What's the cheapest you've sold/bought a doll for?

Dec 11, 2014

    1. So with so many new dolls out nowadays and the rate at which new bodies/skin tones/options become available, it seems that dolls aren't quite the 'investment' they used to be. Dolls are no longer sold at or close to their original sale price unless they are particularly rare or sought after. So I'm curious, when it comes time to sell your basic dolls, what's the biggest deal you've ever offered? On the flip side, what's the best deal you've ever come across?

*To clarify, I'm not referring to dolls that are usually "cheap" to begin with, I'm talking about the best deals.

    2. All I have seen so far are way too expensive... one of the highest price is $9,900usd

I don't know, beats me... if It comes to the face that you fall in love with, then I think you will do every saving you could to get the doll you love! :)

I'm new to the doll, just happened to across this hobby a few months ago; now I'm falling in love with almost every doll I have seen! ^_^

    3. That's a horribly bitter topic for me. The state of the market has left an awful taste in my mouth... I've sold LE15 dolls in pristine condition with the company faceup for less than the price of a regular blank doll from the same company, a pretty popular doll too. I've also pricedropped rare, discontinued, limited, really popular sculpts bellow company price and they still won't get sold. The only thing that does get sold is Minifees with the exception of the odd soom, volks and maybe Luts doll and it creates a vicious circle because people won't buy from other companies without the security they can sell if they don't like it so these companies become richer and the others poorer still with increasingly less sales.

    4. I hope that the BJD marketplace eventually means people start moving away from the idea of buying dolls to then resell them. I see this with action figures a ton too with the whole 'keep it in the box and it will be twice as valuable next year' mentality. I hope that with the market so glutted people focus more on getting dolls they love than getting dolls with the intention of reselling.

As for my best deal, I am currently in the middle of a layaway for a beautiful Volks Tenshi one off that is 100 bucks less than just the regular standard price. Given that it is both OOAK and has a face-up by a very well known Volks in-house artist, it feels like a complete steal.

    5. I know you said no "cheap" dolls, but in comparison to the normal price she sells, I got an amazing deal. It's not really important what the original price was, it's how much of it you had to pay. My Bobobie Ophelia normally sells for $180 with faceup. I got her from a friend and paid $120 for her, which is close to a 30% discount. I also didn't have to pay shipping. Admittedly, she is super yellow, but in a way, it suits her.

I also got a great deal on a PukiPuki off the marketplace. I paid $155 for her, including shipping. She even came with a wig, and she had a faceup. If had I paid full price, she would have cost me $188 dollars. That's around a 15% discount, and I still would have had to pay to ship her.

I wish people would shop the secondhand market more. Aside from limiteds, you can get some amazing deals.

    6. I almost never sell dolls; at this point, I've had 27 full dolls plus 3 additional heads enter the collection, and currently own 26 full dolls plus 2 additional heads. And the doll and head that were sold were sold ages ago, when the secondhand market was better, and with one (at the time) a highly sought-after limited.

I don't often shop the secondhand market, either, but may start looking around there a bit more. I had two dolls that I could only get via the secondhand market recently (old, discontinued sculpts) and while they've both needed repairs, I'd still call them a deal. Counting repairs, each cost me about $350, while the original price of the same doll would have been $490 or so. I probably could have sat and found ones in better shape for similar prices, and not have to have them repaired, as they were both extremely popular sculpts at the time that many collectors have moved on from, but I'm also enjoying the process of fixing up these "broken" dolls to be beautiful again.

    7. I once got a Doll Chateau Ada for the 20 dollars it cost to buy raffle tickets at a doll event. While Ada is already pretty cheap (at 149$), I've gotta say 20$ is quite the deal and I was very pleased~

    8. I buy, trade and sell so much, it's hard to say for sure. Not counting trades or gifts, I think the cheapest I've sold was an Impldoll head for $15 including shipping, and full doll was probably an AoD MSD for $90 including shipping. I'm an impatient seller, and I often do end up selling things for 1/3 or even 1/2 less than I paid.

Cheapest doll I've bought (going by below market/new price) was either my CustomHouse/Bobobie hybrid that I put together for $150, or an Iplehouse YID boy I used to own who I built from pieces and spent about $250 on. I also once owned a LE Iplehouse guy who sold new for around $800, but I picked him up for $400.

    9. I got my little Maskcat doll for $25 or so in a raffle ($170 regular price), but my Bisou Ai was only $80 direct from the company during a sale ($120 regular price). They're not the greatest 'deals' per se, since they're not super expensive to begin with, and honestly I don't count the raffle, but the best I've come across.

I bought a friend a doll in a 2-for-1 deal thing (regular $300 each), but those aren't offered any more.

    10. Thanks for sharing so far everyone, keep 'em coming! It's really interesting to see how the market has changed so much from when I first joined the hobby only 7 years ago. Who knew?

I myself try really hard NOT to sell my dolls, but I'm reaching the point where after a lot of thought, I think it's time to let go of my very first doll. I realize he's old, has had a LOT of modification work, has an old body and has probably yellowed a bit (though tbh I really don't think it's that bad as I've definitely seen yellow dolls and I think he's surprisingly fared pretty well), so it's ludicrous to think I could sell him anywhere near to his original price. Honestly at this point I'm more concerned with seeing him go off to someone who actually wants him as opposed to making a huge profit, but I know with recasts running rampant nowdays I'm wary of selling him too cheap for fear of him being labeled a fake. I don't want to see him sitting around on the marketplace forever though.

    11. I got my first dolls, Delf Soo twins, from a person who was leaving the hobby for good with $550 which covered the shipping fee as well. They both had a body, so I think the retail price would've been somewhere around $900; on top of that they came with 3 dresses, 1 shoes, 3 wigs and a faceup so I'm assuming the girls would have cost their first owner over $1000 at least. I think that was THE bargain of my BJD hobby.

As of selling...no, none at all. I'm a proud resin hoarder :P

    12. I've sold dolls for slightly less than they cost new, but only a couple of times when I really needed them gone. But the best deal I ever got on a doll was a "junk" Unoa 1.0 Sist that I paid about $250 for including shipping. She came with all the original packaging, box, wig, stand, and both bust parts. She was extremely dirty and yellowed but after a good scrub with a magic eraser and 91% alcohol she looks much better. She's still yellowed but it's even and not too bad. She matches my 1.0 Lusis pretty well.

    13. I don't tend to sell my dolls. I've only ever sold 2 of them I believe, so I don't have experience there.

I have purchased quite a few "project/junk" dolls though. I got one very old fullset doll from a company that went belly up for $60, two tinies also from defunct companies for $20 each.
Most of my dolls didn't cost me very much because I tend to buy really damaged ones and fix them up. I just feel so bad for the poor babies. ):

    14. All my dolls were fairly expensive >.< It's a tie between my minifee and DC Barbara. Both around $500. Maybe it's cheap to some people but it's quite pricey to me lol.

I have only sold one doll (body) and I did sell less than I paid and sold for $260 shipping included.

    15. I sold on doll for only £10 she was a Nabi kiss my first tan doll I offered her for sale on a fb group lots of people wanted her, some to give to children which I didn;t want, she wasn't junk and not a toy, so I stipulated she was to go to someone who wanted but had not been able to buy a bjd. I was very happy with the outcome so was the buyer a young mum.

    16. Up until recently all i've sold were MNF heads one an event head I sold for about 60 dollars including shipping. I sold my MNF kyle at a discounted price of 285 including shipping...but I didnt want him to hang in the MP forever. I've only bought two heads off the MP here one a MNF vamp shiwoo and a MNF Woosoo (who i re sold at a little more than half of what I paid originally). I dont usually buy full dolls off the MP but there is one I hope I will buy one day...a volks hewitt. I dont care if its just the head or not the fullset hes my grail. I saw one for abt 600 which was crazy to me because i remember him being way more! It was still out of my range but one day.

      sent through the forests

    17. Well I've not sold any dolls in over 5 years, and back then the marketplace was much different. I got full value for one and then a little over what I paid for a limited. Nowadays, I'm sure that wouldn't happen.

As for deals... I know you said cheaper dolls weren't really included, but for what I paid vs the actual value, I got a great deal on my Resinsoul Ling. She wasn't even a year old and had no real damage other than some staining that I removed myself. Resinsoul has listed Ling blank at $210 plus $38 shipping. The one I got on the marketplace had an artist commissioned faceup valued at $40 plus shipping. She also came with a free wig, two pairs of shoes, a full outfit, and an extra pair of pants. I paid $150 with free shipping. So that's over $100 off, not even including all the free stuff.

    18. To clarify what I meant about "cheap" dolls, I meant it's not that great of a deal if a $120 doll was bought for $110. But if a $120 doll was bought for $75, I'd say that's pretty good! It's all about the percentage of the deal :)

    19. The one that is on his way right now. He was originally 249usd and limited to 10 worldwide. I nabbed him up for 65usd plus shipping. Part of his original outfit is missing, he's 4 years old..... I think it's a good deal. I just wanted a tiny, I was shocked to see I could find a cute one under 100usd. I only found out he was limited when I was looking up when he was released. I have no intention of ever selling him, so it doesn't matter to me he was limited. He will be with me forever. There's lots of other things I would rather sell than my dolls.

    20. My best deal was for a $50 Doll Leaves Arwen that I bought solely to practice creative face ups on. But when she arrived she was so weirdly cute that I fell in love with her. Now that's a bargain!
