It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

The Hobby or A hobby?

Sep 17, 2012

    1. Is owing BJDs your main hobby? Or is it just another hobby you have?

When I say ''owning bjds'', I mean everything related to them, like faceup, sewing them clothes, photshoting them...I guess all these apply in the whole ''doll'' hobby, unless you regular (for example) photograph other things, or sew other things that not for bjds.

Discuss everything about the BJDs as a hobby, and how much this hobby means to you? Did the dolls get you in any sort of different hobby?

      ------

As for my self, dolls are only a hobby, not the hobby. I sewed, drew and photoshoted before them, and will keep doing this even after they are gone.

    2. Its one of several hobbies to me. I'm also a My Little Pony gen 1 collector (with dabbles into Gen 4), a cosplayer, a paleontology enthusiast, a horse rider, a scare actor, and a Transformers collector!
The BJD hobby is a very warm one for me, I find enjoyment from my dolls by customizing them and ...generally playing with them, posing them, changing their outfits and whatnot. I get a lot of fulfilment from the socialization aspect, too- going to meetups, and meeting with other owners at cons and suchlike. Im not naturally a social person, I find interacting with people face-to-face intimidating and awkward (when Im not working), but at least with the BJDs I know from the start that we have something in common thats less likely to develop into quantity-oneupmanship or 'x gen is better than y gen and you're an idiot for not agreeing with me'.

Peculiarly enough, my doll collecting and my Transformer collecting have started to feed off each other. More of my dolls are becoming humanizations or inspired by my favourite TFs (Tex and Aiden are based off Vortex and First Aid, for example, and my boys Orion and Roddy are based off've Optimus and Rodimus respectively), and I'm adding mechs to my collection I never intended because their character reminds me of my doll's character and that gives them that little extra fillip of interest.

But in general, doll collecting is A hobby to me. I love my dolls, and enjoy them, but if its a choice between buying another pukipuki or Masterpiece Edition Seeker, given that they're about the same price....the jet would win. Likewise a new outfit for my SD versus MLP Firefly, or new wigs against an interesting fossil for sale. My dolls tie into my other hobbies, but my other hobbies don't rely on my dolls.

    3. One of several for me. I'm new to it tho, and BJDs will probably be more expensive than my other ones once i get really into it.

I also collect Figmas, Gundam Model Kits, and Video games

    4. I drew, knitted, crocheted, and occasionaly painted before bjds, and was very interested in photography and sewing. Getting into this hobby jump started my foray into those and and many other areas. Overall, I think being in this hobby, and especially seeing what other have done on DoA and Flickr (and having the wonderful resources this forum afford me), have made me bolder creatively.

    5. Hmm.. I guess it is one of my main hobbies.. Though the other one would be drawing really C: For my Dolls, I buy them clothes, take lots of pictures and come up with stories for them

    6. I know I have varied interests, and I think most others probably do as well. Having many interests for me leads to many hobbies.

    7. It's one of my hobbies. I have others, although I probably spend more time thinking about this one than the others. It also sucks up the most money.

    8. I have other hobbies that have nothing to do with dolls, but BJDs is probably my "main" one because it encompasses so many others. There is the searching and collecting itself, there is the esthetic work, and it relates to roleplaying and character planning.
BJDs are certainly my most expensive hobby.

    9. Collecting BJDs is one of a my main hobbies. I am also an avid Pokemon collector, focusing on rare plush, Pokedolls, and cards. I also collect some Hot Toys figures on the side, and the rest of my spare change goes to things like Power Ranger hoodies and Batman sling bags when I'm feeling nonstalgic ^_^

I definitely spend more money on BJDs than any other hobby, however I invest equal amounts of time into both Pokemon collecting and BJDs.

    10. There are so many things I WANT to do, but I just can't afford them! And I am totally okay with that. Although I AM a bit of a snake enthusiast. Lizards are okay I guess, but man, SNAKES. That is where it's AT. Now all I have to do is save up between dolls and actually GET a snake! :sweat (Woma pythons~ :D) But I wouldn't really consider snakes to be a HOBBY, because they're living animals and I really just want one, ONE, for a PET, even though there's a lot of awesome snakes out there. But that's what reptile expos are for. And I guess.... I don't know what to call my other hobby. If I call it anything other than taxidermy, which it is technically not, I sound like a psychopath. So.... yeah.....

But my dolls are still my main thing. I love them so much. They make my life livable, pretty much.

    11. Well, I have many interests. I am very interested in knights and armour, so I am about actually making a full plate armour for my big boy. He made my dream come true of not actually owning and fighting in one, but making one, understanding the mechanics, etc.

Same goes for other history clothing. Through my BJD couple, I can make all this come true.

And yeah, I have only two BJDS, who match excellently. And I absolutely have no desire to own more. I have even already my third BJD, the centaur, as it became overwhelming. No desire for more. But I want to make them clothes, and props. It fascinates me how to make several items.

My other big hobby is recurve archery. As this is not cheap and very time consuming as well (regular training), I have to carefully think where I leave my money.

    12. Many! I believe creativity is a building up kind of process. Inspiration is everywhere! <3

    13. For me it's one of many. Sometimes it's the one that takes most of my attention but most of the time
I just gravitate towards what's easier to complete (because I'm a procrastinator on top of a lazy-bum!).
Most of my other hobbies are toy-related as well, mainly I like things I can customize and as a collector
I love anime/video-game-figures, dolls, small/miniature-toys, ect but those I keep mostly in collector-condition.
The hobbies where I actually customize the toys, those are the ones I spend the most time on; "bjd" is one of them
but not the one - certainly not the most important one either.

    14. bjds have kinda ate most of my hobbies, even when I draw I like to use them as models. the cool thing about owning dolls is that it encompasses many skills/hobbies...

    15. So far BJDs is a supplement to my main hobby which is playing D&D, the dolls I have bought are supposed to represent characters and NPCs from the games I'm playing in.

    16. A hobby that relates to the main hobby I have. I've been role playing for years-- and the first doll I ever wanted to go out and buy I wanted so much because I saw his face... and he was just exactly what I pictured my character Elijah as.

I love him to bits and he's beautiful but at the same time I am scared because I need to have him modified to really look like himself-- he is supposed to have a big scar and be missing one eye from it across the right ride of his face (our right, his left). I wouldn't be so worried... except that he is an iplehouse doll and a limited one to boot! :( Anyway, all the dolls I've kept so far have been characters-- or are created inspired from the doll! I don't think I could resist giving any doll a character and backstory.

    17. 'The hobby' without question. Before BJD's I suppose my hobby was raising and riding horses.
I actually have to tear myself away into the wider community at times as I really love doing BJD related projects with any and all free time, that sounds a bit obsessive;) Oh well!

    18. It's one of my hobbies, but my only "collecting" hobby. I suppose you could consider getting piercings a hobby, and I used to collect teapots, but now BJDs are the only things I collect. My other hobbies are writing and painting and training my dog. Writing and painting do tie into the BJDs as I like to write about their characters and my painting knowledge helps me with faceups, but for me, BJDs are one of many outlets for creativity... albeit the most expensive and time-consuming outlet! :D

    19. Definitely not my only hobby. I write, I draw, play video games, collect cards, and collect dragon statues.

    20. As far as hobbies that I sink money into? BJDs are one of three. The other two are concerts and vinyl collecting which I did before I found BJDs. I usually end up splitting my time and money between these hobbies.

Right now I'm in a dry spell for concerts and don't have any records I'm really coveting so I'm focusing heavily on my dolls at the moment. I would say that I get the most out of my BJD hobby though. Writing, photography, sewing, hunting and gathering props and clothes, meet ups. It's a really fulfilling multifaceted hobby :)
