What attracts you to a doll?

Nov 8, 2012

    1. Even though I've been a fan for years, it seems every new week brings me a new brand of dolls. The variety and uniqueness is astonishing, and makes me wonder: What attracts you to a doll? Is there a particular type of facial features, poseability options, or size that makes you want a certain doll more than others?

      Just curious. :)

    2. It would definitely be the facial features for me. Proportions play a part in it too.

    3. usually their face, I like big eyes and smallish noses and lips
but their size also attracts me, I like either really big or small, MSDs (while bigger than I expected them to be) are an odd size that I could never see myself owning
poseability isn't as important to me but if they can sit with their knees turned out (like the suwarriko bodies) that is nice
their body style is also important to me, I don't really like the mature bodies so if a doll has a beautiful head sculpt but they come on a mature/realistic body I probably won't buy it

    4. Their facial expressions and pose-ability have a lot to do on whether or not I will purchase the doll.

I like a doll that can portray many different emotions depending on the angle at which you take the picture. I've never been one to be too keen on the dolls that pout or frown, and I don't like overly smiley doll either. Somewhere in between, a smirk, tickles my fancy.

While pose-ability for me is important, I won't solely base my purchase on it. It's just a plus if they can handle all sorts of positions. The greatest part about this hobby for me is getting to pose them in human-like stances.

    5. The face for me. I really love cute, not so realistic faces with big eyes.
The body is a big part for me as well, it needs to be well proportioned and poseable. I like to play with my dolls afterall ;)

    6. Definitely is their face first and then is their size. I dont like big doll. I like smaller size doll cause they are cuter ^^

    7. Uniqueness! Of course I like pretty dolls, but I love them if they look really unusual, or weird, or different. They don't have to be totally off the wall, but just different enough--a bigger nose than average, an interesting jawline, and yeah, wild fantasy parts do it for me. I really, really want a DC Alberta, so that should tell you something.

    8. Thanks for all the replies! It seems like cuter faces tend to be the trend. Personally, I prefer dolls than are cute, but a little more realistic than average. Unoa is my particular favorite, because they have so much expression.

_geist_, same here! Alberta is crazy beautiful. I have DZ Una on my wishlist, too. There's something about weird ears and limbs that I just can't resist. :)

    9. Probably the facial, too. But it really don't have to be any type of specific facial. But there's one thing about if I want to buy it or not. Is the first impression. If at the first time I see the pictures and I have a shocking feelings, it means I'll probably buy it. But so far, only 5 dolls have accomplish that. :P

    10. Noses... Although basically what attracts me to a sculpt is if they fit a character I have in mind and want to get in doll form. xD; Noses are still pretty important to me though... I find that if I dislike the nose I can't really enjoy a doll's face...

    11. Their smiling face and child body. Love the smiling kids.

    12. Lots of different things for different dolls, but the make-of-break deal for any doll I'm looking at is the profile view of the nose. It's not so much that there's a particular nose shape I'm attracted to; rather, I dislike when a doll's nose turns way upwards at the tip. It could be a fantastic sculpt from the front but if the nose goes up I strike it off my potential wishlist. That's what happened with the DOD Sha; I was in love for all of 5 minutes until I saw how his nose looked from the side.

Lips are important but not so much because a faceup can subtly change the look of the mouth and the eyes can always be modified. But the nose? It's all about the nose.

    13. Face and body. I like faces on the more realistic side OR quirky cute. Even though my dolls are always clothed, if I can't stand how a doll looks unclothed it very likely won't make it home, no matter how perfect the face is.

    14. I seem to like dolls that have stylized features as well as those that can pose well.

    15. Elements of the face, for sure. for me, I specifically am attracted to eye shape and full lips. I think this is why most Volks dolls don't grab me. They tend to have forgettable lips. BUT, there are a few SD16 and SD17 sculpts out there I really did like because of the lips XD. After those, I'm extremely picky about posability and the aesthetics of their joints, so the body is a deal maker or breaker for me.

    16. Jerk smirks. And smug mugs.

      /brick'd

    17. the right shaped face and just overall look, unfortunately 99% of dolls dont appeal to me...i am very picky, lol

    18. The face is what first attracts me. I try to visualize what they would look like with different eyes, hair, face up etc...I also have character plans and would like them to fit these as best as possible. I only like the mature boys so next it's what does their body look like? Beautifully toned (think Ringdoll grown) appeals to me. The color of the resin is also important. I don't like pink skin too pink but find white can be to pale. I like a pale shade of normal pink (such as Doll-love have). Fussy huh? I still manage to like many more than i can afford.

    19. The facial features are a big deal clincher for me. They could have the most amazing sculpted body, but if the face isn't right, it instantly turns me off from purchasing the doll.

    20. The ones I like most have enormous eyes, so I guess that's what I prefer.
