1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

The Strange Little Things Unique to You in the Hobby?

Jan 15, 2012

    1. Everyone's BJD experience is different. We all get into it from different places, buy different dolls, and come to it from different angles. This necessitates that we're all probably going to have some strange little thing related to our dolls that nobody else might have. I'm just curious--what's your oddity? Is it a thing you do every day? A superstition? A memory that has great meaning to you? Or just a way of handling your dolls that you've never heard anyone else do?

Myself... I've had to drive down to the post office to pick up both of my dolls, and while I was driving I had the radio on. I ended up giving 'themes' to both of my dolls which were the songs that played during the drive that stuck out the most to me. Noire's is 'California Girls' while Amser's is 'More Human Than Human'. It might end up becoming a tradition, and I've not heard of anyone else do it before!

    2. Hmm... Interesting, but I'm not sure I've picked up anything quite yet. I'll stalk the mailman relentlessly, but who doesn't? n_n;;I guess I obsess over holding her close when guests come over.

    3. After I open a new (or secondhand ;) ) doll up and get them all set up, I have to stand them up. At least once, just to lean back and have a nice look at them. (I even got my floopsy RS boy to stand before I restrung him ;D) It's an "art gallery" moment for me, briefly, before I get down to working on faceups/sueding/etc and flat-out cuddling up and playing with them.

    4. I have to pick out a name before the doll arrives so I can get a better picture of their character. Some dolls were easy to name while others took a while.

    5. I always announce to my friends who are supportive of my doll hobby that their niece or nephew will be arriving / has arrived. They've dubbed themselves as the aunties. :sweat

    6. Aww cute! XD My friends only did that with American Girl dolls.

    7. Well, sometimes I just take out all my dolls, take them apart, clean them, restring them and then make them a whole set of new clothes, since they're naked and it's a perfect opportunity. ^^
I take apart every new doll within a week or so, even if I don't paint them, to see how they work, to clean them and to try out different stringings, just to get to know them better and to find out what they can do. ^^

    8. This. Exactly this. I dismantle them as soon as possible and restring them. I still have to do this to my Phonolus, but I'm in the middle of the exams term and I'm a bit lazy right now! UXD

    9. You may think me crazy, but everyone of my three boys went to sleep with me in the "first" days at home.
Lucius had a bit of a hard start with me, and we didn't warm up for a month..... I cuddle with them and have them in my bed the hole nigh. I've even learnd to be careful while sleeping. (as a girl my plushies allways went flying out of bed) It's somewhat tiering, but if I don't do it, I don't bound with them. (pardon my english, it's terrible today)

    10. I dunno if it's really that unique, but if I ever leave my apartment overnight, I tuck Hansel away in my bag. He's by no means my smallest doll; Sure he's big, heavy, and really inconvenient to haul about, but he's an amazing source of comfort for me when my girlfriend isn't able to be there. He's been by my side through my parents announcing their divorce and when I came out to my dad, so I just like to have him around, especially when I know something important, awful or otherwise emotional is going to happen. I also have less nightmares when I have him nearby, so he's great to have around when I have to go to sleep with a troubled head.

    11. During the first few weeks, my dolls only wear underwear. This way, I get to learn exactly how their joints moving-range and notice All sorts of little details about their bodies. (But I don't really want to get to know their pénis and this is why they have underwear :sweat)

    12. Nearly every new doll I get has to sleep next to me on their first night home. Either in the bed next to me or on the nightstand (for the little ones.) If they don't there is a really good chance they won't be staying in the family very long.

Also I have trouble sleeping if I don't have a doll next to me. I don't cuddle them or anything. I just like to be able to reach over and see them sitting there. Same thing with my dogs. I can't fall asleep if they aren't in the bedroom with me.

    13. Chaeri goes everywhere with me I can manage. When I sit watching movies in the living room, she's sitting on the sofa arm beside me. When I'm websurfing at my computer, she sits on the corner of my monitor. I even take her to work with me. True, I don't carry her everywhere--I don't take her to restaurants or stores or church--but I like having her with me.

And last year when I took her to MobiCon, she went out to lunch with me at Olive Garden. :D

    14. My second doll isn't here yet, but I've already received his wig. For some reason, for a day or two after I got it, I've been carrying it around. xDDDD Like, as if it was some sort of cat or something. It's so soft <3 It lessens the insanity of waiting for him.

    15. I talk to my gang. XD I say hi when I get back in from classes, and ask why they let their eyeballs fall out. But, I tend to talk to most inanimate objects. I like to stand them up, play with their hands and feet (if they have them.) and then it's on to cleaning, faceuping, and figuring out how to sew for them, and how the fabric is going to drape.
I think my strangest thing that I do is rub parts. It's never the same part. Mischief gets butt rubs. -giggles like a derp- Pandora's belly gets rubbed. Acacia's shoulders, and mayhem's side. I always rub in circles when I cuddle them. -feels like a creeper, hides-

    16. This totally. A few hours after arrival, or at the most in the next day or two, the new doll is in pieces on a towel to get cleaned, sanded, blushed and restrung and experimented with. It's the best part. :D
Also sometimes the most nervewrecking part

    17. What I had wanted to have happen was for me to be home when both dolls arrived. The arrival of my first doll was a complete surprise, and I tried to be home for my second but didn't make it in time. I'm hoping, if I can get enough money to buy the head I want, I can at least be home for that to arrive.

I also do the stringing/take apart thing. I haven't cleaned either of them, but I do go over the resin with a magic eraser sometimes. I take them apart to further see how they're put together. I have to get myself used to their joint system, and seeing how they're strung together by taking them apart (after I've examined the joints when the doll was complete) helps me better understand what I'm going to have to do in the future when stringing is a necessity.

    18. When i have a 'sewing day' i like to drag all my dolls out into the lounge room...even if i'm not planning to sew for them. I am also the only person i know of that carries SD and larger dolls by flopping them over my shoulders and holding onto their feet...they're secure there and it meant i can carry 2 70cm's, 2 MSD's and a tiny all at once.

    19. Aahahahah! I'm not the only one who has a 'doll song'!! When I was driving home from DDE after my first doll photo, I was jammin' out to songs I didn't know I even liked, so now those songs have a place in my heart for that reason.

I like to take my doll(s) out to dinner, whether it's to a Chipotle or sushi or whatever. It really made me get used to having a doll. I take my girl out as much as I would go out with friends because whenever I'm free, friends are not, and whenever my friends are free, I'm not. T-T

    20. I have found I'm a lazy owner! LOL! I hate doing my own face-ups even though I've gotten pretty darn decent. And right now I have a long queue waiting for painting. In the meantime a lot of other things are going on and I have two half painted dolls that I started before X-mas and still haven't finished, plus two others with no face-ups and 'pet doll' needing blushing.

I only sew for swaps! It gives me more oomph to get things done. I want to change that though! I have patterns I can use for Rosettes, and lordy they are hard to buy for!

I don't string or unstring a doll unless its absolutely necessary! I hate doing it!

I don't worry too much if I miss the postman and I don't stalk packages online! Usually toward the end of the wait I go and check the shipping to see where it is, but on the whole I don't worry.
