"Who are you wearing?" - Knowing the specifics of wigs, eyes & faceups for your dolls

May 15, 2010

    1. Ok, not sure if I like the title. Anyway, I didn't think there was something like this already being discussed and I didn't think this was quite a debate topic, so I've started this here.

I've noticed for a while now that there are some people who know exactly what their doll has in terms of wig, eyes, face up, clothes, even jewelry and accessories. When rattling off what wig, they not only know the company but the style and color number. Same for eyes.

In thinking about my own collection, I can tell you where I bought much of what they have, but on a more general term. Like that my one boy has Masterpiece acrylics, but I can't remember the color name or the exact size. Or I know that my girl has a wig I bought from Ebay, but I can't remember the seller or the company. And several of them have custom face ups that I have no idea who did them, because when I bought them either the seller didn't know, or didn't mention. I can remember certain things I bought, but for a vast number of them, all I can say is - "That wig is brown" or "Those eyes are green".

So I'm wondering two things. How many of you out there actually know what your dolls are wearing? How much of where they came from do you actually know?

And the second thing is: How much do you like other people to know about their dolls should you like something they have and want something similar?

In an almost debate-like question, I wonder if people think it's better if we all learn and remember the exact specifications of the items we buy for our dolls - where we bought it, who made it, the size it is.

As for me personally, I wish I did know all the specifications - partially in case I need to get replacements! I'm impressed with others who have this kind of information, although I by no means think someone is less of a doll owner for not having any idea about what their dolls are wearing.

      So what are your thoughts?

    2. I had made the mistake of buying the same wigs twice from Leeke because I did not remember that I had bought one in the past so................It's good to know so you don't end up buying repeats!

I know where most of the items my dolls are using come from and what brand and maker/company, however when it comes down to style number and eyes item number of course those I would have to look them up XD As for who did the face-ups for all my dolls I know all except for those that did not specify (such as custom face-up from Luts, and custom face-up from Crobidoll and DOD, and FCS face-up, and the Dollmore limited I have also did not state who did the face-up) So out of all my dolls only 5 of them I do not know who did their face-ups.

I think it's fine if the owner doesn't know where the accessories or clothes or wigs come from but as for the face-up I think that's the most important part that everyone should know if they can find out. Because for me it would bug me if I were to purchase a custom head with custom face-up and not know who painted it and what mods has been done to it. ><

    3. I am one of those people you mention, OP - I can rattle off everything my dolls have, most off the top of my head. I know colors, brands, sizes - even if I bought an item new or second-hand. Yes, my Petsha wears a 6-7" Dollga W071 in Eve Cream (simply an example). ;) Of course, it's easy for me because each of my dolls only have one wig / one pair of eyes / one default outfit (which may or may not be a combination of multiple sets).

I guess it comes naturally to me. I don't know why I choose to retain such things. I'm like that in other hobbies, too. In the case I forget something, I also keep a list of manufacturers, etc. that I can reference if necessary. I write down face-up artists and customizers I have commissioned. I even note arrival dates, which can help if I choose to sell an item. I also keep tags, company invoices, etc.

It doesn't really matter to me how much another owner knows about his/her dolls' accessories. For me, keeping track is half the fun (yes, I'm detail-oriented). I will admit I appreciate good record keeping in general, though. It's in my blood.

    4. I know most of the wigs and also where their clothes came from. I don't always know with eyes though, often because a lot of the eyes floating in the eye box came as someone's default, so I didn't buy them on my own. Stuff that I went through the process of picking out and buying separately I remember, stuff that I got as door prizes, in a swap, or as part of a default I tend to be fuzzier on.

    5. It's good to make note of the details in whatever way a person finds best. In case they need to resell, replace, or even just for their own records. I don't think anyone should be pressured to do this, but it could certainly come in handy. Especially for insurance purposes to record the cost and what the exact items are.

    6. I do remember the location of the wig / clothes I bought for my dolls. But I can't remember the name (But I can always dig out the link for you) or the colour codes for it.

Still, it won't be hard for me to identify as I kept an Excel record of what I bought / plan to buy for my dolls. I have them written with item names, price, company, additional notes, direct links and so on. I do specify who is it for too. I differentiate them with different highlight colours so I know which should be priority and such. It makes things easier for me when I want to buy something from a company, I could batch buy by checking my records.:)

    7. I've been writing down everything carefully so that I can say all that stuff later. After reading some threads, I thought it was manditory... :sweat

    8. I tend to have a sort of general idea of everything (i.e. I know where all my wigs are from and usually the colour name but not necessarily the model number), which I think is largely because I buy all of my doll things direct or through group orders. I don't have anything against secondhand items, but I rarely seem to find anything I want on the marketplace, and since I'm in Australia it's usually better to order from a shop where I can get multiple things instead of paying international shipping for one item. I also don't have a lot of dolls and doll items, I imagine if I had 20 dolls and clothes/wigs/eyes/shoees for them all it would be a lot harder to keep track or where everything came from!

I do think it's nice when people know where the things on their dolls come from or who did the faceup (even if it's just to say that it's a company faceup), because often I will see something I really like on another doll and wonder where I can get my own. I sometimes get PMs or comments asking where I got something from as well, so I can't be the only one! It also means that I can more easily replace wigs or eyes if I need to (or get more in the same colour) or that if I find an outfit or pair of shoes that fits a doll really well I'll know to shop there again. I don't think you should have to know these things, but it's convenient if you do (and it's better to include this info if you ever sell on items you don't want anymore).

    9. Oh good god no... I have way too much to remember. Some I do, some I couldn't say because I have no clue what brand or where they came from.. things just sort of end up here.

    10. I have a spreadsheet that I keep track of all things doll related. What the item is, where is came from (company and seller if I pick it up in the Marketplace) and how much I paid,

Sad, but handy at times. :sweat

    11. I know a lot of my wig/eye specifications, for the ones that are worn every day. We have a huge box of wigs, though...I'm afraid I don't have a firm grip on where all of them came from! Ironically, my 'favorite' doll in the house wears secondhand Masterpiece silicone eyes (forest, I think) and a secondhand bi-colored Kstarr wig from forever ago. I've never been able to find anything I like as much!

Tonboko: You've inspired me, now I have to go through all of my records and make a spreadsheet! I love spreadsheets!

    12. I keep detailed notes on doll things I buy for many reasons, the most important being should I ever sell that item I will know what it is, which will help bring in a buyer. Those keywords including color, size, company and style will bring me a buyer a lot easier than just 'red wig' or something will. I would never buy a wig from someone who called it a "blonde wig from some company I don't remember.", I'm picking about the quality of wigs and therefore only buy from certain company's who's quality I know is up to my standards. If I don't know what I'm buying, I'm not buying it and I know I am far from the only person who is like this.

    13. I'm working on keeping a little mini-database on my computer. Right now it's mostly 'To Buy', listing what the perfect defaults are for my future guys and gals, as well as any habitual disguises, but as I get things I'll be adding more to a separate file for what I own (and who is using it).

      =^__^=

    14. I tend to know the company name of most of my guys' wigs and clothes etc but not the specific product code or number that describes them (like Leekeworld's different wigs and so on). Eyes tend to be even easier since almost all my guys wear Mystics, and while I can remember the colour-names of most of them I find it harder to keep in mind numbers rather than actual names ("Limited #6" vs "apple green", for instance) which I really should do something about -- I feel like such a bad owner when people ask me at meets which eyes one of my boys has in and I have to resort to "Um... Mystic Limited somethingorother...!" :sweat

What a good idea!! I wish I'd thought to do something like that when I started the hobby, though I think it's too late for me now given how much stuff my guys have! Nothing at all wrong with being organised, and it sounds like you've got everything nicely under control there ^__^

    15. I KNOW where everything came from and what the relevant details of it are, but I may not always know it to rattle off on first inspection. I do keep a sort've mental map of where it all came from and how much it cost me purely because I work to a budget and I like this hobby to be relatively self funding these days, so when I sell something on, I need to know I'm not taking a massive hit on it.

It's interesting to know that some people keep spreadsheets, it's a damn good idea but I can live without being scared by the total amount...

    16. I definitely like to keep track of everything my boys own. :) I don't really have a list beyond my profile list I keep up to date over on my LJ, that lists their faceup artists and their websites, eye brand/size, & wig brand, though. All the clothes & accessories I just kind of remember because I have a weird memory for that sort of thing. ^^;

And while I don't think it's necessary that other people keep track, it's really nice to know if I'm interested in buying something for sale, or see something I like in a photoshoot. That's also why I'll make a quick list of "credits" when I post a gallery thread, in case someone else is curious like I am. XD

    17. I remember the expensive items that I've purchased, but the more general day to day gear, I don't keep mind of. I don't intend to re-sell the cheaper stuff (in all honesty I don't wish to get that 3 whole dollars back! xD) so it doesn't worry me. But any expensive first hand purchases, or big name brand purchases I'll keep track of.

And any commissioned clothing or faceups, I'd plug the creator, because sharing creativity is awesome. But honestly, I don't really ever see myself asking someone where they got x item, because I don't tend to look at other people's dolls and have item envy.

    18. Hmm I don't have a big enough collection to *not* remember where I got most things, but there is no way I'm ever keeping a spreadsheet :XD: I've done enough inventory control in various jobs to want to do it in my hobbies... and I just get the things I like (and I'm pretty fussy and particular), I'm not particularly concerned at being able to rattle of my doll's specs, or keep track of prices for later resale. If I had to, I think that would take a bit of the joy out of it for me!

    19. Oh I'll never be able to remember all the individual style/colour number codes but I do always know the brand and where I bought it. (I'm like this with all my own clothes, too).
It would never have occured to me to start a spreadsheet, tbh. I really should make a list of all my doll stuff but I think the amounts would scare me.
I don't really think its a problem if people don't know, occaisionally it might be helpful to ask someone where they bought an item but not knowing certainly doesn't make you a bad doll owner. Some people are just more into keeping records than others.

    20. I know where some of my dolls things came from. Most of my dolls clothes are made by people that I know, so it's easy to remember. Wigs, not so much because some of them are one-offs.
