What to do when you want two dolls equally but can only afford to buy one?

Sep 3, 2012

    1. As of now, I'm at a loss. I've been wanting a specific doll for a long while, but another company I love is going to be releasing a very beautiful doll soon, and I am torn. It seems as though I am equally in love with both; I only have the funds to buy one right now, and I know that I can get the other one later, but what if I make the wrong choice? I don't want to get one and then think, "Man, I should have gotten the other."

I'm wondering what you guys typically do in this kind of situation, since I'm so baffled by it all. *_*

    2. If you love them both, then it doesn't sound like either of them would be the wrong choice. :3

I'm always a believer in the approach of, "Why pick one when you can pick both?" If I'm in a situation where one doll will be available later, when I have funds again, and the other won't be, I'm typically inclined to pick up the limited one immediately -- since I may not have another shot at it -- then get the basic when it's more convenient. I figure, if I would likely regret missing out on either of them, why chance it? Even if it means a longer wait, I'll still get the basic doll in the end.

    3. I usually turn to ice cream....

Malaryush has the right idea. If they both seem to appeal to you equally at the moment, getting the limited one would be a beter idea if you can then start saving up for an unlimited later. And you'll be happy with a doll while saving up for the second.

If it does turn out that you look at the limited and hold it and play with it and yet feel unsatisfied and find your self wanting the other doll instead -- well, limiteds have more resale value generally, and selling that one will give you a way to get the other one. And there are no putdowns for waffling indecisiveness and wrong choices in this hobby! (However, if after going through all that and then finding yourself disatisfied with the second doll, and wanting the first one back again, then it's really time for ice cream--)

    4. If one is limited and one is a basic I immediately get the limited doll and buy the other one as soon as I can. If both are limited and I really need them I put both on layaway. If you really want a doll you can't make a wrong choice :)

    5. I agree with everyone who has said that if you love them equally, you won't make a wrong choice :)

I usually decide based on my budget, I'm more likely to get the less expensive one first and save up for the other. If both are equal in price, I'll decide based on availability (get a limited one first and save up for the standard).

The problem with some limited dolls is that they almost force you to make a very quick decision because the doll isn't always going to be available. There also aren't any owner pictures to base your decision on, so you have to have an open mind about the doll you'll get because they don't always look as the promo pictures say they will.

The good thing about limited dolls, as hobbywhelmed said, is that they tend to hold their value very well and can increase in value, so it is far more likely that if you feel you bought the wrong doll, you can usually sell it and put the money towards a doll you would like better.

    6. I think that I would be torn, then order one, and then immediately regret my choice whatever it was :) Then I will love the one I got.

    7. If you want more than one doll, and you really want them both, why not try saving for them both at the same time?

I want to buy more than one doll, too, and I've decided that a possible method is splitting whatever money I get between the two of them. So, if I have $100 saved up, each get $50 towards the total cost. I'd like to do this, and wait until both dolls can be bought so I can possibly have a double-box opening. I'm betting it will take longer to reach the new goal (since I'd be saving up the cost of two dolls) but that's OK.

It's not making a wrong choice if you really want both of them. But if you worry that you are, doing what I mentioned might help quell the worry.

    8. Budget is the key for sure. The only deal-breaker is: is one limited? Or is his/her skin-color limited? Then of course (money permitting,) I get that doll first.

But if you love both dolls, saving shouldn't be an issue. When I LOVE a doll, it doesn't matter how long I save for them. Knowing that I'll get them soon is good enough for me!

I try not to think about my dolls as "incoming", but as "here"...I draw pictures of it, I photoshop the company photo to look like my OC, etc., That way the wait-times don't kill me xD That helps, too!

    9. That's a tough choice. I suppose it depends on how patient you are and how much you actually want BOTH as oppose to one or the other.

I don't mind waiting, and I like having both if possible--so I'll usually go for the one on limited sale first.

    10. Well, if one is 'basic' and the other is 'limited' go for the limited first. If both are limited...toss a coin? If you can put them both on layaway and be able to actually pay both off that way, do so. If both are basics, then get the one you've wanted longer first, or toss a coin, or do the layaway thing.

    11. If one is limited or much harder to get, I'd get that one. If not, get the more expensive one. If I have enough cash in hand to get an expensive doll or one that doesn't offer layaway, I usually do that. It's easier to save later for the cheaper one or one that allows layaway. Or sometimes, I'll just buy the head and get a body later. Which might explain why I'll soon have 8 floating heads. lol

    12. I would buy both... eventually, so start with the limited one or the one that is more expensive, that way saving for the other would be a little bit faster.

    13. I'd go with the one you've wanted for a while. If you're anything like me, you might find you like the new one less once the novelty and "newness" of it wears off. I've seen dolls that I thought were beautiful and I HAD to have, then a few weeks later I'm less keen on it. I'm very fickle when it comes to dolls though.

    14. Always jump for the limited if you think you're in love! Limiteds, like souffles, don't wait for you; you wait for them. If you get him home and it's not really true love, reselling an LE is easier than reselling a basic.

Besides, it's easier (and often MUCH cheaper) to buy the LE now and not-want him later... than it is to not-buy the LE now, then decide later that you can't live without him, & have to break your neck searching the secondhand market for an unmodded fullset & paying the markup prices.

The basic model can come later when you have the funds. I too would buy both, if I thought I was in love with both. If you decide later that you only want 1 of them, then so much the better.

    15. To be completely honest?

I would find a way to buy both. A lot of times what my wife and I do is either put the doll on a longer layaway plan so the payments are smaller OR we search high and low for a buyer who is selling the doll secondhand. So far, the only doll I have not gotten that I’ve wanted is Soa from Iplehouse—when I come across a doll I like, I find a way to make it work.

    16. I actually ran into this problem a little while ago with a limited and an unlimited.

Interestingly enough, I wound up going with the unlimited that I'd been eyeing for months instead of the limited edition. I guess I wasn't quite as smitten with the LE as I thought I had been initially, because so far I have no regrets.

    17. I'm going to echo what some here have already said- if one is a limited, I would definitely get that one first, and if not then there are still some helpful questions you can think of. For example, do you find that the character for one is coming together more quickly and naturally than the other? Does the same go for the character's overall look, i.e. eye and wig colors, as well as what style of clothes they'll wear? If you find that one is indeed developing more quickly, I would go for that one first and save for the other when you can. :)

And if none of this applies, I would go for the one you've wanted for a longer time. I can be very fickle with sculpts and know that I might see one I absolutely adore at first, then later find that I don't like it or I spot some sort of flaw that I didn't notice before. This actually happened to me about a week ago when I was looking at a head sculpt I really liked, but then I noticed that her ears are completely uneven! As in, one is distinctly higher than the other! Now when I see the sculpt, I can't not see the unevenness- and let me tell you, I'm VERY happy that I didn't go off and buy that head earlier. It's for that reason that I would highly recommend buying the doll you know you've wanted for longer to avoid making such a discovery after you've bought the doll.

    18. How tough.... If only one-doll-fund is available, I think i will get the heads first if they are limited;\
If they are unlimited, i will be good and save up for the two dolls!

    19. Personally I'd try to get them both if I like them equally. Selling stuff or spending less money on other fun things (like snacks, shopping, going to the movies) may help saving up faster.

Or I would get none, because if I think I could not be happy with either one of them, they are both not the right doll to buy (in my case). I once couldn't decide between two dolls and I ended up buying a completely different doll on impulse. Never bought one of those two I was trying to decide between and I have bought many dolls since.

    20. My experience is that you *always* regret when you've made a choice. It's like you get Doll A, and after a while you're so used to his/her face that you sort of take it for granted, while Doll B, the 'unattainable' will grow more attractive with time...

I'd go for the one that is most likely to be limited and save up for the other, though.
