What do y'all go for when choosing wig sizes?

Nov 19, 2024

    1. A lot of the wigs I'm looking at don't match the size of the bjd doll, like it'll have an option of 14-14.5cm and then 16-17cm, but my doll's head size is 15cm.

Do you guys generally size up in this case? Or go for the size that's smaller? I can see the pros and cons for both: like if you buy too big, it'll look awkward no matter what, but you still have leeway to at least mod to make it smaller, compared to buying too small and it just not fitting no matter what but on the off chance it does fit it would be proportional.

    2. Are you sure it's just not in stock? I suppose I'd go for larger, if there was no other option. I'd probably just find another wig though.

    3. Yeah, i dont think its a stock issue. The sizes are labelled "1/6: 16-17cm" and then "1/8: 14-14.5cm" so its just awkward cuz my doll head is right in between. It just sucks because the kind/style of wig im looking for is already hard to find :(

    4. As the owner of many Alans, most of which are between wig sizes despite different scales... I buy both and pray one fits if I straight can't find the right style elsewhere. Larger tends to be bulkier than on the model dolls but can be shrunk with a couple of stitches if it's okay, and smaller sometimes fits if it's stretchy or with a little snip to the elastic in the back. Good luck! It's definitely hard sizing for some heads.

    5. I ended up doing exactly that! I guess I can always just return the one that doesnt fit as well, but it is a hassle... sigh. *_*

    6. I would go smaller if the cap is stretchy since I have wigs meant for 1/8 that fit a few of my 1/6 dolls.

    7. That's also a good point. Though it would be a gamble since I dont know how stretchy the cap is so it could just be too stiff if I buy small.

    8. Yeah, that's why I get both. I've had ones that are stretchy, but just not quite stretchy enough. And I've had ones that are stretchy enough. I'd rather have the hassle of returning one later than realize I need the other and now it's out of stock when I'm trying to find a rare style.

    9. If you take the head/wig off a lot to change clothes or eyes, I would definitely go with the bigger one to make that easier. Struggling a too-small wig on is too much work to do it twice imo :abambi:

I'd also suggest getting both sizes if you can return one, though - measurements listed are not always fully accurate so you may have more leeway than expected.

    10. Actually it depends on how the wigs are made. If they are sewed to a stretchy ones, no problem for the smaller. If they are built on the basis of non stretchy materials, it's better to opt for larger size, since ears may not fit, unless you are willing to cut a little part of the wig.

Volks offers accessories like tissue head cap (for wigs that are too large) and sticker (for tight wigs), highly recommended

    11. one of my dolls is on the small head end for 1/4 scale so most wigs are too big, and personally i haven't had much issue with anything looking too big or bulky. to be fair though i don't go for an extremely natural look and some wigs definitely have a "raised off the forehead" look, but those specific wigs in question have a faux skin cap in them (which i despise!!!) i always lean on the side of bigger and use a silicon cap to assist in any gapping issues

    12. I'd go for bigger and probably keep it on by adding hats/goggles/headbands (because I'm too lazy to do the sensible thing and use velcro or head caps or whatever more organised doll owners do. And because hats are cute ) I have one that's stretchy and super snug on the doll I wanted it for, and trying to get that wig on and position it correctly makes me rage like nothing else :sweat

    13. Yeah, I think it's because the doll I'm trying to work with is already a 1/6 scale doll, that anything that would look chunky or too big would look extra odd in my mind. With bigger dolls, i think one might have a litttllee bit more leeway?

Haha I heard from someone that even just looking wrong at the doll with a tight wig will make it pop off!

    14. yes! You move one strand of hair to get it out of their face and the whole wig comes off and you have to start all over again. NIGHTMARE.

    15. Tight wigs are the absolute bane of my existence, so I always prefer sizing up if I have to. A silicone or cloth cap or even some eye putty strategically placed under the wig will help any slipping and sliding. I have a Pullip wig on a smaller sized head that way.

    16. Most of my dolls are Volks girls and therefore melonheads, so I err on the 9-10 size side out of caution.
I'm tempted to add 30 silicon pitatto rings to my next Volks order because that's the perfect wig movement stopper for me: easier to get on than a full half-sphere silicon cap and helps keep my older no-magnet heads closed tight
