Which Is More Important To You?

Mar 15, 2011

    1. I'm just curious if there are other people like me.

Which is more important to you, bringing your doll home or bringing your doll home with clothes/wig/etc? This doesn't apply to fullsets obviously :)

I'm usually satisfied with just getting my dolly home. I crochet and can make something work for them untill I can afford clothes and wigs and all that. It usually stunts my doll getting home by about a month if I order everything else at the same time.

How about you? Do you need to have all your goodies before you get them, ordered with doll, etc?

    2. I think it is nice to order for example a wig and eyes with a new doll (if they don't come with her). But especially I prefer to order full-sets with bunch of clothes and wigs

    3. I'm the type who gets a couple things home first, then the doll, then a few more things. For example, I'll get clothes and shoes before the doll. Next I'll get the doll and after that I get the wig and the eyes, then a face-up if it needs a new one.

    4. Well, I only have the one, which doesn't constitute a pattern, but I can at least approximate. ;)

I think getting the doll home is the more important thing, especially if it's a limited mold or one that requires some hunting to acquire--unless of course the right doll, clothes, and/or wig all come from the same place and would allow me to save on shipping a bit to get them all at once. XD That was actually the original plan, though I'll admit I was a little saddened that that would be the route I'd probably have to go, since for the first I wouldn't have really any point of reference for pre-making clothes or anything.

However, I got totally lucky in the marketplace, and managed to find a doll with the right body and head for a character I'd wanted to realize in dolly form, and she came with eyes, wigs, and some clothes to boot! (No shoes though, which I still haven't remedied either. *sigh*) Crazily enough, one of the wigs was really close to what I wanted for the character, too, and is currently her default wig. I was quite glad I was able to bring her home with that stuff taken care of, because even though it's taken some work to migrate her more in the direction I wanted her, I could at least have her out on display in the meantime.

For any consecutive dolls though, I'm definitely more amenable now to bringing them home bald, blind, and naked--because I already have some spares floating around a new girl could borrow in the meantime. There's something to be said for having stuff on hand, even if it's only supposed to be a placeholder.

    5. I don't even have one yet, but I plan to order the wig and clothes around the same time as the doll, so when she comes I can get her all kitted out right away. I've got them all picked out from different places tho, so I wouldn't expect ordering clothes from company X would delay the delivery of my doll from company Y.

      8^)

    6. I like to make everything for my doll myself; wig, clothes, shoes, the only thing I don't make is the doll itself and the eyes XD
I only have one doll so far, but this is my plan for all of the dolls I want to get.
So, yes, I'll just order the doll, but usually I'll take the measurements from the site and try to make something simple for them to wear until I have time to fit and make proper outfits for them.

    7. Bringing the doll home. I can be very slow with collecting everything - have a Peroth head who still needs a face-up and a body, but I just HAD to have him when Esthy did a pre-order of him in 2007 - but that's just me. It will take me at least a few more months before I order that one Mucha- poster I've been dreaming of for about a year, because I want to really enjoy getting it home and right now I have bought something else for my new house.

Some dolls I have for over 4 years and they still don't have shoes. It's not that I don't care, but I want to find the one pair for them that suits their characters. Same with wigs and outfits and if they are not available at a given time, I'll wait. I like waiting. Makes the buying that more special.

    8. It's important to me to get at least a basic set of clothes and at least one wig ready for a doll before it arrives....mostly since I don't want a naked and bald doll sitting around my dorm/house (it just wouldn't be very appropriate to me).

Since I cannot sew then that means that I have so far ordered a set of clothes and a wig shortly after ordering a doll, so that they are ready by the time the doll arrives.

I suppose if I ever encountered a situation where I had to have a doll home first (before clothes and such), then the doll would probably sit in a drawer or somewhere else protected until I can fix the naked/bald problem.

    9. Definitely the doll first and then the faceup (if necessary) and accessories! Almost all of my dolls share wardrobe so I just use whatever's here in the meantime. I also have a small amount of spare eyes that can be used as temps before I get eyes that really suit the doll.

    10. I've always gotten the doll first so far. Mainly because I make all their clothes, so I can't sew it until they arrive.

    11. With my having to be more picky about my dolls as no longer can afford to try out anything new I like to at least have clothes that fit. I have plenty of wigs and eyes, but if this new doll is in a size that I don't think anything here will fit, then must get clothes. But with dolls I am getting both lately and on wish list I have extras of clothes for them. Just a couple are in need.

    12. It's nice to have something already on hand-- in fact, for both my guy at home and my two on layaway, I had/have a wig(s) waiting at home. But the most important thing for me is the doll itself, and if it took me a while to find the right wig, then I wouldn't mind having a bald dolly (Vince hangs out bald some of the time anyway, and now that my floating head has a faceup that doesn't go with 'his' wig, he's bald for a while.

When Vince first arrived, he didn't have much in the way of clothes and hung out in sort of underwear/pyjama stuff until I could accumulate a couple nice things. He spent the half-year between his arrival and Christmas without shoes. I didn't mind because his little bare feet are so cute...

Who knows how long it'll be before I find the right shoes for Pete, but I know that when he gets here, I'll be more happy about having him than I will be worried about what I don't have.

      =^__^=

    13. I think that I did it wrong the first time by having the doll here first then ordering the wig, eyes, clothes. The second time around I am doing the opposite.

    14. I'm new to this hobby and already I have found out my tastes regarding this subject. I like having at least an initial wig and outfit here for when the doll arrives. If I can't dress them, put in eyes, and get a wig on them when I get them home, they feel incomplete and just off to me. Even if, once I get everything on them, I realize it doesn't work and eventually they'll need something else, I still need something here. I guess because I want them to look like the character they represent right out of the box. I find it helps the bonding process. Like, my boy Vi didn't have his wig when he first got here and I was trying so hard to really like him. It was only when he got his wig that he clicked for me, even though the wig isn't the right type it was the color that did it made it seem like Vi, if you get me. :D

    15. I think I fall somewhere in between -- the doll is definitely the main attraction. However, I don't do a lot of sewing, so I do have to make sure I have clothes, a wig, shoes, etc. At this point I have enough stuff built up, that I can usually do a decent temp job of styling the doll. That said, if I have the cash, I do like to go ahead and buy an outfit when I buy the doll just so that the clothing situation doesn't become tight around here.

    16. I usually buy accessories while I'm waiting for the doll. I can not sew so I have to necessarily buy something.

    17. I always buy a wig and basic outfit for the doll (and maybe eyes if i have a specific eye color the character needs). I just can't bond as well with a bald, naked doll as I can with a doll with hair and clothes. At the very least they need to have a wig.

    18. Echoing the above, I wouldn't be able to really connect with a doll that has no face-up/wig/eyes as well as one that did. Clothing isn't a big deal for me, I can wait for that if I have to (or borrow from my other dolls' clothes), but face-up/wig/eyes are a must. So, I guess the latter option is more important. However, I have yet to want any limited mold, so I don't have to worry about scrambling to get a mold first and foremost before anything else. I'm okay if I have to hunt around for a good wig before purchasing a doll, or at the very least a temporary one to hold over until I find a perfect one.

If there was a doll that I really really wanted and it happened to be limited, I would bring the doll home first - but I would probably keep it boxed until I got the basics for it.

    19. I have had a doll comes to me in "fullset" from faceup to wig and eye and clothes (my very first doll) and I've had dolls that come to me naked (no faceup but with random eye/wig). Ideally though, I'd love to have his outfit/eye/wig ready before he comes but sometimes things doesnt work that way. So at the very least, I'd want to have a basic wig, eye and outfit available so they can remain in that until I find something more suitable for him.

    20. At first I thought, just getting the doll home would be most important. However, after getting my bald Xander in his birthday suit I felt guilty. I still do, actually, because I can make him clothes but he still has no hair or shoes. As a result I have made an effort to prepare everything for my Mei when she arrives. She has a few outfits lined up and a beautiful wig I bought at a doll meet. I would definitely never get the doll before their eyes though. There must be eyes or the doll must wait because eyeless dolls fell incomplete and frighten me to no end. That is also the reason why I will probably never have a floating head. T.T Scary....
