Which do your prefer? Big hands or small hands?

Jul 22, 2012

    1. After receiving my third doll I immediately noticed how small his hands were, especially compared to my other SD which is merely three centimeters taller. Not just that, but they are fragile looking as well. I didn't realize how big my other doll's hands were until I received this guy. To most, the newcomer's hands are average, but since my first doll has relatively large hands, they appear tiny. My second doll's hands, (an MSD) are nearly as big as his. It's pretty funny actually.

Now that that's out of the way, I would like to see what size you prefer your doll's hands.

And what is small, average, and large to you?

Strange question I know, but I'm sure there are people out there as crazy about hands as I am. :)

    2. I was surprised about how large my doll's hands seemed until a friend pointed out how much more realistic they are than the small hands. Hold up your hand while standing in front of a mirror, and you'll see just how large the area of your hand is compared to the area of your face. In general, I like the larger, more realistic proportion of the hands.

The down side: getting clothes to go over those big, inflexible man-hands.

    3. I would say how manly the hands look affect me more than the size. (Since I have male dolls only, so far). I would prefer bigger hands over smaller ones, unless the big ones are really out of proportion. My Little Monica body came with small and large hands but I chose the small ones, because the big ones make the wrist look way too small and fragile. The big hands are a nice size but just inappropriate in proportion. But I wouldn't want girl hands on my male dolls e.g. female delf hands on delf boy. It just looks too small and with fingers that are too thin.

But to answer your question, I usually prefer larger hands. Small hands for male 60+cm SDs would be like delf (especially #4 Chiwoo's "curled up" hands), average maybe the small Little Monica, and large hands would be Volks SD13 and Little Monica large hands, something along those lines. But then again, I'm speaking from experience with the dolls I have, so I'm pretty sure there's more out there.

Oh yeah. By the way, Dollzone has pretty huge hands, including the jointed hands. My friend uses the 65cm jointed hands for a 70cm doll, and it's HUGE. Just saying.

    4. Big ones, definitely. I have all boys and I love their big knuckly paws. :D I also have disproportionately large hands myself, so they don't look unnatural or bizarre to me. Some of these guys, with huge hands & skinny arms, have the same Flyswatter look that I do. xD

Too-small hands are the worst. Drive me CRAZY. Soom Gem boys come with these pathetic little vestigial flippers; they weren't much bigger than my Namu's own nose, which looked ridiculous to me. So I put some Delf hands on him, and now he's perfect. Volks SD10 boys come with the little genderless dolly-hands that are also ridiculous on a boy. But luckily Volks makes SD10 option-hands that look bigger and less girly, so I just had to pick up a couple pairs of those.

But if the hands are TOO much larger than the face, it does look weird.... Souldolls & MegaGems, we're looking at you here.

Re fitting big hands through tight sleeves = that is why those blessed Volks people created the One-Touch system, to make hand removal even easier than clothes removal. :chocoheart SD13s, 16s & 17s have massive hands, but dressing them is a breeze. For my non-Volks giants, hand removal requires clamps & such, which is a hassle-- but I prefer a little hassle over the risk of ripping an expensive doll-garment.

    5. I would say that I prefer larger hands on my boy dolls and smaller hands on my girls. However even girl dolls sometimes have hands that I feel are way too small and if I had to chose between teeny hands and larger hands on a girl I would still choose the larger hands. My Zaoll was a good example. They have large hands for a doll but I would prefer that over some of the other sculpts I've seen with itsy bitsy hands.

Small hands on a boy doll REALLY bother me though!

    6. I like hands that are proportionate to the doll...but I absolutely love longer, slim hands...with long elegant fingers. Piano hands as a friend of mine would call them.

    7. For boy dolls I prefer bigger hands and for girl dolls I prefer smaller (but long) hands. For mature girl dolls I love me some long, slender, piano fingers. Those generally go better with a bigger over-all hand than a small one. Something that bothers me at times with dolls is male and female dolls from the same company having the same sized hands. I know it's a normal thing to do as it is pretty realistic, but I just don't like it for some reason, haha. I guess I like to imagine them holding hands and his hand being bigger than hers and encircling it or something?:sweat

    8. I'm not sure if I really have a preference, but I must say that my SID's big hands are by far my favorite hands out of the dolls I own. They have much more detail than my MSD's hands, which are quite small-seeming even for an MSD, and feel more life-like to me.

    9. I am not really sure what my preference is, probably more in the average to small size. The only one of my dolls that I had an issue with was my Zaoll Luv, her default hands are too big... And posed in a way that made dressing a little bit of a hassle.

    10. I prefer my doll's hands to be more proportionate than not, but I really love doll hands so I like to have as many types as possible in my group so they are not all the same. I'd rather have a bunch of different types of hands than worry about the proportion overly much. I like jointed hands, relaxed hands, posed hands, fatty hands, knuckly hands, you name it.

Delf hands make me a bit nuts though, they are so lovely yet they the epitome of what I think is way too small. >__<

    11. LOL Ivory Stardust loves to give me hell for how obsessed I am with big hands. :P

I absolutely cannot stand small hands on my dolls. A human hand should be proportionate to the face. The tip of the middle finger should touch the hairline when the bottom of the palm touches the chin. (not always true, but that's what I was taught in art school and it is accurate with most people I know). I realize doll's heads tend to be a little big, but when a hand is so small it barely covers the mouth and not even the nose, it just makes me cringe and think of the Burger King Jr Whopper commercials where the guy's hands are too small to hold a burger. -shudder-

When I finally got my 5star Tumnus that I'd been waiting on for 5 months, I just about cried when I saw his hands - they're about the same size as my MSD AoD boy's hands. This was especially horrifying, considering my Tumnus is paired with my SD AoD Gu, whose hands are about twice his size, and the Tumnus is supposed to be the "manly" one! He now has DZ 65cm hands on order as replacements...

If the entire doll is tiny or girly, it doesn't bother me as much, but it still bugs me. I've noticed a lot of MSD and smaller dolls tend to have really short pudgy fingers: "sausage fingers".....even on the child dolls, it bothers me.

I might be weird, but I'm completely OCD about doll hands. So most of my boys end up with a set of AoD or 65+ hands on order. As weird as it is, I think I'd rather have a doll with a disproportionately small head or body than baby hands. lol

    12. It didn't used to bother me in the least. I was fine with whatever hands my doll came with. Of course, my first was a MSD BBB Tony, who has pretty, slender hands. Next was an AoD boy with the 1st Gen "pointy" hands... but still big.

This is changing, though, and I blame CloakedSchemer for this. Mostly b/c several of my boys are paired with hers, and some of mine are the "manly" half of the couple.... yet they have these smaller hands.... and it bugs me. So now I have several who are getting hand-ectomies.

    13. what size you prefer your doll's hands.
I don't like hands to be too small. BUT... you realize that smaller hands are better for putting clothes on--right? Clothes fitting dolls is sometimes a big consideration for those sculpting the dolls. It's often why some things look odd when the doll is naked.

Some buyers appreciate having a doll that fits most clothes and looks good in them. Others prefer the shapes of the dolls to come first and then making or finding clothes that will fit them.

what is small, average, and large to you?
Size of hands is important for establishing proportion. Also for feminine vs masculine. Larger hands are more masculine-looking (men tend to have bigger hands).

Ideal proportions usually say that a hand should be roughly as long as the face, from chin to hairline.

Of course, in Real Life and in dolls, there are all kinds of variations and no true rules!

    14. A lot of that depends on the character of the doll in question, for me at least. But I agree with a lot of the statements here about how it's nice if the hands are proportional to the face/wrists/etc.

One of my favorite things about larger hands is the veining, so that does give big hands a big plus in my book. I like the look and feel of them and can spend ages just touching them.

I did not know this rule about proportions (though I did know there was something about hands being a certain size in relation to one's face). My middle finger only reaches my eyebrows when placed against my face, so I suppose that throws off my concept of what is proportional with hands since I see my own most often.

    15. I personally prefer medium to larger hands. I have pretty huge hands myself, so maybe it's just my way of feeling better about myself ;) Though I honestly didn't put much thought into it until I received my AriaDoll 14 years boy body...boy howdy are his hands tiny! They're adorably and wonderfully crafted however, and as he is a bit on the petite size in height compared to my other SD sized boys, I can deal with it. Same goes for my Glorydoll boy...well, he's actually got googly fingers to be perfectly honest, but since he's the smallest of all my big boys it's alright with me. Thankfully only these two have tiny hands, everyone else have bananahands, so I'm peachy keen. Besides, diversity is what makes the world go round :)

    16. Okay, large, to me, would be....... like a Supia boy's hands, for example. They're way out of proportion to me. Small, on the other hand (no pun intended) would probably be around Dollmore Adam 'small' hands. I prefer average to small hands because big hands just creep me out 'cause it makes the head look too small. My Migidoll Ryu has perfectly sized hands IMO. ^ - ^

    17. Proportion is important. A male doll with a very effeminate, sweet, stylized face and veiny, masculine hands looks odd to me. On the opposite end of the spectrum is a male Soom Mecha Angel at 80cm and adult facial features with tiny dainty hands, which make him look like a T-Rex. I had to replace my Sabik's hands with much more proportionate DiKa jointed ones. I had a chance to try Soom Idealian's hands, and they fit perfectly, unfortunately, they are not sold separately.

    18. I prefer them to be proportionate, obviously, but if I had to pick I'd probably go with smaller..
Awkward, over-large hands creep me out! Whether it's a doll or a person.

Since I just received my first doll yesterday, and have only ever seen a few dolls in person at a meet once, I couldn't really tell you what I consider to be small or large! Honestly, I kind of thought my littlefee's hands seemed big in relation to the rest of her at first, but now I think they are fine. This could be because for a long time I was looking at ordering a pukifee, and right before I ordered had a sudden change of heart and got a LTF instead, before looking at very many pictures.

    19. My first BJD was A kid Dikadoll (Rena) i was stunned how big were her hands, after that i bought an Unoa and then A Raspberry, i must admit i prefer smaller hands. Thing is Dikadoll hands and feet are not well proportionned, it's not that shocking but it's way prettier with small hands especially when i take pics of them with hand near their heads.

    20. For a male doll I would definitely prefer (proportionately) larger hands. I find big, masculine hands to be, well, handsome *shot*

I could go either way on females, depending on the personality of their character
