The Perfect Outfit

Sep 4, 2021

    1. I've always had a hard time making up my mind about what the 'perfect outfit' for any of my dolls might be. I tend to get a feeling on a general style and seek things that will fit. Recently, I was given a doll and decided her facial expression would look great if she was a goth teen. I didn't want to make her look like she was dressed inappropriately for her age, but also nothing really extreme that would be unrealistic to something a real teen might wear. Being a former teenage girl, I know that clothes and fashion are important to most so it's part of her character. I don't know if this is a real style or not, but I settled on something I call Boho Goth. It's similar to the fashion style of Stevie Nicks where it's pretty, feminine but certainly dark too. Just browsing Alice's Collections I came across the perfect dress. I usually don't spend a whole lot on doll clothes, because I am stingy and never spend very much on my own. After several days of looking at alternatives, this one kept in my mind so I gave in as it's so perfect for her.

Have you ever found the perfect outfit? Have you had to design your own? Did you try on some random pieces from your stash and they were perfect? Did you commission someone else to design and make a look that is perfect for your doll? If you doll doesn't have the perfect outfit, what would it be?

    2. while I can't say it's the perfect outfit yet, since I want to make a better version of it, I accidentally found out one of the dolls I was leaning for more of a early diy punk style looks really amazing with lace and frills added into the mix.

I say accident cause I needed her shirt for something, and since I didn't want her to be just sitting on my desk topless, I grabbed the only thing with an elastic neck line I had. She has a 3rd arm coming from her back which makes clothes for her 100% custom, and it happened I had a scrapped nightgown for one of my yosd that makes a lovely shirt for her xD

    3. That "boho goth" dress is so pretty!

For me, each doll has a perfect outfit, or I have plans to make them one.

My first girl came as a fullset. I can tweak things here and there, I don't believe that I would manage to do better. ( I did change her eyes and wig though, and I want to make her different shoes but the outfit in itself is everything I dreamed of and do influence that doll other fashion choices) It's actually a fairly simple white smock with a simple black sleeveless dress embellished with gold embroidery near the neck. It's simple and elegant, with just that touch of individuality. The fullset is very close to her perfect outfit.

For my third, it really is fate, but I managed to snag a OOAK victorian black and purple mourning gown that is just perfect for her. I really got lucky, as dresses from that artist usually get snapped up within minutes and that particular one hung out for a day, enough time for me to reallocate my funds.^^ I intend to make her other clothes as well, but it would probably be variations of mourning gowns/black dresses. It just suit her so well (black on a black-haired WS doll is aaaaaaaaah :D )

For my second doll I am trying things out. I have an idea of what I want, but ultimately I think I will have to sew it. I want a 16th century black armor with clothes and a king's cape in blue-black, as well as a rusted crown. That's way too specific to hope to find ready-made/in my budget XD. I guess I will be trying to make that out of worbla, because I also have been eyeing an Armor on Etsy but that would be pretty expensive...

Same thing with my incoming doll who has an unusual body type (very curvy), I don't really think I'll manage to get lucky. I want a green, modest English Tudor gown with black embellishments (either beadings or embroidery, though simple velvet ribbons could be nice too) as well as a more flamboyant 18th century cream and red gown. For the last doll that I haven't bought yet, I do want a matching Tudor nobleman and 18th century suit to go with her.^^ I could commission, but I do want to get better at sewing and I have such specific ideas that I may just have to do it myself.

    4. I seldom, if ever, find perfect outfits for my dolls - some of them have perfect pieces that would work with other things (but not the whole outfit, but I won't buy a whole outfit if it includes bits I dont want), but tusually it's some aspects of a specific garment that don't work

The majority of my SD sized dolls are children in a large , extended Victorian/Edwardian family. Finding clothes to buy for the boys is nearly impossible:
      - Sailor suit. No problem, if I want it with inappropriately short trousers, or with modern details or both.
      - Three piece suit - No problem if I want it with the wiastcoat too short, the trousers too low-waisted and nasty synthetic fabric in a choice of depressing grey, or dull dark blue or black.

Dresses for the girls at first seem easy to find - lot's of Lolita styles mimic Victirian girls dresses, except that the skirts are usually too short, or they have strange sleeves that have pretty puffs at the top but flare out toward the wrist., and they are invariably covered in plastic-looking synthetic modern lace.

I have found the occasional place selling a reasonably Victorian-looking girls style, but I have ten girls in that family, and don't want them all dressed in the same white under-dress, with a black pinafore over it (for example). Luckily, some of them are amenable to making the same outfit with variations of fabric colour, and (occasionaly) skirt and/or sleeve length:

On the whole I have to make my own clothes for them, or commission a full outit from someone (and even then I have to be a picky-pain-in-the-neck to the maker to ensure no assumptions are made, and that every detail is right - I learned that the hard way with three commissioned suits for my boys that were terrible when I got them because instead of using one fabric for each suit, they had used all three fabrics into all three suits, like some nightmarish nineteen seventies mix-and-match retro outfits).

It is a problem, especilly for the boys as I seldom get around to making my own clothes for the boys (because I don't enjoy sewing them as much as the dresses for the girls), so the boys are like poor relations when it comes to their minimal choices in clothing, compared ot the girls.

    5. I have found the perfect outfit for three of my tinies so far, for two of them I have bought a lot of outfits to find the perfect one and now need to have a sale, oops!

    6. Since my first full doll in a long time came to me with only an old wig and some eyes, I knew that she needed a complete makeover. I was used to having the infinite clothing options of the Minifee world, so I was abit shocked at the lack of options in the Tiny department. Also unlike my previous girl, this one did not have a "character" in mind, as I adopted her for her current faceup and condition. It took awhile to settle on the perfect dress, and then I had to go hunting for all of the other accessories. She only just recently got her everyday wig, and I can safely say shes in her permanent outfit now. On the other hand, my newest boy doesnt even have a body yet so theres that ^^"

    7. I love exploring fashion and creating for my dolls (it’s the main reason I began collecting BJDs in the first place.) So I’ve had great fun over the past many years sewing wardrobes for my crew. But every once in awhile you stumble upon a perfect outfit out there in the wild, and it’s always a big treat for me to spot a bit of perfection for one of my dolls that’s made by a different designer. I once found a large collection of country girl styled Lolita dresses in the marketplace here and snatched them up. All those tiny tucks and real cotton laces were absolutely divine, and it turns out they were designed by major “real” Lolita designers which was pretty cool. They were absolute perfection for two of my girls who now share them. Another “perfect” find was a dripping-in-overdone-tulle gown by Luts that was perfect for my boudoir designed girl. It was so over-the-top, but it exactly fit her specific character. Another (also, as it happens, by Luts) was a set of priest’s robes from the 1700s (the look of a padre)…absolutely perfect for the character of my angel boy. Another was a middle eastern inspired set for another of my boys who lives in a genie palace. Sometimes the perfect outfit just pops up when you least expect it. And my most recent experience happened for a character I’d actually given up on ever shelling because no doll was ever right for him…until there he suddenly was in full set…with the perfect face and absolutely dripping in gorgeous over-the-top fantasy fem boy attire!

    8. I'm a fashionista who loves sewing. Finding the perfect outfit would mean no longer searching for lovely outfits, nor would there be any more reason to design and create for an individual doll.

    9. Most of my dolls are pretty casual/goth and finding things they would wear is pretty easy.

The most perfect things I’ve gotten so far though were commissioned. I frequently commission specific tshirts from Dollheimr on Etsy, and they cost a bit more than I usually spend on shirts but they are just a necessity for some of my dolls! I’ve also commissioned two full outfits for dolls I sold, but at the time, while pricey, were exactly what I needed and I don’t regret it even if the dolls did eventually move along.

    10. I could not agree more, about the time I create the perfect outfit for one of my girls, I come up with a new idea and off I go again LOL

    11. I'd love just a simple white/off white long sleeve lolita dress for my boy but it seems lolita has fallen out of fashion in the bjd community, luckily i found someone willing to make one for me so that's one outfit down!

    12. Never thought of this, instead of perfect outfit, I need to find the perfect style. Each of my dolls have to have a style or else I feel lost when I try to dress them up.

There are some outfits I love but I don't consider it as the perfect outfit. if I were to find the perfect outfit then I wouldn't need to change them and I love to change them and find new outfits for photography.

    13. Most of my planned dolls, who are currently in the works, have some... 'specialised' styles. Hanbok befitting the Goryeo period of Korea for both men and women as well as several different social classes, garments fit for fighting bio-organic weapons (B.O.W.s), and an outfit that's a combination of East and West for a sword warrior. Some of the pieces for the latter two, such as trousers and basic shirts/tees, might be easy to source online, at places like Alice's Collections. But many of them are not sold en-masse.

In short; I have a lot of sewing ahead of me. Or an expensive commissions bill that will make my purse weep and my bank claim control of my account. :sweat

But, if they weren't 'specialised', it'd be fairly easy - if I had an ideal outfit in mind - to cobble something together using Alice's Collections or pieces already in my stash. Their fashion generally takes after my own; comfy tees, jeans/leggings, and trainers.
