Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. Types of sculpting you have a soft spot for?

Jul 4, 2022

    1. Anyone else have something like this? Like, no matter the company, doll size, etc., if the sculpt has one or two aspects (maybe a specific facial feature like a nose shape or a engineering feature like magnetic hands) you're a sucker for, you just can't help but be a little interested in the doll even if you wouldn't have been otherwise. Maybe you can't get enough of narrower eyes, or wider eyes, or big grins, or deep scowls, all kinds of different things.

I'm specifically like this with beautifully sculpted gestural hands LOL. When I was a kid who just found out about BJDs, I was initially only interested in jointed hands. But now, as an adult who can actually buy BJDs now, I've found over time I've really come to love static hand sculpts. Depending on how they're posed, they can be so vesatile!! I remember seeing Dollzone's 68cm boy hands and being like "WOW" because the pose was so nice, simultaneously expressive and neutral~

I also love me an open-mouthed head with separate mouth pieces for teeth, I just think its a genius idea. Easier to paint, plus you can get a little creative and mod the pieces to have sharp or flat teeth, etc., I think it's so neat!!

What are your sculpt weaknesses, if you have any?

    2. I love sculpts with sleepy or closed eyes, they make any face look so dreamy!

    3. I love love love sculpts with pouty lips and a little bit of tooth showing. Like Village Doll's Lola sculpt. It's funny, because when I first got into the hobby, I was very anti-tooth, lol! I also love dolls with big doe eyes and full cheeks. It's so cute!

    4. I love sculpts with teeth showing, especially vampire teeth! I also have a massive soft spot for sculpts with strung fantasy parts, the amount of designing that goes on those is nothing short of mind-blowing to me :o

    5. The first thing I can think of is thin, lanky bodies. I especially love Doll Chateau and Dream Valley for that. Speaking of those companies, I also love various fantasy sculpts, although I only have one on the way so far lol.
Other than that I’d say pouty lips, pointy elf ears and vampire teeth!

    6. My main soft spot is big babies, chunky non-mature 1/4 (or bigger if there was a widely used term for them). For faces I like button noses and heart shaped lips. Or completely opposite of that I love me a good grumpy face with expressive eyebrows. Also droopy elf ears and anthro dolls. >u<

    7. I love sculpts with very large eyes and bigger lips, which is why I'm most often in love with Volks and Luts dolls. If a 1/3 sculpt takes eyes smaller than 18mm I'm generally not interested hah.

    8. 1. Lightly-parted lips. I keep being like "no, it makes them look air-headed" and then see a new sculpt that I really want and lo-and-behold, it's got lightly-parted lips too...

      2. Wide eyes, but this isn't a surprise. All of my main characters I always draw with wide eyes, haha (in fact I usually keep drawing them wider and wider like the story behind Powergirl's "assets", and then inevitably have to reign it in because at some point, they've eaten up half of the character's face...)

      3. Newer obsession - I love intentionally chonky ankles and hands (like Kinoko Juice, and the newer 1/4 anime dolls). I think it makes the doll look super cute. Wider hips are cute too, but I find that sometimes this gets pushed to ridiculous proportions and I'm... less fond of that.

      4. ...On the flipside, I also adore elegant, highly realistic see-all-the-bone-and-vascular-structure-underneath body sculpting (but for some reason... don't quite like that in the doll heads?).

    9. I agree!! Beautifully sculpted hands are so satisfying to look at. And open mouth heads allows so much creativity!

Come to think of it, my collection of dolls does show a lot of my personal preference.

      For heads:
      - Fuller cheeks / defined jawline (I just really love the way they look from sideview!)
      - The volume under eyes (idk how to describe it, makes the eyes more expressive)
      - Fuller lips (so much fun doing faceups on them!)

      For body:
      - Hands with well done structure, as previously mentioned.
      - Joints that follow the 'natural' looking curve when posing.
      - Legs with muscles & bones sculpted (pretty silhouette w/ or w/o clothing!)

    10. I have a total weakness for dolls showing their teeth :XD:

    11. Several things!

-Big/wide noses. So many sculpts have thin or tiny noses, but a more realistic nose gets me every time!

-Extremely thin 1/3 bodies. If I can see the bone structure, I love it! For male or female.

-But also, plus size bodies in 1/3 scale! There aren’t many and I haven’t found any guys, but I love the girls I’ve found. I think I just like body diversity more than standard BJD body types.

    12. I like "old school", stylized sculpts better than realistic ones.

I don't necessarily stick to dolls that look like a 3D manga character (Although I do have a couple of those in the crew-)... I'm fine with sculpts that are anywhere on the stylization scale from classic Volks and CP/Delfs to almost-but-not-really-realistic types like IpleHouse... But I'm just not a fan of hyper-realism with textured skin face-ups and tiny eyes and tiny heads and all that.

I guess it comes down to wanting my dolls to look... well, like dolls.
I don't want a collection of too-"real" Miniature People.

    13. I’m a sucker for elven ears and cloven feet.

    14. I like natural :3 lips very much.
Nearly all of my dolls have it one way or another. Some more pronounced, some more subtle. I don't like dolls with thin lips, grim :I expressions or the overly wide smiles. But if they have that subtle smile going on with somewhat full lips, I'm all in.

I also love it when the nose has a slight bump in the middle of its back, and the tip is then slightly perking up.
Like Soom Heliot's nose, or Iplehouse Arvid (who also has a very pronounced :3 mouth).

    15. I'm a complete sucker for smirks. I wish even more dolls had them.

And also, well-sculpted little teeth. Not so much wide grins, but subtle teeth or vampire fangs are super cute.

    16. I love pouty, full lips and sculpts that look very stern or sad (tugs at my heartstrings!). Also, broader shoulders for both male and female sculpts.

    17. I'm attracted to things that are stylized, often to the point of being anatomically inaccurate, for the sake of expressiveness, unique silhouette and visual flow! For example slightly hyperextended fingers, large hands/ankles/feet, unnaturally curvy calves, disproportionately large hips, unnaturally sharp facial features.

And I'm actually really drawn to dolls that have less attention to detail and more attention to overall impact/design. I don't care about (or actively dislike) when I can see every vein and tendon and muscle under the skin. I prefer a unique and pleasing shape with minimal detail! I think a perfect example of this is Dust of Dolls- their bodies are generally very simple, but the shapes of the parts flow into each other perfectly.

I also really like wide mouths, whether they're smiling or frowning or neutral.

    18. Thick hips/thighs and big lips.

    19. Smiley - with teeth showing is a bonus.

    20. I’m so with you on this…the sweet, simple aesthetic of Luts, Volks and PeaksWoods. I also enjoy the elegant and lithe Doll Chateau bodies as well, especially the ones with the extra joints. My BJDs are my escape from the stresses of the real world, and while I very much enjoy seeing the more realistic sculpts in the collections of others, I just don’t want it in my own. I’ve worked very hard to carefully craft a beautiful fantasy world of my imagination, and I don’t want any of that pesky reality creeping in!;)
