1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Theatrical Clown/Mime-themed Dolls?

Apr 2, 2022

    1. Hello All,

How common are the aforementioned themes in the BJD world? And do you own any dolls who fit either the theatrical clown or mime aesthetic?

(By theatrical clown, I mean jesters, Harlequins, Pierrots, etc.)

    2. They’re not resin, they’re porcelain; try Forgotten Hearts. The clown, or jester makeup is particularly good with their artist, and they are almost known for it now.

    3. I don't know how common that theme is, but I have a doll that's character is a superhero with a Jester theme, but I don't have any good photos of him. I keep meaning to take some of him, but have not had a lot of time for doll photos.
My friend did Jest's face up it's done to look half in jester make up, Jest is a Impldoll Glenn.

    4. It's not that common as some still find clowns scary.

I have quite a bunch of the forementioned themed dolls. From very classical looking clowns to Jesters to Mimes.

Just some photos of them as I don't want to post them all (my overall theme is Circus... therefore I have a lot who fit the theme).

    5. I have circus themed dolls.

I know there's a russian artist who makes beautiful clown dolls, I think they might be porcelain not resin though.
Island doll have "Sense Circus" and Ringdoll have done a few circus/clown themed dolls before as well. I think Doll Chateau have too.

    6. I don’t have any, but I do have a character I want to flesh out into a doll, haven’t decided size yet…but the thought of a little clown character is just the bee’s knees to me.

    7. There are some excellent examples in that thread!:) I have an Aimerai Scraps Illusion whose company face-up was nearly there in the clown realm, so I simply enhanced it to take it the rest of the way. My character is a antique french automaton from a long defunct carnival.

    8. I have plans for a couple clown themed dolls. Finding the actual dolls won't be that hard since I'll be doing the face-ups myself. However my main issue is the clothing. It's so easy to find casual clothing, but I don't just want them wearing pants and a t shirt y'know?

    9. It's one of the more common themes I've seen BJDs styled as. I definitely can't recommend dollmakers that cater to it (I don't know of any offhand; I'm always looking for blank slates, not something already put together), but any good faceup artist can do clown makeup.

As for me, I do have Carina, who performs street theater under a Pierrette-type persona named Coquette, complete with sad clown maquillage. Her entire narrative is based around the traditional pantomime story turned Sapphic, and in her favor: Valerie (Columbine), a famous actress trapped in an unhappy relationship with Julien (Harlequin), who contests her budding, mutual romance with Carina (Pierrot).

Love seeing her precious face every morning. :sorry

    10. It's a theme I've seen, but then again, I was probably looking for it, so it's around, if not super common. There have been releases of circus and French clown themes, as other people have listed, but a few of us have just gone for it with a sculpt that worked for the character. This is mine, his name is Sasha.

    11. I want my next bjd to have a sad clown face, so I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks this style is cute!

    12. I would have to agree, if you're comfortable with a blank doll and customizing it to fit your vision, then a good faceup artist could do clown makeup... and perhaps others who are skilled at sewing could do the costume. :3

    13. I no longer have her, but my Dearmine Dante was clown themed. Her faceup and blushing are by Sour_Dotz/Angel Addiction, and I made her dress. I ended up gifting her to a friend.

    14. I don't have any so far, but I have this mockup of a face-up I planned on doing for this really cool head. Originally I wanted the face-up to look ethereal and angelic but the mockup looked a lot like Kefka, specifically. I don't know if I will go through with it but I do like it so maybe I will?

    15. I see them every once in awhile. They can be really gorgeous.
