Warm Bodies

Feb 14, 2010

    1. So this is an odd thing, so I just thought I'd throw it out there. I do occasionally have one of my dolls sit on my lap while I'm watching a movie, or at work if I'm sitting and pricing things. I have a lot (and I mean a lot) of cats, and I'm very much accustomed to feeling the that weight accompanied by heat. I noticed it most in this especially cold winter here in California (it was 42 outside -- don't laugh, that's really really cold for us locals) and the feel of that litle body being cold when I hug him is a little... wrong.

Does anyone else feel this way, or is it just me? If one of the BJD companies came out with a "doll warmer" that you could sit your dollie in for a few minutes would you use one? I know that certain materials retain body heat better than others, and I would love for there to be and additive to resin to make it warm to the touch!

      Thoughts? Feelings?

    2. Interesting topic! I dont think I would ever purchase a "doll warmer," but I think it is cool to make my dolls seem as realistic as possible in some ways and more human (their detail and "aliveness" is what drew me to them in the first place). So, if there was something like an additive to resin that would constantly make them warm I think it would be amazing and would definitely want it.

    3. I love the cool smooth feel of resin. I like to sit with a doll in my lap in the evening as well, but love that they are cool to the touch. It's 12 degrees here right now, by the way! I'm a bit hot blooded though, and am rarely ever cold (unless I'm outside when it's 12 degrees).

    4. I would love for my dolls to be warm! I really wish there was a way to make them radiate heat, I think it would be a great idea.
Not sure if I would buy a doll warmer, but an additive to the resin.. That would be amazing!

    5. XD; I generally don't have a problem with this, as I find resin actually retains heat really well. I like sitting with my dollies on my lap too, so it doesn't take long for my heat to warm them up.

But that said, if there was a way to keep that heat longer, and I wasn't worried about it hurting them, yes, I'd absolutely love it. :D

    6. Doesn't heat yellow resin? This could be a bad combination...

    7. I thought it was UV rays from sunlight that yellow resin...? Not sure about that.

    8. Since heat (like light) is bad for resin - no, I would definitely NOT want any kind of "doll warmer" or "warm doll" option. Not only can heat make the resin warp, and over time weaken it, but it can also cause the pigments that color the resin to destabilize and change.

    9. This. Plus, it'd kind of annoy me... I like my warm cuddlers to either be a purring cat or my boyfriend.

    10. There is, it's called your body heat! Resin warms up beautifully just from your contact and as others have said, anything artificially generating that heat is going to cause a world of problems with the resin anyway...so...just hug till warm?

    11. I don't think I'd ever purchase a "doll warmer" or anything of sorts, it would be kind of weird if they were warm, being dolls..

    12. Both heat and UV rays can yellow resin quicker, to end that mystery, haha.

I always though that these dolls felt rather realistic to the touch. The first time I held one of these dolls, I remember thinking how real and warm they seemed in comparison to every other doll I've ever touched. Resin is a poor conductor of heat, so even when they're away from a heat source, they retain a bit of warmth. :)

    13. Wouldn't want it. It's just too weird. imo

    14. I do agree with blackmoral.. i love them as they are.. and when you hug them and they feel like they are dolls isn´t that great because you love them as dolls ?
I mean if their bodies were warm it would confuse me i guess..it would be the same as if my cat where suddenly cold and walking around..

    15. I agree with this! I'm not particularly bothered when the doll is cold or satisfied when the doll is warm, but I do notice that the temperature can change based on how much she's been handled. When my doll has been leaning against my husband for a while she's very warm. So if you want a warm doll, either "hug 'til warm" or snuggle it up to someone else you know who is warm and won't accidentally crush/damage/etc. it! n_~

    16. I like the feeling of cold smooth surfaces. XD I don't like changing the dolls' temperatures frequently either. However, I do know what you mean. When I got my first doll and I held him it was cold and he felt so weird to me. I was also comparing him to a cat and the weight was there, thanks to the way I strung him he seemed to move on his own, and I could feel limbs and other things that made him seem more "alive" than other inanimate objects yet he was very cold. For a few days it felt strange to me, but now I am used to it.

    17. I'm used to my MSD being regular temperature, but my SD usually is cold. It's been a very cold winter this year, so perhaps is that why. I'm just used to that when I take my dolls away from their shelft, they're usually pretty cold.

    18. I'd find picking up my doll to find it warm creepy, kind of when one sits in a chair someone recently vacated and it's still creepy-warm. That said, I don't really cuddle my dolls either, I might sit one on my lap occasionally, but I don't really cuddle them in my arms as such.

    19. I'm not sure, I think it would be kind of comforting, too, to have a warm doll. I have chihuahuas that love to snuggle, and that wamth is soothing. I can completely see how it could go to uncanny valley with some people, but I would like that, especially n this super cold winter. (It's currently about 7 degrees F outside!)

Though, it would probably have to be a different material than the resins our doll's are cast in. Maybe a type of vinyl or a different kind of plastic all together?

    20. Hmm with something that's more smooth and hard surfaced, I can expect it to be either cool or room temp. As much as I would think a warm doll is nice, I would consider long term issues with that. But if it hold heat nice enough it's no biggie to me ^^.
