Why are DZ's considered cheap?

Aug 5, 2010

    1. Hello! I've heard some talk around about some people thinking that DZ is one of the cheaper companies, but I'm a bit confused by this.
I mean, the 1/3s are the same price as Angell-studio. Is their quality not as good as the others or somthing? Or is it just the different company prices? Or are they just not that popular?
I really want a DZ Mo, so I would like to know any problems they may have.

      Thanks all!

    2. When Dollzone started selling dolls, they were one of the cheapest companies at the time. Since then, more companies have popped up, many with lower prices. Some of the more established doll companies have also lowered their prices in the last year or two, due to changes in currency exchange rates. People who have been in the hobby long enough probably remember when Dollzone sold dolls at one of the lowest prices, and when they were often first dolls or budget buys, even though their price point is faily average now.

    3. DollZone has actually raised their prices over the past few years.

When I bought my Feilian, I think she was $200 with a faceup. Now they sell them for $240 blank. And when I got my Ani, I think she was $150 (maybe $180?) with a faceup whereas now she would be $195 blank.

I haven't considered them a "cheap" alternative for quite some time since their prices are pretty average.. but when they first came out, their prices were less expensive than most other companies.

.:Edit:. And to fix the title - click "edit", then under the text box area click "Go Advanced" and you can edit the thread title from there. ^^

    4. I personally don't think DZ is cheap... XD
My DZ Floy was 518 Shipped nude with faceup and thats a bit over average, right?
Also my fullset DZ kay was 325. i thought that was okay.
I see many DZ kids here on the forum. Maybe its not HUGE in popularity because its a Chinese BJD company and most are Korean and the few; Japanese?

Also to anser another question, There is nothing wrong with DZ dolls, theyre gorgeous, pose fine and are pretty heavy duty. :]

    5. Dollzone used to be the least expensive BJD company by a pretty good margin. When I first got into BJDs, Dream of Doll and Angel Region were the "cheap" companies, and then Dollzone turned up and undercut the lot of them. All the companies that are considered cheap now weren't around at the time.

Also, there's been a lot of price shuffling in the last few years, some of it due to currency adjustments -- kid delfs, for instance, have come way down in price.

    6. I wasn't in the hobby way back when DZ was the cheapest, but even if people think they are cheap, then let them think that. Everyone is allowed to have an opinion. I think DZ dolls are great dolls for those new to the hobby, the posing it amazing, same with the bodies and the quality of the resin. People also have the choice of getting fullsets which are a great choice for newbies. I find the prices to be average.

    7. Dollzone dolls are really well made, so there should be no problems with quality. They used to be much less expensive, but raised their prices a little while ago. They are well worth the cost, and are very cute. I think the reason they aren't so popular is the fact that they have molds that don't necessarily fit the conventional ideal of beauty. I think that they are too cute! :)

    8. Whilst I think there's still some stigma attached to cheap and less expensive, and I think people in the community still remember when Dollzone was the least expensive. I think for the most part DZ these days aren't considered less expensive. Not by a long shot. Let alone cheap. There's still a little social stigma, but not like it was. The point is there was a time when there were very few BJD companies, that time is gone. There are a ton of companies now, and many with their own loyal following. DZ's have a loyal fanbase. Times have changed :P

    9. I think Dollzone was, back when it started, similar to what Angel of Dream is now... An MSD from AoD is only $165 USD, which is a great price... There are people who don't like some of their face molds, as they're different than what's usually seen and expected with BJDs, but they're of general good quality... Because they have low prices and a small fanbase compared to some other companies, they're easily labelled as "cheap." I've seen AoD dolls fairly described as "Good for the money"
Anyways, I like DZ's molds and plan to get a couple. While I've never handled one personally, from what I've seen and heard they're pretty good quality.

    10. I have a DollZone and it is a great doll. I haven't owned any others, nor have I had any experience with others, so I'm not sure how it compares. The resin seems like it's a good enough quality and there is a nice amount of detail.

    11. I have a Dz Mo, and trust me you wouldn't know he was a "cheap" doll to look at him - he's got lovely, smooth, heavy resin, his seamlines have been removed and his sculpt quality is just generally fantastic.

Of course, I'm selling him now, but that's got nothing to do with his quality. :blush

    12. Dollzone used to be relatively inexpensive compared to the average price for a doll. However, as they've expanded their line and made a name for themselves, their prices have gone up so they're not much of a price break anymore.

    13. I've got one complete Dollzone (My Felian, Abby) and a Hybrid (MNF DES head on a Dollzone body, Haylee), and comparing the MNF heads resin to DZ resin, I do not see much difference in the quality. My girls are solidly build, they stand like rocks, pose generally wonderfull and have nice sculpts allround (Bodies and head). The bodies are not as ... elaborate, for a lack of a better word as the Minifee/Fairyland or Souldoll bodies I've seen/handled, especially the joints, but they are wonderfull dolls and especially if one likes their admittedly different sculpts, they are (still, even with the prices going up) very good value for comparatively low cost.

    14. I seem to recall that not only were their prices lower at the beginning but they used to use a different resin, and it seems the prices were raised around the same time that they improved their resin quality... does anyone else remember this? I can't seem to find the thread were this was originally discussed so I think the thread may have been lost in an upgrade. >_< It was back when that whole Dollzone Alliance thing was happening.

    15. I got my DollZone in OCT 2008,my boy was my very firts bjd,and still is the one completed XD!

But i can assure you that the quality is impressive, that behind what seems on promo pics, the sculp are good, and mainly poses like a dream and are solid like a rock!

Cosmo is such an handsome sculpt go for it,you won't regret this.

    16. It is just a old stigma which still remains years later, don't let it inflict in your decision.
Dollzone products nowdays are of very good quality.

    17. No, you're right there was a resin change. Actually, I think there was a couple resin changes. Because I know the pink resin is the most evident of the changes. There was also several body construct changes. The current double jointed MSD body is like Generation 3 or 4. I can't remember ._. They started putting magnets in the headcaps, etc etc. Their quality control, from what I understand, is a lot better. Anyway, yeah there is a reason for the price increase that's not completely superficial.

    18. I have a few DZ dolls, each one from a different era of their 'evolution', (a 1/4 boy with the non magnetic head cap, a 1/4 boy with the magnets but not the double jointed body, and a 1/3 double jointed), and, while I find them all very charming and lovely, there was definately an improvement in their design and resin quality. So, yes, I tihnk the price increases must reflect the increase in quality/design.
In any case, don't let people sway you with anti-DZ talk. Like a few people have said, the issues with that company have LONG since been resolved and they're now mid priced and produce very sturdy/lovely/unique dolls.

    19. I don't think much of the anti-Dollzone talk is current, but you will find some if you dig around in old threads. Some people still hold a strong grudge against Dollzone for their beginnings as a company who recast other companies' dolls. That is where they got their money as a start up company before getting in trouble going legit. I think if people still don't want to buy from them because of that, it's fair enough. I can't fault people for avoiding a company that has a shady history.

Dollzone has made improvements on their dolls and have continued to be legit and on the level for a several years now. They have won a number of people over and many people are more than happy to have Dollzone dolls in their collection. I can't fault people for that either.

Like any BJD on the market - some people like them and some people don't. Most everyone on DoA will tell you the same thing: Buy the doll you love.

    20. I own 2 dolls, and my friend owns 3.
Mine are a Resinsoul Mei and a Doll-Love Lenon, and hers are A Dollzone Floy, a Dollzone Yuu, and a Luts KD Cherry boy.
I envy her Floy and Yuu more then anything. They are so durable and gorgeous. Compared to my 60cm, hers is heavier, and thicker, which I think is a good quality in a doll. The size draws a lot of attention. Also, when she first got her Floy, he was white. After playing in the sun and taking him to Florida, of course, he yellowed. But that is one of the reasons I find him gorgeous. This might just be her luck, but he yellowed SO EVENLY that you can't tell that he isn't supposed to look that way!!
Our other mutual friend and I have decided though, if she dies, I get the Yuu, she gets the Cherry, and the Floy gets to be buried with her. :P hahahah
