which do you prefer? Snaps, buttons, or removing a head?

Nov 29, 2007

    1. So I just figured out (duh) that it may be better to not make an opening in the back and simply remove their heads when putting a shirt on, instead of making an opening with snaps or buttons. Which do you prefer?

    2. I suppose for me it depends on whether I'm photographing the dolls are not. For photos, you really can't beat the ones without openings, but for ease of dressing, its so much easier to just put the top on and not have to remove their heads! I guess also there are people that aren't comfortable with removing the heads!

I sometimes go for a compromise and sew half way up the back and leaving the top half open. Then in most cases the hair is covering the opening.

I'm not much help Jen, sorry!!!

    3. I tend to make my shirts and tunics so that they can pull over the head or from the feet up, but I have no issues at all with taking heads off (or hands off, if it's a Volks). When I do leave the back open, I don't use buttons/snaps, I grommet/lace so that it will fit a wider range of dolls.

It does intimidate some people, though...I spent a half-hour at Dollpa with one woman showing her how to take off her Yo's headcap/head/etc, because she was very nervous about it.

    4. I prefer 1/2-openings myself. While I don't have a problem removing heads in general, some of my tinies especially have washers or other modifications to keep their heads on so it's just a more complicated process. Since I'm pretty indecisive I tend not to just dress my dolls and be done, but play around with swapping pieces for a bit. : ) Full-open tops tend to have snaps and look less realistic. If it's a full outfit or complicated piece it's better to remove the head for a more accurate fit/look, but for mix-n-match pieces I go more for convenience.

As for hands, I absolutely hate taking them off because they tend to have weak wires or fake S-hooks that I'm afraid of breaking. One day I'll redo them all...

    5. I won't buy things that force me to remove a head. I just don't like doing it. Half openings or snaps is what I look for.

    6. I agree with Sher; I don't want to have to remove a head to change clothes.

    7. Third that. I will remove the headcap on my Supia to make getting into snug tees easier, but removing Moona's head? Nope. Snaps, hooks or buttons, please.

    8. Fourth...I like it when people do snaps and then sew buttons behind them to give the look.

    9. Hmmmm. So it looks like sewn half up and then snaps or hooks wins out. Thanks for playing!

    10. Snaps are my favorite. I wouldn't buy/make anything that I had to remove the head because Tatum's head is horrible to take off. It has no S-hook or anything, so I have to untie the elastic to remove it (I'm going to get around to putting one in, but so far there is none). It's too much effort to untie and usually unstring her, just to put a top on. I do like the half way sewn with a snap or two in the back though, mostly because that maens less snaps to sew on, and as much as I love them when they're on, I hate sewing them on!

    11. I like snaps better. Lot easier. :)

    12. A lot of doll's heads are tied on or otherwise hard to get off. Personally I would never prefer removing a doll's head (or hands, or feet) to get clothes on. Even if a particular doll's head is easy to get off and on, there may be other dolls that wear the same size clothes whose heads are hard to get off. And I don't want to drag anything over my doll's faceup.

I have bought some handmade things I expected to have a back opening, and they didn't, so those items are like wasted money for me.

For snaps vs buttons, I prefer snaps or the little sewing hook-and-eye fasteners.

    13. I think for me its the size of the tiny that will determine if I'll take the head off or not.
Some of the tinies are really, really tiny and the eye putty takes up most of the head space and I dont want to have to play with eyes for an outfit. So for the teeny tinies, I look for closures or things that go over the head.
For the slightly bigger dolls, I prefer not to have to take the head off, but will if I really, really like the outfit.
For closures, in order, I prefer snaps, velcro, buttons.

    14. :) I prefer snaps, velcro for the tinys and the 1/4 dollfies.

    15. I'll pipe in with nearly everyone else- a snap or velcro half length closure is I best, I think. Small buttons can be fiddly and difficult to do up- a friend of mine has the outfit from the special Baby the Stars Shine Bright Toppi (the red riding hood set) and from what I remember everythign on that outfit is either a buttoning button or in a couple of cases a hook and eye. It looks FABULOUS, but the thing was so difficult to put on that I wanted to scream at some points. ^^; I didn't mind taking my mini's hand off to get the sleeve on (of course she has S hooks unlike some tinies), but taking the head off is just too much hassle I think. And the more messing around with the head, either by taking it off or pulling it over, the more likely the faceup will get rubbed, scratched, or otherwise messed up. T_T

    16. I would only buy clothes that require head removal for a doll with a CP Type 2 head connection... I wouldn't mess with it otherwise.

I like snaps, it doesn't bother me. If I'm photographing, I'll hide the seams.

    17. I prefer small snaps, sometimes buttons (but they are harder for me)
velcro is usually my last choice, it snags nylons, lace and wigs.

(and clothes requiring head removing is out for me)

    18. Anything but removing the head!
Yes yes taking the head off doesn't require that much work, but I'm just lazy.
And it feels kind of mean to be pulling their heads on and off every so often :(

I don't have a problem with photographing clothes with snaps or buttons etc - lots of human clothes have those too, right?

    19. Snaps, I dont like taking heads off it worries me lol and velcro makes things bulky at the back

    20. I prefer to not have to remove any heads, however I *love* the neckpiece on my Minifée...it makes taking her head off so incredibly easy. I took my Lati's head off, though, and about NEVER got the darn thing back on!! That elastic is *tight*. I couldn't get a good enough grip on both his body and the neck ring to haul the elastic back up through the head. I was terrified that I was going to break him.

So, yeah. Give me snaps and half-openings, please!
