for my poor floating head....

I don't know if I could spend my entire tax refund on a doll... I think I'd feel kind of guilty. Maybe. Then again, maybe not~ XD
