1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Upgrade a doll?

Oct 20, 2025 at 4:30 PM

    1. I have one doll that I am on edge to "upgrade".

She is my first BJD and I love everything about her. But got yellowed a lot over years and has small scuffs on nose from accident. The same sculpt is now available in UV resistant resin and better ankle joint.

As much as I adore my doll, I am not attached to the level I cannot let go of her. But I also don't know if I can sell her to minimize financial loss. Maybe I switch just head and hands since she basically wears modestly. I really don't know what's best to do.

Has anyone had similar experience with older dolls? What did you do?

    2. You could try to get her a de-yellowing? Either doing it yourself or from a faceup artist:) I don't have any yellowed dolls, but I've seen others have good results!

    3. I upgraded my old yellow and single jointed unoa hybrid by buying a new body and fresh faceplates and assembling the same doll "again". While it was super fun to have a well-posing body and new faceplates I ended up selling the doll not too much time later, somehow the upgraded version just didn't have the charm of the older version any more, even though in theory all parts were "better". I think it was as if the soul of it was lost in the process for me, and have now learned that if I start yearning for an upgrade, it just means the doll has to go as a same-looking doll will not be the same thing for me. Turns out I fall in love with the doll and not the sculpt!

But all collectors are different of course! I would make a thorough list of pros and cons and see which side outweighs the other. If your only con would be that selling the old doll won't make enough money back, but you would swap it out in a heartbeat otherwise, I would consider making the extra money in some other way instead (doing faceups, selling something else, saving up longer etc) so it doesn't feel like a dealbreaking loss.

In any case, only you can know what to really do! If I was in your position, I would keep the old doll because it is that specific doll - but if you know this attachment is not an issue for you, you might have a very different conclusion. Good luck!

    4. @cobaltconduct I'm still debating! I do not, or at least I claim not to, have attachment issue but the sole reason she is still here is because she is holding special place in my heart. So there is a possibility I wouldn't bond to the brand new one as much as my banana girl. I love the sculpt itself so much I could just have same doll in all skin colour available if money wasn't issue. lol
Thank you for sharing insight though! I hadn't think whether I would love the doll as much if I "upgraded". I'll definitely put more though on that question!

    5. I have reshelled or upgraded several dolls! And almost never regret it. Though I am too attached to my first doll and just cannot let him go. I temporarily reshelled him in a larger scale (he's 1/4 and I prefer 1/3), but ended up selling the new version and still have the original. I regret not keeping my second doll.

But my two current favorites have been reshelled with no regrets! Got them both better bodies, and reshelled one in a different skin tone. I love them more now!

    6. This also happened to me several times before I learned my lesson.

I also tried keeping a head and just changing out the body, long ago, but the hybriding didn't work out and it felt dissonant after having the doll on a different body for many years. Another failure.

What has been more successful for me is to essentially let go of earlier dolls and make new generations or characters that use pieces of the things that I loved in new ways while keeping essentials of what I liked about those original dolls.
