When It Comes To BJD's What Makes You Fussy?

Mar 5, 2015

    1. In real life I am admittedly very fussy about some things, like what goes into my stomach for instance, but I can be very laid back about a lot of things that drive other people crazy too. When it comes to BJD's I do have my quirks. I don't particularly like silicone discs between doll joints or hot glue either. I'm not real crazy about glass eyes or dolls with eyes that look like they belong in cartoons. Mods that look like a doll has been beaten, or otherwise hurt, they totally creep me out. You?

    2. I'm not really fond of dolls with certain types of open-mouthed smiles that show all of their teeth, or faces that are excessively pouty.

    3. Dolls with child-like "Little Girl" faces on very mature, boob-a-palooza bodies always make me o_0 a little.

    4. I get really fussy about my faceups. I don't hesitate to clean 'em off and do them again.

    5. I really hate when a doll's body is disproportionate in the torso or is overly pear shaped, like when the bust plate looks small enough to fit on an MSD, but the hips are wide enough for you to fist with.

    6. I really dislike eyes that don't have a stem. It's so much harder to position them with no stem! And it sucks because the majority of eyes that I use don't have stems (lookin' at you Mako eyes and Oscar doll..)

I'm also very particular about flyaways in wigs. If I have a GREAT picture I took, but then I see a flyaway and I can't edit it out, I chuck the picture because flyaways just ruin everything for me basically lol

Other than that I'm not too particular about anything

    7. eyebrows. im not fussy about them on other peoples dolls, but when commissioning a faceup the only thing i really care about is the eyebrows. :wiggle

    8. I can't stand dolls that look grumpy!!! I am the type of person that likes there dolls to look happy. I am also very fussy with eyes, I will spend a extra 20 dollars on glass eyes then buy acrylic ones that are 8 bucks because I think glass eyes look and feel nicer then acrylic.

    9. Huge eyes when the design of the face doesn't suit them. Seriously had a doll that really required 12mm eyes come with 18mm, scary >< I do prefer smaller eyes, even on dolls who are meant to look cute.
Also, torso joints. Big picky area with me, mostly because the joint has to be in a place where a human actually bends with me. I hear people saying the under bust jointing makes for better posing, but the sight of such makes me cringe. I go out of my way to create some sometimes insane hybrids to avoid this.

    10. This. XD
Also: guy dolls: muscular, slim body, six pack to jump on, but a 1st grader's face.

      I also don't like if when for any reason a doll has their legs or arms bent the wrong way. If the doll isn't mine I will even nicely ask their owner to fix it. ^^;

Lint on dolls' eyes. :ablah: And eyes that stare into your soul.

    11. Wonky eye positioning and the deer-in-the-headlights look.

It drives me crazy and I spend forever positioning my dolls' eyes to make sure the light catches on them correctly and they don't look like they're staring blankly into space...

    12. I'm fussy about face up's I will probably 99% of the time opt to do my own unless the default is absolute perfection like Loongsoul Emily's face up options. <3
I don't like overly big boobs on dolls.
I don't like sculpts like DD's I find anime style very rarely works in 3D.
I like eyes with stems so far I can't comment on the material since I have only ever used glass eyes. I also don't really like anime style eyes.
      Grinning dolls freak me out!

    13. Absolutely agree with Brightfires. Childish heads on adult bodies look very strange. Also don't like gross anatomical errors: for example, ears hanging on the cheekbones.

    14. I really dislike poorly sculpted over simplistic bodies/hands/feet. Fork shaped hands give me shudders! Urgh!

    15. Knee & elbow joints! If they are too square or gap a lot, I'll pass on the doll or try to hybrid it. If that's not possible (special resin color, for example) I'll dress the doll in long sleeves & skirts or pants to cover those wonky joints up. I'd rather have limited mobility than ugly double joints on a doll. Best looking double jointed knees are ShinyDoll, they look so natural!

Eyes that have visible putty smears on them. I hate that!

    16. For some reason I really like my dolls in only long sleeves. I don't really know why and it never really even occurred to me until I was looking for a dress for my new girl and I realized I was adamant about it having long sleeves (which blows since I passed up some really cute sleeveless and short sleeve dresses). To a lesser extent this also extends to long pants too. This I never much thought about as all my dudes wear pants (except for the one with hooves) and they aren't the type to wear shorts, but now for my girl...I'm on the hunt now for tights to go with her dress.

I think it's something about the joints. They just look better without them showing? More realistic? I don't really know, but hopefully I can get over that to some extent, there's some seriously adorable outfits out there I'm missing out on!

    17. I don't really care what others do with their dolls, but for my own:

-Fur wigs. I love fur wigs for Jack, but I'm very picky about the quality. I don't want them too thick or it looks like a hat to me. It can't be kinked up or frizzy. It has to brush smoothly, and fit the head right. In fact, I'm so picky, I really mostly only like BeachGirlNikita's wigs.

-Eye size and position. I hate when no white shows, or when the eyes look crossed or wall eyed. And some sculpts don't have even eye holes, so even when I get the eyes perfect, they look wonky in some pictures. I'm not even too picky about what kind of eyes they are, though I usually prefer silicone, but they have to be the right size and position so the doll doesn't look bug eyed.

-Jeans. I've been spoiled by companies like Nine9 Style, TTYA and Iplehouse and now I'm super picky about having realistic looking jeans.

    18. I'm fussy about male doll bodies, I can't stand thin hips or overly muscular bodies. I also hate eyes with flat backs, they're so fiddly and hard to position ;3;

    19. Eyes without stems - they're so hard to position. I'm very picky about getting the eyes just right. I also don't like acrylic eyes for my dolls. It seems to give them that dead-eyed, horror movie look.

Human hair wigs. Yes, I realize it's the same stuff that grows on my head, but all I can think is "EWWWW!" Strangely, I have no problem with mohair.

The other thing I really don't like is heads that look too small for the body. I know it's a more realistic proportion and the wig usually evens things out, but some of them look to me like a RealPuki head on a Feeple60 body.

    20. Period dressmaking that's not really "period". That's me being nitpicky I guess, and the sound of a 30k grad school education going to waste. A lot of people say something is "Victorian" when really there is a lot of difference between a Victorian dress c1860 and one c. 1880 or 1890. They just slap all the puffed sleeves and ruffles together without any real regard. Its one thing to say "I'm doing a fantasy piece or steampunk..." But then people say "I'm trying for an authentic look..." And nothing spoils a period look more than cheap, stiff, polyester satin and lace.

This is why I almost always dress my own dolls.
