Too many joints?

May 9, 2014

1. Hi there,

I was wondering if you guys ever think it's possible for a doll tohave "too manyjoints." For example, some people don't like jointed hands
I don't like most yo-sddolls actually because the amount of joints on their small bodies looks weird tome personally

How about you guys? Do you like jointed hands and dolls with lots of joints, and why? Are there dollsyou wouldn't buy because of the joints?

For example, I don't like the standard jointed hands with every part of a finger joint, but I LOVE the new hands doll chateau have brought out, and wish more companies would do them like that.

2. Wow, crazy joints! :XD: She'd make an excellect cyborg doll, haha
I personally quite like the look of the jointed hands, although I get that a lot of people don't. I'm not overly enthused about thigh mobility joints myself- granted they give extra poseability but I don't like how they just... cut the leg off (I'm thinking about Iple here, just started in this hobby so I haven't familiarized myself with many brands yet, so I don't know if they're all the same?). Plus there's no joint there on real thighs so that's another reason they kinda bother me :nowords: (I like both realism and stylisation, but thigh joints lie outside of stylisation to me :XD:)

3. I like having certain joints. Wrists, elbows, shoulders, ankles, knees, waist, neck are a must. Beyond that I'm not as picky so long as the doll can sit and stand okay. I'm not really a jointed hands fan though I have seen some that look interesting. One of my dolls has more joints than the others, has mobility thighs and double joints here and there, but she can't sit or stand half as well as some dolls that don't. It's kind of driving me a little crazy. I mean here she is with a supposedly better body and yet she poses half as well as the cheaper dolls do. The body she is on has great lines, and particularly nice hands and nice boobs compared to a lot of others in her price range but I'm still tempted to swap her head out anyway just so she can sit and stand better. It really depends on the particular doll body as to whether or not their are enough joints for it to work. Some of my dolls work better with less of them but I have a couple I'm tempted to take a dremel to because in the end the few they have just don't seem to be enough...

4. i don't like jointed hands, to me they look very fake even if it is a doll. it seems to take away from pictures when i see so many joints on a hand. other than hands joints do not bother me as usually they are covered by clothes.

5. I'm not particularly a fan of jointed hands mostly because I've only seen them unposed/flying all over the place. So they tend to look a little creepy. However, I've seen plenty of well-posed jointed hands! I think it's really about how you capture it.

6. not sure how I feel about jointed hands having never seen them in person. I think the posability would be awesome but they do kinda look like Transformer hands. I kinda like thigh joints and I wish more dolls had bicep joints. Bicep joints are just great in my opinion.

As for too many joints...well if they serve a purpose cool if not then lose it. Not a fan of the extra joints on some DC dolls, but I think thats largely an asthetic thing for me and less on functionality. They look like they'd work well, but to me they make them look like Kaminoans (star wars).

7. The more poseable a doll is the more fun I have playing with it, dressing it, and photographing it, for sure. There have been dolls I decided not to buy because they weren't double-jointed. But dolls can also look wonky when the only concern is the ability to pose. The "cyborg" look with tons of joint lines doesn't bother me so much (my dolls usually have clothes on anyways), but if it doesn't really look organic or close enough to human proportions it will look a bit strange to me.

I think it's a balance between poseability and looking organic/soft.

As for jointed hands, they can look odd. I think it would be better to just have lots of option hands that are magnetic, but I also like what Doll Chateau did recently with the joints where the palm meets each finger.

8. Dollshe...
Dollshe 35S and 32S are like the definition of too many joints. They would be great if it actually helped the doll pose, but most of their extra pieces seems to be there for nothing. In some cases, they even make the posing worse as it is the case with their separate butt cheeks that makes it hard for the doll so sit.

I had heard that they had made that body with so many pieces to avoid it being recasted, but I'm not sure if it's the case.

Aside from that, I like a good balance between possibility and aesthetic. Double jointed dolls usually do that for me

9. I had to look up the Dollshe 35S and 32S. Wow.. that is a lot of joints! I am not sure I would want that or not!

I am okay with jointed hands. I think they are cool, though, I do not own any. I will probably get some in the future. They seem like a good idea vs having to change hands for different poses.

The only dolls that I have seen with too many joints in my opinion are the Doll Chateau dolls (Christina). While they are stunning, that extra neck piece freaks me out as well as the ankle joint and jointed toes....

10. I just got a Crobidoll that comes with high-heeled feet attached to the lower leg without an ankle joint. (they also have flat feet with ankle joints so they are On-Topic for DoA). I have to say, I kind of like how sturdy she is when standing.

I like seeing well-posed jointed hands, but sometimes they DO look a bit too joint-y to me--and I know I'd be really bad at posing them correctly. So, for other people, I think they are great.

I'm not sure how I like how some double-jointed elbows and knees look... although posing is better, so it's a bit of a give and take for me.

I don't mind losing some posability for aesthetics... but having some posability is nice, too. I think the engineering is important. I'm not too worried about number of joints just on their own, though. If they work, they work...

11. I'm not a fan of to many joints, because they mean more work for me, and most of the time, more frustration. But I love jointed hands^^.
Something I would not buy, are the DC sculps, they can be beautyfull, but the extra joints are not for me. The Dollshe mentioned above is another example. And on the opposite of jointed hands, I do not like jointed feet. But all just personal taste^^

12. For me, yes, there can be too many joints. It really depends on the looks and if I don't find the way the joints are sculpted aesthetically pleasing they're a no go. Posability isn't that important to me, I just don't really need that. So I'd rather go with single-jointed elbows/knees I like the look of than strangely shaped double-jointed ones.

That extends not only to limbs but bodies, too. Of the 6 dolls I currently own, 4 have two-part torsos and 2 have non-jointed torsos. And, surprise, I like the single-piece-torso dolls better, because I find them more pleasing to look at. (I don't care that they can't pose for ****, they don't have to anyway.)

Jointed hands I do find kinda fascinating, but in the train-wreck-cannot-look-away way. I wouldn't want to own some, I'd think the posing (and probably permanently scratched/chipped blushing) would be too much of a hassle.

13. I'm an old fuddy duddy, and I much prefer stability over flexibility, so yes, dolls can have too many joints and I actually much prefer single jointed bodies over double jointed ones. They on the whole tend to be much more aesthetically pleasing and more stable at standing and sitting.

14. I like all the standard joints and double joints. The torso though, I have found that I have a lot of posing issues in the torso for all my dolls that have a 3 part torso. My Minifee always leans to the side and my Resin Soul arches her back. I have no experience with jointed hands but I like the look of Doll Chateau's better then the standard jointed hands.

15. Well this really depends for me. I like the idea of double-jointed everything, but 99% of the time the joints are ugly, difficult to deal with or just don't work the way they should, and all they do is frustrate me and make me hate the doll. There are a lot of dolls from popular companies I will either never own or never own again, because I can't fiddle with my dolls for an hour just to get them to stand when my single-jointed dolls pose just fine, way faster and with more stability.

I've never liked the look of that DS body (I have the Pure body, that's about the limit of joints for me lol), it looks insectile to me, or cold somehow. I have a lot of jointed hands myself, but once I took a photo with 5 dolls and two of them had jointed hands...that was the worst thing ever. Everything would be perfect and one freaking finger was always out of place. It's hard to get most of them to look natural and they're all way too finicky. Yet I still have like, 5 pairs XD
And kind of want more.

Then there is Doll Chateau. All my joint-hate goes out the window... I can't help it...something about them is love. I have the Y-03 body with all it's jointy neck, wrists, ankles and fingers and toes and I just love it. I hate that I have shoes on it because I love the toes. Those fingers are easily my favorite jointed hands of all, they're so elegant and they actually look natural. The extra-long neck/arms/legs just look graceful to me, and yes, a little creepy, but I like it. I actually love the way they do joints, they don't try to hide them or disguise them - these dolls have joints and they run with it. They're pretty instead of blocky and hideous and they go with the aesthetic of the dolls. And all my DC dolls stand. So that helps XD

16. The doll-chateau dolls' extra joints actually make me feel mildly creeped out. It would be one thing if they added enough joints to the neck to be realistic, like a human's neck, but as it is, when I look at them... they give me the impression of something alien, from a horror movie, because the extra jointing seems like extra pieces of bone that would make their joints bend in ways no human can. Which makes me shudder.

17. Give me joints! :mwahaha

Um, seriously though…I like joints, but basically that isn't really the deciding factor for me. I have to like the sculpt of the body already, then I think about the joints. If a company has the option for more joints (for example Iplehouse's mobility thigh) then I will include those in my order. On the other hand, if a body has a one piece torso and heel legs with no ankle joint…well, that's fine too, just as long as I like the aesthetics of the body.

In terms of the joints specifically though, I like all the joints and the possibilities they represent. I don't mind if I have to fiddle with the doll because of them. I know I am in the minority, but I love mobility thighs! It means my dolls can daintily cross their legs. Yes, please.
I do own a pair of jointed hands. They are fiddly. You have to go into posing them realizing they will take a lot of patience, but the pay-off is worth it once you get that pose. ^_~
(That said, stringing jointed hands…that is a nightmare!!! >.<)

As for the dolls mentioned above who have "extra" joints in terms of what you see on normal dolls (Doll Chateau, Dollshe), I do not own any of them, but I do admire them. I love the jointed whole fingers and toes of Doll Chateau, and I enjoy the aesthetic of the gangly neck, arms, and legs too. I have a character that I don't know if I'll ever bother getting a doll for, but if I did, it would be a Doll Chateau for sure because of those beautiful joints. I also was really interested when I saw that Dollshe bodies had…er, separate butt cheeks. (That's an odd sentence…) Um, but it is really a natural human pose that other dolls can't capture, so it really caught my attention. I really have a lot of respect for doll sculptors who can design a doll that can mimic those little motions of the human body that we take so for granted.

18. I am reminded of my DBDoll Rongers, multiple jointed everything (I recall his elbows had three parts to them, so as not to get an awkward bend showing when posed). Didn't know what to think at first with the unexpected extra jointing in wrists and hips and the like, but he is actually hands down my best posing doll ^^;

I can admit my liking for extra joints on dolls, especially torsos, love three-part torsos as long as they aren't directly under the bust, doesn't mean I won't get something with less mobility if I like it anyway (one part torso on a tiny? Yep I have one of those). Jointed hands and actually quite interesting looking, and I would like to have some for my DZ Cloud. Wouldn't like to restring them though, oh boy. Doll Chateau jointing is quite fancy actually, I like it, just not a fan of the actual bodies themselves. Maybe one day I'll try it.

19. Personally I don't let them smoke indoors but what they get up to outside is anyone's guess!

20. I like the look of jointed hands etc.

However, I really don't like tinies because I look like they are ALL joints and no body parts XD
