1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

What happens to the original sculpts?

Aug 30, 2010

    1. Call this an odd question, but it's just occurred to me - What happens to the master sculpts of each doll?

Do they have to be kept in some form to allow new moulds to be made when the old ones wear out, or are secondary moulds made from the resin copies? Are there shelves and shelves at Volks HQ dedicated to old heads? What about limiteds? Do Soom keep all the originals of the limiteds, or do they eventually end up in landfill along with the mis-cast parts? Is there a BJD museum somewhere with them all in glass cabinets, or are they de-strung and stacked in shoeboxes in a warehouse?

Beyond that, what do those or you who are sculptors do with your originals? I've not reached the casting stage yet, but I'm pretty certain that I'll keep my originals somewhere safe - After all, I've spent hours poring over them and get quite attached to my little clay lovelies!

But yes, any input on what happens to the originals is appreciated. And beyond that - Does anyone know what each company makes them from?

    2. This is just one of those questions where, as far as big companies are concerned, we don't really have an answer. I've actually stressed over this, myself, thinking about just how many miscasts companies must end up with. To keep their reputation impeccable, these imperfect dolls must never reach the market... which is sad, because if this community is anything to judge by, there'd be a BIG group of people who would jump at the chance to buy some slightly miscast dolls at a slightly discounted price! Myself included!

    3. I'm sure they destroy miscast pieces and keep the mastersculpt to make new molds when the old ones wear out. Miscast resin can possibly be recycled and used again for some purpose. If I had a doll company, I would destroy imperfect dolls to protect my reputation.

    4. Actually, the resin can't be reused -- it's one of the reasons tan dolls can be so expensive. There are a lot of miscasts with tan dolls, and therefore a lot of waste.
