What kind of bjd hair do you prefer? (deliberately vague)

Jan 16, 2015

    1. Do you prefer...
(sorry if some of the terminology is misleading or imprecise)

      store-bought wigs v. handmade wigs

synthetic wigs v. natural fiber wigs

stitched wigs v. glued wigs (fiber fastened with glue) v. hide wigs (with hair that comes pre-attached to the skin cap--as in tibetan mohair) v. fabric (fur) wigs v. yarn wigs v. sculpted hair (separate or molded to head)

wefts (relatively big chunks of hair attached together, usually sewn in a strip) v. lace wigs (what looks like individual hairs attached to the cap)

      painted hair v. wigs

soft cap v. hard cap wigs

long hair v. medium length hair (interpret this how you will) v. short hair v. no hair

anything else I could have contrasted but forgot

What kind of bjd hair do you currently own? Do your bjds share their hair with another?

    2. I prefer handmade, natural fiber (alpaca or mohair), glued wigs that have the appearance of individual hairs. Although making them is pretty labor-intensive, they can be styled, the fibers are in-scale to the doll in close-up pictures and they feel nice to the touch.

    3. I prefer buy it from the store (I tried to made wigs and was a total fail :pout:), I used to prefer synthetic hair but recently got a mohair wig and now I'm in love with it, is soo much fun and can comb in many ways, I'll definitely get more of them
also, at the begining, I prefer longs wigs, but it required more care and some times I don't have much time, so I turning my girl in a short hair style

    4. Oops! Hair length--I forgot. I'll add that too! Thanks!

    5. I prefer mohair wigs right now.

The only downside is that they look best with a hard cap for the hair styles I prefer (got three boys with 1920s hair) which means my dolls can't switch wigs with each other.

    6. I prefer synthetic. There is no longer a head in this house covered by a fur wig. Tried them twice, was not a fan. Avalon never really felt...Right until I found him that brown wig. What bugs me the most about the fur wig I got him at least was the fact that the seller I think didn't like me figuring out that I knew she messed up and gave my wig away, and gave me a wig two sizes two big. (I had to actually take it in twice) and no matter what I did the fur ALWAYS covered up those elf ears I fell in love with. And for me... It's just easier to take care of the synthetic wigs.

    7. I like all kinds of wigs. Here I've got faux fur, mohair, modacrylic, and other types of fiber. The hair I choose depends largely on the doll it's going to be used for. I like the look of faux fur on some of my dolls much better than I like fiber, and on others I prefer fiber for a more realistic look.

All of my wigs are either factory produced or hand-made by somebody else. I tried to make a wig once. It did not go well.

My current favourite wig brand for synthetic fiber wigs is Monique and my favourite faux fur wigmaker is Spite & Malice.

    8. Depends on the doll. Right now all but one of my crew have synthetic wigs (Leekeworld, Monique Gold and one from For My Doll.) I'm learning how to work with mohair and Tibetan lamb wigs, though - one of my PukiPukis has a lamb wig and it's perfect for her. I also have another one as a possible wig for an incoming doll. I've tried a couple of fake fur wigs but they just weren't right for my dolls. I've seen some nice ones, though.

I prefer long hair - for myself and my resin crew. :)

    9. It absolutely depends on the doll and what I'm trying to achieve with their individual look (I have synthetic mohair, real mohair both on skin and on a wig cap, Tibetan lambskin fur wigs, modacrylic, standard and heat-resisting fiber wigs, faux fur wigs, alpaca wigs, angora wigs, rabbit fur wigs, wigs made from the soft side of velcro, and more). That said, some of my favorite individual wigs, out of the ones that I have, are made from alpaca or angora (both hard cap and soft cap wigs), but these tend to cost a lot more (2x to 4x, sometimes even more if they're fancy) than the other kinds of wigs, and have much longer wait times for production.

    10. I prefer soft-cap wigs and the material really depends on the looks of the wig as well as the personality of the doll. I have a couple of dolls that just would not look good in mohair! Hair length is also determined by doll's personality. I prefer store bought but am not adverse to handmade if done well (which I've seen many here on DOA).

    11. For me it depends on the doll/character and the hairstyle they're meant to have i.e. Albert has Long hair which I couldn't find with a natural fibre (also he has squiggly curly ...uh would you call them bangs? - think sephiroth but curly-ish) so I went for kanekalon for him. All my others (with the exception of the DDdy who is currently stripped and being worked on) have Tibetan lambskin wigs one made by myself the others bought in.

    12. It really depends on the doll for me. I currently have 21 dolls and 2 more in the works, and they vary so much! Some look really cute in fur, others need long synthetic, some in bright colors, some natural.

But in general, my "go to" wigs are usually either a very high quality but not too thick synthetic fur wig, OR Monique synthetic mohair. I absolutely will not use real fur or skin wigs. Everything else, I'm willing to try. One of mine has a synthetic fiber wig, and it's good for her, but usually, I think they feel too stiff and "plastic-y" for my tastes. Synthetic mohair gets lots of flyaways, but it's okay, it feels natural to me.

It doesn't matter to me whether it's handmade or from a company, as long as it's high quality. I'm fine with wefting, as long as it's not visible.

I do not like hard cap wigs at all. I want wigs for a variety of sizes, not one specific head.

I usually don't like painted hair, but I have seen some "shaved" heads that look really good painted or flocked.

    13. When it comes to BJD's I tend to like synthetic wigs with colored streaks. It really depends upon the doll but I like vibrant wigs for my BJD's and will go out of my way to pick wigs that are more unusual vs solid colored wigs.

    14. I like all the wigs. I buy all the wigs, too. ;) I probably have more synthetic fiber and Tibetan lambskin than anything else. I especially like Monique synthetic mohair.

I've never had the opportunity of trying a hard cap wig.

I'm not a fan of sculpted or painted hair.

    15. My preferences go
No preference on hand made or shop purchased (even those from a shop are usually hand made), synthetic wigs, stitched onto a soft backing, if they are natural fibre wigs then they are to be attached to a synthetic backing and not be on hide, wefted or lace wigs I have no preference (I do have both), I will only go for wigs and will not have painted on hair, and the hair length depends on the character - however all of my dolls either have long hair or no hair, nothing in between...though some do have partially shaven hairstyles but their remaining hair is always long.

I do have three dolls total with faux fur hair, mostly because their hairstyles (all mohawks) would be more difficult to achieve on a 1/12 scale with other methods, but the rest all have synthetic fibre wigs. If my dolls are bald, that really does mean that they don't have any hair - I don't try and cover up their headcaps or paint stubble on their heads, they just don't have hair. Doesn't detract from them at all ^^

    16. At the moment my favorite wigs are handmade, soft cap, glued, natural fiber ones (or brushed-out yarn for the boys) - because I can make those myself and get any style I want, and they just look super natural. Mine are somewhere in-between wefts and lace: I don't pre-make wefts (tried that once with a sewn wig but it was much more of a mess than the glued ones) but I try to keep the layers thin and somewhat lace-y so the wig won't come out too poofy and dollish. I don't really have a preferred length, it depends on the doll and character.
I do still have some dolls in bought natural and synthetic fiber wigs because I had those kicking around and mohair/suri is a bit on the expensive side if you want the good stuff. But ultimately I hope I'll be able to make my own natural fiber wigs for all my dolls.

I love seeing painted (facial / body) hair on dolls but have yet to try that on one of mine. Don't have enough boys! I also like the "bald" look, as long as the headcap is camouflaged somehow. Sculpted hair isn't really my thing.

As for sharing wigs, I have the one and only Wig That Suits Everyone, and dolls have taken turns wearing it. But once they have their own proper wig they don't usually share.

    17. I like to buy my wigs and I have a mixture depending on the character but many of my boys have long hair. My favorite brand would be Monique. I also like and have Iplehouse, Luts and a few other fiber wigs as well as a couple of faux fur.

    18. I love handmade Suri alpaca/ mohair wigs the best (glued) . But synthetic fur sewn wigs are a close second. ive bnever Really liked painted hair, whether it be a painted ken doll or facial hair on dolls, i dont like it. it doesnt look natural to me. I have no preference on caps as long as the wig doesnt fall off haha and i really like long hair on dolls, but i also enjoy a cut pixie cut :D I only have one doll but i dont think i could share wigs... I feel like that would be just as strange as sharing my hair with my sister haha

    19. store-bought wigs v. handmade wigs
Handmade wigs, I think there's more attention to detail. But I guess are more prone to human error.
synthetic wigs v. natural fiber wigs
Depends on the look you're going for. The natural fiber looks very soft but slightly duller in sheen compared to my shinier synthetic.
stitched wigs v. glued wigs (fiber fastened with glue) v. hide wigs (with hair that comes pre-attached to the skin cap--as in tibetan mohair) v. fabric (fur) wigs v. yarn wigs v. sculpted hair (separate or molded to head)
I have a hide wig, and a glued/lace wig. My hide wig looks more natural at the scalp than my glued/lace wig imo. I don't really like the look of sculpted wigs looks reminiscent of a child's toy. I feel yarn wigs can be pulled off with certain faces/ character ideas, however brush yarn wigs are easier to pull off they basically look like fur wigs.
wefts (relatively big chunks of hair attached together, usually sewn in a strip) v. lace wigs (what looks like individual hairs attached to the cap)
I prefer not having wefts but I have a wig with wefts, it's annoying to photograph because you have to avoid showing the hairless strip parts.
      painted hair v. wigs
I don't like painted hair at all. Unless it's more like a head tattoo thing like Barbra from DC.
long hair v. medium length hair (interpret this how you will) v. short hair v. no hair
Depends on the character. Erin has short hair normally (Think average boy cut) but for his character he also has a long wig for when he goes into disguise. Sampson has short hair because that's the hair style of the person he's based off of. Long hair is fun to style and accessorize. Short hair can still be fun but I think it's less versatile. I never had a medium haired wig so I don't really know how I feel about them.

    20. I like store-bought synthetic wigs a lot, but I think handmade hide wigs can be very beautiful.
I have a lot more synthetic wigs, because I like the sheen a lot more.
I don't really like glued wigs, because they feel really odd near the scalp, and I always feel like I'm going to pull out a ton of hairs by accident.
I've never had a lace wig, but I'm quite sure I would prefer that instead of a wig with wefts.
Wigs all the way for me - I really like the different texture they can lend visually as well as by touch.
I think it really depends. I really want to get a shorter bob for my girl, but I like medium (past the shoulders) to long hair best. No hair looks slightly odd to me, as many companies put their stamp/making on the back of the head.
