Why aren't there more planthros?

Mar 25, 2013

    1. I love Dollzone's Anson, and I'm disappointed there aren't more scultps like that. Someone told me it was because the petals would break during shipping. Are there other reasons though?

    2. I really like the planthros. I think perhaps because they're such a new concept, other companies haven't followed Dollzone into making them, and perhaps Dollzone themselves are looking into ways that they can make beautiful planthros, but with less breakage?

    3. Oh I hope you're right about that! I would love to see Dollzone make more planthros, especially if they could make them more durable.

    4. I imagine the molding and casting process is pretty time consuming and difficult -- there are so many delicate pieces that are probably pretty tricky to cast. Planthros are lovely, though!

    5. Perhaps it's just not what's in demand right now unfortunately :( I've never handled one of these styles of dolls, but if they're that fragile then maybe companies shy away from them.

    6. I know Impldoll has a little guy called Harley that has some plant characteristics but that's about the closest I've ever seen.

    7. The idea is really new and I think after Dollzone having to take them out of production because of casting issues (obviously fragile parts) other companies might be scared to try it themselves. Or they might simply not be interested. There's only a handful of companies that are really interested in making strange and out of the ordinary dolls.
But to be honest, I don't think any future plant doll will top Anson and Moment lol :B

    8. I think there's just not much demand. Before DollZone's Moment/Anson release, I had certainly never thought "hey, you know what I really want? A doll with flowery arms and petals all over its head!"

Anthro-dolls kind of grow naturally out of a few different ideas (catgirls and other anthro characters common in anime, not to mention all the anthropomorphised animals in Western cartoons, plus a multitude of 'humanoid animals' in various mythologies). There's nothing really like that for planthros (that I know of, at least. Even Greek dryads were usually portrayed as regular-looking humans, not half-human, half-tree people).

I hope more companies try out the idea, though. I'd love to one day have a planthro doll in my collection!

    9. Ha ha this! I wouldn't bother to try a planthro in the future were I a sculptor...why bother? It's been done so well, and then discontinued due to legitimate issues. It might be so daunting for companies, that it's not something they want to try (unless it's a very limited release).

I have to say, as gorgeous as Anson and Moment are, they scare the hell out of me. My roommate has one and I'm afraid to get near her. She's so frail looking!

Then there's another side to the whole planthro thing...annoyance. I have one, she's got Dollzone's Renata vine arms, and she "grabs" onto everything! I've almost dropped both her and whatever doll she's sitting next too on my Mini shelf dozens of times. As much as I love her, she's hard to deal with because the arms seem to have a mind of their own, and just do whatever they want. Someday I'd like to get her human arms blushed so she can be easier...but then I'd have unstring those vines....and then restring them in the future if I wanted to use them again. Just the thought.... DX
For a lot of companies it's possible the negatives outweigh the positives, and they won't even attempt.

That said I do love them...I think they're SO well sculpted and different. I even like the few not done by DZ: Impledoll and Leekeworld are the only ones that come to mind, and I think LW only has parts, not whole dolls (??).

    10. I like planthros thanks to Legend of Mana and some lore. But I didn't know they had bjd versions! Interesting.....

    11. I had no idea they were so hard to maintain and handle,I don't have any of my own. Maybe I could fill the void by making flower outfits and hair pieces,or even some modding.

    12. I have Anson but there is another easier planthro that Dollzone made - their little flower fairies which I also have. They had petal head and arms and were probably where the idea for the larger models came from. I also have Harley - well the body, I switched out the head for Aimee as the eye shape were more druid like.

If any more planthros come up I will probably be one of the first to purchase them

    13. I loved the little flower fairies too! I almost forgot about them. I was going to get one but I got a Realpuki instead.

    14. I always thought Leeke's "ent" dolls were pretty spiffy! Especially the entaurs (are they planthros?)~ I guess there's not very much demand for dolls with plant-parts, so companies may not want to take the risk of making them? I'd like to see a proper dryad doll, sculpted to look wooden/tree-like, all twiggy and leafy~:D

    15. I didn't know there were ent dolls! I'm going to have to look that up! Dryad dolls would be awesome,I agree.

I just looked at the ents,I want one! :D

    16. I love planthros! My MiniGem Soom Uyoo is based off a mushroom fairy, and I just got a secondhand Dollzone Moment!

I'm currently modding a doll with bark texture and with branches coming out. I'm making them slotted pegs so that I can transport him without having things snap off. Will post pictures!

I absolutely fell in love with these little entlings! So cute!!!! :D

    17. Elfdoll made some tiny flower-headed dolls, similar to the DZ flower fairies, years ago... So there have been some others...

I would think that some company or other might try a planthro again sometime... It's just that there are so many different kinds of dolls to make that people might want... and so many that companies might want to design and sell, that planthros probably aren't top of the list. But I'm sure there will be more someday.

    18. I sort of made my own. I really, really like plant-people...probably because of the Sims. lol Also Perfuma from She-Ra cartoons as a kid.... Anyway, this is Leif Forrester. My wife bought him for me and together we commissioned someone to give him a leaf on his face and his ears are also painted like leaves themselves. He's meant to be sort of an elf/sprite of the forest and made of plant. lol

Seriously, what else would you do with a green doll? XD

    19. He's gorgeous! I love how the ears are shaped like leaves too. Ha,I remember the She-Ra cartoons too, that might be why I like planthros..
You just gave me an idea-I might mod a doll into a planthro sometime. That's a long way off because I don't have the skill right now,but I definitely want to do it someday. Thanks for sharing that pic :)

    20. Planthros, I haven't seen any pictures of a doll like that, it sounds way cool though! Fin, your plant boy is beautiful! I love the detail in his ear!

Edit: Looked up a picture of Anson and wow such a cool doll!
