What Dolly Rules Do You Set For Yourself?

Jan 23, 2011

    1. I've said this once or twice before on DoA: I have my own rule that I won't mix immature MSDs with mature MSDs because I don't find the look of both of them mixed together appealing (I guess I'm one of those "height correlates to age" people). I wondered if I was the only one who did anything kind of quirky within the hobby.

Do you do something that some might think is odd, quirky, or whatever?

What is it, and why do you do it?

Do you follow your rules, or have you broken them. If you've broken them, what did it for you?

    2. Hmm. I might have some of these.

I have a thing about keeping the number of male and female dolls equal.

Also, I like to keep all the eye and hair colors natural. But for some reason more and more of my dolls are winding up with purple eyes. :doh

    3. I actually refuse to have immature-looking dolls at all. This isn't because I don't like the molds or anything, and a lot of them are really cute. I either buy dolls for my characters or make up characters for my dolls, and a lot (if not all) of their stories are very dark. Which means that I don't like having younger characters, if I can get away with it.

      Sometimes, though, I just have to have a tiny. >.>;;

    4. I like older boys and younger girls. So MSD and above, I definetely prefer male dolls, but Yo-SD etc. girls all the way (though boys are cute too).

Probably something to do with the fact that I love playing dress-up, princess etc. with little girls, but much prefer the company of people who share my interests in games, computing and anime (mostly men.) when they're closer to my age. Also, it's probably something to do with my really high appreciation of the male form and the fact that I find the female form not as visually appealing.

    5. For me, it's "NO CUTE". I love cute, I squee over cute. I roll on the floor spewing existential goo over cute. But I cannot live with it in real life. So I don't participate much in this hobby anymore!
However, there's much to be said for vicarious living!
      Cute is just much more at home on my monitor. ^^;;

    6. If my characters are all part of the same 'group', then I will only buy dolls for those characters from the same company. Like my Hamlet cast - I'm only buying DoD sculpts. My Peter Pan group is only coming from CustomHouse (or the marketplace, these days >>). It's something I'm really picky about.

Another thing is that I will not buy clothes for my Peter Pan group, but on the flip side, I will not make clothes for my Hamlet group. I will be doing all the faceups for my Hamlet group myself, but I will only use company default faceups with my Peter Pan group.

I'm. . .just a touch anal about these things. Just a touch.

    7. I'm not sure if its weird or not, but I don't touch other people's dolls. o.0
At doll meets, all it really takes is just asking to see the doll, but I can't even do that. Sometimes people will offer to let me hold their doll and I'll do it for a very short period of time.

Maybe I just can't trust myself that I won't accidentally mess the BJD up even though I know not to handle them less carefully than my own dolls. And I hold my own dolls very gingerly. xD I hope to get out of this conservative behavior as I do often wonder about the weight and poseability of different dolls and their companies.

    8. My rule is that my doll money cannot come from my allowance. >_> Other than that, I'm fairly flexible.

    9. Not really a 'rule', but I get super nervous around other peoples' dolls! :o I've briefly handled them, or held them for someone who had to use their hands momentarily, but I mostly stick to my own at meets. I'll probably get over it with time, but when everyone else is handling everyone's dolls, I feel silly for being so shy :sweat Maybe it's because I handle my dolls so much... I touch their faces, pull them over to me by the arm... I guess I'm afraid I'll absent-mindedly do that to someone else's doll?

    10. ravendolls, I hear you on the cute. I can't have it living here in abundance. I might let myself have one cute sink (like a heat sink, just for sparkles, pink, hearts, and enormous eyes) in the house some day, but that'd be it.

I break a lot of my rules for myself over time, but I've had a lot of them:
"I am ONLY going to get one!" -- Yeah, that sorta got blown to bits when I ordered the first... two. Together. ;) I blame my mother, who said, "You can't just get one. If you get one, she'd be lonely," when I was trying to decide between those two.
"Just ONE SIZE." -- This is now, "I will not add more than one size category per year." It erodes more than it breaks.
"Just girls!" -- ...but he was just as pretty as they were!

    11. I can't buy a doll unless I can pay in full DX Once I start the layaway train I know I will be broke for the rest of my life... PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE :sobs:

      It's actually been helping though... Now I have to force myself to think about the doll I am buying instead of impulse buys which I am notorious for ^^;

    12. - All my dolls names start with another letter (so no two dollies whose name start with an "A" for instance).
      - Non of my dolls have exact the same hair of eyecolor and I'm trying to limit similar colors or similar combinations (like one doll with dark green eyes and light blonde hair and one doll with light geen eyes and dark blonde hair).
      - Twins are excluded from these rules.

Heh, I don't even know where these rules come from really :sweat but I live by them :). It's getting harder and harder now my dollie family is expanding though, I haven't broken them yet but in my future plans and wishlist I'm breaking the doll names rule.

Oh and I also had the rule: no two dollies on order together, EVER. But limiteds came, layaway creeped in, and that rule's now broken ;)

    13. Uhm..... Lesseee......

"Only ONE" - I think we all start like that. Pft! ^w^ I ordered my DZ mini and within a week was buying my friend's RS mini from her because I couldn't relax. It distracted me from being obsessive.

"Nothing bigger than MSD size" - >-> *eyes her savings and her dollie list* Uhm... Yes, we see how long that lasted. XD

"NO TINIES. EVAR." - So far so good, I just can't own something that small. It's.... too small. I'd loose it, or break it, or my chihuahua would eat it and need a stomach pump or something. No, so far we're safe.

"No elf ears" - *eyes Sprite* ....... -_-; Will power, I do not have it.

    14. Do you do something that some might think is odd, or quirky, or whatever?
Well, I'm another one who breaks her own rules. Hrm, I don't like eyelashes on a doll . . . now I must have upper eyelashes on a doll. Can't see what the fuss is over urethane eyes . . . now all of my crew will have urethane eyes. Heat resistant/Leeke limited/fancy wigs, pssh . . . now I've got more heat resistant than anything else :sweat.

I used to try to keep the sizes relative to their ages, but it got too difficult. Now they only have to be proportional within their own storylines.

What is it, and why do you do it?
My quirky thing is probably paying attention to who is near whom. I once put a blindfold on a doll while comparing him to a floating head, because it would upset him to see his blank, bodiless master :sweat. And the thing is, I DON'T believe they have souls or anything . . .

A couple of my resin rugrats have their own toys that they keep on them at all times, too.

Why? Well, probably love of my own created characters for one, and the fun of pretending. Also, I can feel bad about some pretty silly things. Like I'll feel guilty for eating animal-shaped gummies or chocolates . . .

I also look for excuses to get products from different companies. For example, I've now ordered urethane eyes from most companies that make them.

    15. Thinking how some people don't like having cute IRL, I think I'm the opposite. I like adorable, head-exploding cuteness in my life...however, I like goth/punk in small forms, but not around me IRL, since they have the tendency to depress me (and in doll form, there'd be too many staining headaches. And even then, I tend to want it in "small" doses.

And I forgot to say: after seeing some adorable mature MSDs, I'm willing to bend the rules for them if - and ONLY if - the face looks like it could substitute for an immature MSD face. (You know how some mature MSDs have child-like faces?) And if the boobs aren't extreme, I may be willing to chalk it up to developmental differences between my dolls, or that one doll's character is going through puberty and may be a little older, while another one might not be. I think it also would work well because you sometimes can't find answers to "Does x head fit with y body?"

But still, I don't want an overtly, overall mature MSD mixed in. It would look like I had a very small adult among kids, lol!

    16. Hmm, let's see.

1.) All dolls must look okay next to my very first doll. If they fail that test, I will have to let them move on (has only happened once so far).
2.) All MSDs should be slim minis unless they are fantasy creatures and therefore age more slowly - hey, I needed to make adjustments to that rule and that is the only way I could justify buying a limited. ^^
      3.) No SDs ever.
4.) No more odd sizes. The sizes I have so far are 12cm, 26cm, 35cm and 42-44cm. That's enough different sizes. Nothing more in between, because my dolls share clothes sometimes. So unless it's an animal (Pipos etc) and doesn't need clothes, I won't buy another size anywhere in between.
5.) For some reason ever since my first doll, I've never bought a doll without having a back story and character first. They all fit into my story line and then I set out and try to find a doll that represents that character best. (Not really a rule, that's just how it has been with most of them.)
6.) Also, I don't let my dolls sit around naked too much. Not because I have something against naked dolls, I'm just cold a lot and I kinda feel bad for the resin minions when they don't have clothes on. :sweat Weird, I know...

I think that's about it. More than I thought there would be.

    17. 1. Must MUST MUST be able to pose with aesthetically pleasing bodies. I cannot and absolutely will not tolerate dolls that can't pose for nuts. Just being able to stand won't cut it.
      2. Eye size under 18mm.
      3. Head size within the 8~9 head bracket for SDs. I don't quite like dolls with big heads.
      4. One doll per size + gender. Eg 1 SD boy, 1 SD girl.
      5. No floating heads unless they are the alternate heads of a doll. (eg sleeping heads)

These are mostly just to keep my collection from growing, really. :sweat

    18. Yeah, that's what my rules are supposed to do, too:

      1. Slim SD girls ONLY (that way everybody can share clothes)

      2. Slim SD girls ONLY (that way everybody can share clothes)

      3. Slim SD girls ONLY (that way everybody can share clothes)

      - :doh -

    19. I don't think I've ever broken any of my rules. I never thought I would own a girl doll, but was not strictly against it. I just thought it would be unlikely to find one I really liked.

The way it stands now, a doll will not stay if it doesn't work for a particular character in my doll universe. The head must have a good resin match and be proportional on a Volks body if it's SD sized and a Bluefairy body if it is MSD size. They are the only two companies with bodies I like enough to keep around because they meet all of my body rules. Absolutely no three part torsos. I've only allowed double joints on my SD16 girl. Hate them on everything else. Hands need to be the two part kind with a separate ball for the wrist joint, not one fused piece. Bodies have to be able to stand like a rock and sit well. Thus, it makes my life so much easier to just go with Volks and Bluefairy all of the time.

    20. Lets see I'll name a few that I've had:

1.) Only 7, they all must be boys, and MSD. They all must be the 7 deadly sins.
      - That didn't really last, I bought a girl as my third doll, and a 72cm boy as my 4th >>; I now own 18 dolls? oops....>3>

      2.) No girls.
      - HA! -snort- I own more girls then boys at this point >>

3.) All my characters must be in the same story.
      - Well that didn't last long. The SD decided they wanted to be on their own themselves.

I can't really think of anything else to be honest. I'm not super strict with my rules, 'cause I know they're not going to last :sweat:sweat:sweat
