Trouble Doll/Problem Child (the menace of the bunch!)

May 18, 2014

    1. Do you guys have that one doll in your group that just gives you nothing but trouble?
The one that seems to try and make everything difficult for you? If you restring it somehow something goes wrong every time, maybe you pick it up and their eye falls in?

Or is this just me?… Tell about your 'problem child'

I have a doll that I generally try to avoid touching because something will always screw up. I think she's cursed, either that or she hates me. :|

She originally was a very problematic order, super stressful and ended up taking 3 months to arrive. I should have known then. I refused to give up and cancel the order, I decided to fight for her.
On the box opening day her face up was very different from the default, I had bonding issue with her, eventually I ended up re-shelling her. TWICE!

From day one she's been the one in the bunch (to name just a few) with swingy legs, I'll attempt to fix it, her string falls inside and she'll come apart. I once spent an hour trying to glue her eyelash in. I got so mad with her I wanted to throw her at the wall. From then I decided to just let her sit and look pretty. I will occasionally stroke her hair in passing so she knows I do love her. ;)

Yesterday I changed her clothes to a summer get up and guess what, her damn eyelash falls out again! I placed her back, put her eyelash somewhere safe, patted her head gently and walked away. :eusa_sile

Glueing that sucker back in is a task for another day. :eusa_naug

How do you deal with your little terror, time outs, hissy fits?
Calmly come back when you want to have fun with the doll?
      (Teach me your ways!) :eusa_pray

(I do love you Merry, the cute red head in my sig, but you drive me NUTS!) :aheartbea

    2. Oh gosh. I don't think I've had NEARLY as much trouble as you with my "problem child" but my newest doll has been such a hassle for me so far. I've only had her for a little more than 2 months, but she's already gotten so many injuries - even more than the doll I've had for over a year and a half!

First time was me taking her home for spring break to work on some project stuff, and she just kept falling over and falling over during the bus/plane transit, ruining all the hand blushing I'd done a few days prior to the trip, on top of getting black marks all over her face that I had to painstakingly erase.

      Second time was the worst. I was trying to get some better shots of the new faceup/blushing that I'd done for her and she promptly fell off the coffee table and hit my camera's lens, ruining that brand new 2-day old faceup AND getting permanent resin damage on her leg. I had class that day, so I was forced to wait it out and attempt to calm down while being stuck in organic chemistry lab for 3+ hours. I've since redone her faceup but I'm still looking into solutions for the leg dent. = =;

It's unfortunate that I have to be doubly-careful with her since she's my most photogenic doll, but oh gosh I hope nothing happens during my next trip in less than a week...

    3. My Doll Chateau Charles is a bit of a kicky little guy (could be his stringing?) so he mostly stays curled up which makes me sad. I really need to try kips or something. I'm terrified to hot glue suede his joints because he's such a thin sculpt and my other attempt on a different doll didn't go so well. But the worst thing was when I was trying to get him to stand and his extra ankle joint buckled and he FACEPLANTED onto the floor. :...( I actually cried that day. Ever since then, he stays within grabbing range and never poses higher than a kneeling position. I know resin is tough and all, but I'm not taking any chances. ;D

    4. My problem child is Remi my Island Doll, he has remained loosely strung no matter what I do, he is floppy, I can't get him to pose like I want. Plus he is snow white and everything sticks to or stains him. I have changed his name/character because he didn't fit the one I got him for. Also, I can't settle on a color scheme for him, he has gray eyebrows and white lashes, I took off the black ones he came with. I've had him for a year so we still have time to work things out.

I still think he is cute and love him, but he tends to sit in his white homemade longjohns a lot. (Does that constitute time out?) lol

    5. I have two who alternately make my happy and drive me crazy. Their both tiny, a 9.5 cm Real Puki and a 14 cm Banji. They both have annoying wigs and are kind of hard to pose. The Real Puki has a fur wig that is hard to work with, and the Banji's wig is made to stretch to stay on, but it pops off! Hot gluing it on worked temporarily, and I finally resorted to super gluing the damn thing on. Naturally when I had it position just right the glue didn't stick to her head. So now it's super glued on too high on her forehead. Augh! They are both hard to clothe because they are so small. They can both wear some Kelly stuff, but otherwise I have to hand sew. And I can't put sleeves on anything I make the Banji because her hands get caught in the shoulder seams! The Real Puki now has enough clothes and a wig cap has made her hair behave a bit better.

    6. Mike.

      Without a doubt.

Mike is a character I've had for around 15 years now, first was shelled as a ragdoll. I began looking for a resin shell in 2009, but nothing looked like him. Then for the holidays, JunkySpot sent me a DiM Robel head and it was PERFECT. So my first thought was "Mike is coming together, perfectly!

      Wrong.

      So far:
      1. Being an old, discontinued head, NOTHING matched him. I started out getting him a 70cm ResinSoul body. Too pink, posing drove me crazy, and I didn't like the proportions. So I tried 60cm Bobobie. Too slim/short and still too pink. So I tried AoD. Too buff, too pink. FINALLY, I found an old DiM body at an affordable price....even it doesn't match! The head is too white/pink.
      2. Mike is a very tattooed character, so all four of those bodies got full tattoo sleeves, tattoos on his neck, chest, hips, stomach, hands and back....all of which chipped within a day.
      3. Eye putty does not stick to him. No matter what kind I try, his eyes fall in.
      4. I accidentally left his eyes in during a faceup when I was still new to the hobby....I like the look, actually,he looks stoned (which fits...) but can't be good for him.
      5. His rings scratched his hands.
      6. No wig is suitable. He's had probably close to 10 different wigs. I don't like any of them yet.
      7. DiM calves are thick and his original boots didn't fit.
      8. DiM is also tall, so his old pants are too short.
      9. He looses jewelry constantly (his nose, lip, nipples, navel, junk and ears are pierced)
      10. I sold his old bodies for less due to the piercing mods, so lost quite a bit of money

I'm sure there are several more things I've forgotten....yet he sits there grinning at me, like he thinks it's fun to annoy me. That's Mike for ya!

    7. lol Aww guys, I feel for all of you!

peppercrushes Oh I think you had it worse than me with all the damage! :0

Keep at it CloakedSchemer, that exactly what it was like with trying to get Merry perfect, she came together in the end but it took 4 years :/

    8. Kazumi my second MSD. She is my 'go to' girl. I will NEVER take my other dolls out into rain but because Kazumi doesn't HAVE a face up or body blushing to ruin, she is my go to girl for the dangerous stuff as it were. I've taken her to a museum, to the fabric store, out into a thunder storm where she promptly got soaking wet. She's fallen off of shelves even in a doll stand and she has....Thunder thighs..Her butt is HUGE. My DZ hybrid girl Noah is NORMAL proportions albiet a slim MSD just like the other two so they share some clothes...But very few shared outfits. Kazumi has lately been a pain in the rear end, she won't sit straight, she will barely stand up. Her arm when I tried to have her 'hug' Noah actually came up and slapped the poor girl upside the head! (Kaz she's done NOTHING to you) So I am working with her LAST when it comes to my sewing projects. Noah is more photogenic lately so she's been getting extra spoiling, Avalon is re-strung to working order so more spoiling, Vala needed more clothes so more spoiling...Kazumi used to be the doll I spoiled, she had all the pretty dresses, a proper kimono, several different pairs of shoes...Now she's a pain in the butt and I am ashamed to admit the thought of selling her has crossed my mind more then once. I am NOT giving up on 'er though...Her body's already been through three owners...I am determined to make this her permanent home.

    9. I have two. The first one is my Migidoll Ryu. He's fine now, but it took me years to get him to work.

When I first got him he came with a Volks SD13 body, unstrung, which was fine, even though I'd only restrung one doll at that point (David was my fifth doll, first bought second hand), and not well. I was given perfect instructions on how to string him and had no problems that very first time.

Unfortunately Volks and I have have issues when it comes to their bodies spontaneously unstringing...and this is how it all started.

David had a thing about unstringing every time I touched him, to the point where I was afraid to go near him. Because I was a noob, and didn't know how to do anything, let alone string a doll, it would take me forever to fix him, parts would fly, blood got drawn (a lot - I bled on him a lot), heads and shooks shot across the room. It was awful.

Eventually I realized at least part of the problem was the shook was too small for that body, so I replaced it, which stopped it from restraining on it's own. One good thing came out of this mess. I can restring anything in about 15-20 minutes now, and some of my dolls with my eyes closed. XD (except the one-part torso SD10 boy body...which also unstrung itself 5 minutes after I got it - and took me hours and many curse-words and tears to get back together).

I had kept the face up commissioned by his previous owner for about a year before I finally had to redo it...he was so yellowed he looked like a zombie next to my other dolls, and people kept questioning me about his prior "life" which ticked me off to no end.

New face up took care of both those issues, but that Volks body still plagued me. Next my other slouchy dolls he looked stiff and unreal, which doesn't bother me with all my dolls, but because I was trying to pose him with one of my more natural-looking mobile dolls, he always looked awful.

Eventually I tried to sell the Volks body....but no one ever wanted it. I ended up switching his body with another doll I had. This was an old Iplehouse body. David had this one for a while until I bought him an AOD one. I hated it....it was way too short and I couldn't get over the hands, so that one went as well, and somehow in selling a few of my dolls and doing body-switches, David ended up back on the SD13 body XD

To give you a decent time frame, I got David mid-2008. All the time I owned him my "dream" body for him was the Dollstown 15yr. I had done research. I had asked questions. I had even gotten to try his head on one. It was perfect, exactly what I wanted.....and way more money than I wanted to pay for a doll body - especially since I couldn't sell the Volks body (I had it up twice, no takers) to help pay for it.

In 2012 I heard it was going to be discontinued and panic-ordered it. When I think of all the crap I went through for this doll....I just want to cry. The second I put him on the DT body he was perfect. His old, yellowed self even matches it perfectly! I haven't had any issues with him since. WHY didn't I just order it way back in the day?! I could have skipped through all that pain lol

My other problem child is one of my 80,000,000,000,0000,0,0j0ghhj0sth0srth0art Dollmore Kara Klums.
He's such a wreck I blogged about him twice (three times really), so I won't post it here. If you feel like wasting about half your life (in case you haven't noticed, I use a lot of words) reading about my issues with this one doll, it be here:
      Part 1
      Part 2

And lets not forget his final retaliation
      Part 3

Seriously. And really I could keep going, it didn't really end there. I should do a follow-up....

    10. This will be long, you have been warned.

Fathead. Fathead is my problem doll by a country effing mile and as if you couldn't tell merely from the lovingly applied nickname, he's developed a rep amongst those who've met him for being a royal and continual pain the in arse. I should really have known he was trouble from the get go when I broke my own, thoroughly sensible NO SD's rule to buy him because the company that made him looked like they were either going under or about to undergo some serious design changes. Distressingly, I knew without a shadow of a doubt I would regret not bringing him home if I didn't just give in and purchase while he was still around. Also he lulled me into a false sense of security by being cheap. I have now come to realise he is, in fact, my most expensive doll just by default based around the quantity of money I've had to spend on him SINCE purchase.

Now, I will grant you that in ONE respect, he has met expectations. The company did indeed have a drastic stylistic change, discontinued basically everything before reopening with their new stuff and now I believe I own the only one of his sculpt left anywhere. Presumably everyone else threw theirs against a wall long ago. I can't say I blame them.

He arrived home from the company, with the hideously expensive company faceup that had looked so delicious in the photo's having taken a record breaking MONTH to get through the UK postal service (*twitch*) and then when I opened his box, I discovered that company photo's are lying liars and that beautiful faceup was in fact a hideous, BROWN mess. Thus began the issues with his stubborn self! That was his first faceup. I'd like to say that I've kept count on how many he's up to, but truth be told, I lost count somewhere around double digits.

The second joy of his box opening was that the body he came on from the company was possibly the single least well engineered bit of resin I have ever come into contact with, and I say this as someone who has modded and worked on hundreds of dolls for others. Genuinely, it wasn't even good for junk. Unshockingly, that thing lasted the sum total of three days in my ownership before I sold it and began the research on what was likely to match the head. EVERYONE who'd bought from the company assured me that Luts then newly released Realskin was a perfect match. Seamless, they said, you won't even need to blush, they said, but they weren't working with Fathead, were they, so naturally when I paid through the nose for a brand new SDF body in a split, the resin was so HILARIOUSLY mismatched, I ended up taking great joy in hanging his head in a window for a week to tan the WOAHBRIGHTPINK off a bit.

End of the issues? Oh please. Four, maybe five of my faceups, several from other people, some heavy, HEAVY modding in which he broke three seperate dremels, a point where I feared him entirely lost abroad, arguements over him (I kid you not), ENDLESS quantities of clothing purchases that didn't fit because he owns the only SDF body in the world not a standard SDF size, damage to his head, MASSIVE customs fees attempting to get him back from overseas customisers, uncontrolled children at a meet shoving over the case he was in and very nearly shattering his hands...

FINALLY, I gave in and paid a truly fantastic artist to paint the little ***** head for me, he rolled home to be restrung for the nth time where he drew blood on me ONCE AGAIN with his s hook and has taken great and unending, SMUG joy in biting me whenever I pick him up ever since. He is truly the anti-doll. He can abide merely one person in the world touching him, and it's not me, it's my friend who owns his best friend. He can and will fall on you, nip skin, kick, collapse, headbut and generally be obnoxious to everyone else including me. He's been through four pairs of eyes, at least 5 wigs and I don't even know how much MSC. He holds the record for the most money I've ever spent on a faceup and he's chipped it. He is a loathesome, vicious little brat and I ABSOLUTELY adore him.

Other people do too, because once upon a time a truly wonderful person who barely knew me bought him the SDF hands with the veins in and sent them to me just out of the blue because she knew I wanted them for him. How one evil troll of a resin can inspire that much love and hate in people is beyond me, but there you go! The magic of BJD's in a nutshell!

    11. Ardese gives me trouble sometimes. He arrived strung a bit tightly, so his neck has the "kicky" affect. If I touch his head too much, he swings it away from me, almost like he's scoffing me and saying, "NO!"
It suits his personality at least.

He's also been hard to put the character into. His face up is WAY darker than the sales pictures depicted it to be. It also seemed to be a little rushed as certain details like his lower lashes are a bit blurred/covered up with dark eyeshadowing. He also arrived with his eyelashes in a little plastic baggy so I had to apply them myself, which I was not expecting to do. I've had to order his wig twice (the first time it was the wrong size, I ordered it before he arrived and I assumed that the 64cm dolls also had 8-9in heads? Apparently he's 9-10in), I've gone through several eyes with him and his eye sockets aren't smoothly bevelled so he has a small gap if the eye has too high of a dome. Also realizing that he's technically a SD17 size, all of the clothes I ordered beforehand were SD13 so all of his pants are a bit short on him if he sits down and he looks kind of dorky.

There was one time I was also changing him and he decided to flip down and smack his face off of my dresser, so now he has a chip on his (very blushed) cheek. I fixed it up a bit, but it's still not 100% covered.

Overall, he's been a bit of an adventure, but I love my moody baby and I know he's warming up to me. He's was my first BJD, so he's kind of a learning curve as well, which is what I'm assuming is the reason for most of the aesthetic mishaps that have happened so far.

    12. A follow up would be great VampireAngel13 ! XD

Oh my gosh Lulu, I think that tale beats mine hands down! I guess we can't give up on our kids no matter how much we don't like them sometimes. :D

Gah! I can't even think about gluing eyelashesUenna!

    13. My troublesome one used to be Kirlll, my MiniFee Ruth. My...fourth doll I think, purchased on a whim because he was pretty. He's the one that one loved to pose and photograph, but the one that one actually hated trying to pose. Breathe the wrong way over him and he would faceplant. Stand him alone and he's on the floor. Use another doll to support him, he'd drag them down with him. He was the cause of a case of dolly dominos at a meet - he dragged down the doll he was leaning against, who knocked over several other dolls on his way down. I still have him, adore him to bits, though I did say 'used to be', I sold his body to see if I can find something better. So far without success because of how slim the character is.

The crown of the troublesome one now I shall hand off to Fiyanggu - a Dollzone Cloud/Angel of Dream hybrid. His legs do not like staying in place if he is standing, so partway through a photo his knees will buckle and one will have to catch him. Not quite sure on how to fix it with this guy, on other dolls yes, but he is my one and only large size resin doll, I'm just not used to handling them ^^; Also has a wig that refuses to stay on, though I shall admit it is a rather strange wig and probably needs to be remade properly (rather than my attempt at it)

    14. Maybe for your Cloud hybrid, you could try wiring his legs.

    15. Oh dear, mine is definitely my Sugarble Helena (aka Hellena Handbasket). I got her second hand for her lovely purple wig and purple tinted faceup (honestly, if I'd seen the factory default version first, I'd have had no interest in the sculpt.) there was just something special about her from the outset.

I found out the "special" first meet I took her too. There aren't a lot of Sugarbles around, so the guy in our group was looking her over to see how she was sculpted and strung. At one point he flipped her over and flipped her skirts up to see what her hip joints looked like. She promptly kicked him in the nose.

A meet or two later, we were trying to get a group shot of all the dolls there. Bear in mind, Hellena is fairly Goth in both her clothing and general expression and attitude. During the process of shuffling everyone around to get them in the picture, she wound up next to a group of happy little Pukis. A moment later we heard a "thunk", and discover her arm has snapped out straight and backhanded the poor Pukis off their feet.

Despite my logical brain telling me "oh, she's just strung a bit tightly", I still find it highly suspicious that this only seems to happen if she feels she is being insulted, not treated with proper dignity, or forced to sit next to someone happy and/or overly cute...

    16. My dear problem child, both in doll and character, is my DOC Twin-B...Rosiel (the orange haired one, 3rd on my siggy). I love him dearly and would never dream of letting him go but he's the one who has given me problems (and his character is very rebel/problematic too so it fits XD).

First of all, his skin is a pain in the butt to match. He's had 3 bodies already and none of them worked, I got tired of it and settled down with a Doll-love body with a skin tone *similar* to his but still not perfect...will do for now. In the beginning I had bonding issues but I changed his face up and now he is perfect. I applied his eyebrows wrong but it looked good on him (actually, this is a mistake that turned out right :sweat). He fell down on the floor once and chipped his nose :...( I *fixed* it but I can't help to look at his nose and see some damage every time I look at him...oh and he is the only one whose MSC gets chipped and messy so I have to wash it, redo it and string his body constantly.

And lastly, his new body is the MOST difficult thing to string!!!! I have strung all my dolls, even the SD ones, and none of them were a nightmare like this one!!! :pout: I almost broke my finger the last time I tried to string it and gave up...I left the body there in pieces and now my Rosiel is bodiless...waiting for his owner to man up and put him together once and for all.

Then I have another doll who gave me many troubles but that was a bonding problem and an inability to find his character and inspiration...so I sold the body and turned the head into a practice head but I would never do that to my Rosiel because he's part of my family and I love him to bits =)

    17. My own problem child is my Withdoll Mai... Now, he has quite a bit of a history of problems quite a while before his ordering either. My friend and I had wante a pair of twins shelled as Mai and Nei ever since they had been first released. When their numbers started running low we started panicking in a sense since there was no confirmation or anything that Withdoll would release them again at the time. (Withdoll has a habit of doing that, though not all their limited sculpts end up being released as basic).

So cue panic and a layaway plan with Withdoll. Normally, by the time we would be done with the layaway, given their current production times stated, they should be ready to ship as they said in their sales page that they start the dolls when they receive the first payment. Three months later we're done with the layaway but our order is nowhere near completion because we're informed by the company that they had changed their policy at some time but never updated the post to reflect that. So two months later our dolls were just beginning production and we're set on another monthly wait.

Eventually the thirty days come... and pass, without any news regarding our order at which point I had to contact the company again only to be told that our order is almost ready and will be shipped next week. Every week, for the following two months! Towards the end of that dreadful wait I had began wondering what would we do if the company never shipped our orders. Don't get me wrong, I've waited five months before, on occasion I've waited up to a year for an order, I just don't like "unplanned" waiting. When a company says "40 days processing time" and that they start on the doll the day they receive layaway and even the waiting room at the time reflects that, I don't expect waiting three months extra for my doll.

So they finally arrive and give me a heart attack when they enter the country because they appear stuck in customs for three days, even though they were eventually released without extra charges. They take another week until they finally come home, I open them and they're as fine as I had expected them to be, both my boy and my friend's in perfect condition. And I'd be perfectly happy if it wasn't for what followed up.

For one, the fabled Withdoll posing right out of the box that I had witnessed time and time again in box opening failed us completely. The weird hip joint of our guys caused them to fall backwards any time they were stood up even without being disturbed at all whatsoever. Their arms were ridiculously loose too. And not only that, his wig didn't look good on him (nor has any other wig I've tried on him since, over ten wigs now) even though the color was perfect! (a limited leeke color that who knows when it will be rereleased...) and no clothes fit or even look good on him. His eyes are also a disaster, no color or style fits him either, and I have solved very little to no problems of all that still.

And lets not talk about his faceup that despite being very pretty and flattering I can't help but feel is a little off in some sense I can't describe. It's probably just a wig/eye problem but I don't even know where to start with fixing these...

    18. I was kind of angry about it at first but luckily I had been watching Faceup Stories religiously while waiting for him to arrive so I actually had a pretty good idea of how to apply them! :sweat Still, it was an added step that I would have rather not had to do.

    19. Well, I only have 2 dolls... but my Yara from Asleep Eidolon had never pleased me.
When she arrived, I noticed her skin tone was really yellow and looking horrible. Her mouth also looked a bit uneven.

I tried selling her, but my mum told me to keep her. (That was 7 years ago)

    20. My problem child is my SwD Yui, Annabel Lee. She will not stand no matter what! I've restrung her, added kips, wired her, the works and still she just flops back down to sitting suwariko (sp?) style. She's a sleepy little thing so I don't mind too much, but still! I'll never part with her though. She can't stand but she's super cuddly and I love her to bits :)
