Why don't dolls come with clothes?

Aug 8, 2014

    1. I don't know. Probably just me. I am still new and don't know the full cost and work that goes into a bjds. I am curious what others think. I just feel that if you are going to spend hundreds of dollars on a doll they should include even just a simple outfit. Not necessarily the default one which is often elaborate. But a simple outfit, wig and shoes. It is just they are so expensive and maybe just me but having a naked doll with nothing. Curious what others think.

    2. I think it would be really nice if they came with some simple underwear. But, I can understand why they don't usually come with anything. Designing and making clothes is a totally separate thing from making resin dolls so they'd probably have to buy them in from another company or partner up with someone and that would either eat in to their profit margin or put prices up even more!

I like it when companies have clothes available to buy (of their own or another brand) on their website because then you can choose something that you know should fit that doll right away so you have something to put them in when they arrive. That's especially good if it's your first doll or a weird size one! When I bought my doll from DDoll shop they had clothes from other brands on their website but unfortunately most were sold out so I had to order directly from nine 9 style instead and the doll arrived before the clothes and wig.

    3. There are some companies that will ship your doll in underwear so they aren't completely naked. Some other companies even offer a random wig and most give you random eyes. However, most companies don't send their dolls with clothes unless you are buying a full set. Sometimes, you might get an outfit as a gift, but that mostly only happens during an event. I think the dolls come to you as they are because they are meant to be customized. You are suppose to make them into what you want, and I think choosing their wardrobe is a part of that. Doll clothing is expensive. For that reason, I make almost all of my doll clothes. So, I don't mind my dolls arriving to me in their birthday suit.

    4. Well , when I bought my first boy they sent him in a bath robe which was cute , and also included a pair of eyes and a random wig which was very useful starting out . Also , I found bluefairy had some nice basic full-sets which were really cute . It was a grey uniform which could be bought along with all their basic dolls if you chose to and it wasn't that much extra , but This was almost 4-5 years ago , and I haven't browsed their site since so I really don't know if they still do that .

But I think the main reason that they don't do that is that people have different visions for the same bjd and not all would need/want the basic outfit , which would be extra work in the process of making the doll , so I think that is why they don't do it .

    5. This is something you should put some time and effort into learning.

"Expensive" doesn't translate into "high profit margin" when it comes to dolls. I would rather pay less for a doll with no extras than pay a little more for extras that I'll probably never use (one of my dolls came with an outfit, and I never used it). Dolls are meant to be blank slates for customization; why spend the extra money to put in something that nine times out of ten won't be used by the person receiving it? Some companies will throw in a wig or eyes or something as an extra little gift, but that's how they should be regarded -- as gifts. The company doesn't HAVE to do that.

It's possible to purchase simple basics for a reasonable amount of money, especially on the MP here. There's no need to go broke clothing your doll.

    6. Personally, I agree--that clothes are important. But I don't sew...

I think many people want to sew for their dolls so they wait for their doll to arrive and then think about making clothes and don't want to buy clothes. I think that's fair enough. Not everyone wants to buy clothes.

Often underwear doesn't work for boys--makes it hard to fit into tight trousers sometimes. Girls can always use underwear, but maybe the owner prefers a different style? I've never received any with my dolls automatically, and I don't really worry about it.

I love buying clothes for dolls. It's important to me (I just love so many of the styles and the tailoring). But everyone needs to decide what to do individually. There is no right or wrong way to do things with dolls. :)

    7. I do sew my own clothing. But Its nice to get something as a gift from the doll company you are buying from at least a wig or shirt. You are paying allot and waiting 2 to 4 months for the doll in some cases.

    8. I'm glad that they don't all come with clothes. Mostly my dolls wear no underwear, if they wear pants, so I probably wouldn't need it. Also I think people would then be annoyed if the free random clothing they get isn't to their liking, not their doll's style, etc. It's a bit like random wigs/eyes. I think there was a thread about that somewhere as well.
Maybe I say that because I also sew for my dolls, but I wouldn't want clothes to come with them that I probably wouldn't use anyway.

    9. I won't lie…I wouldn't mind if companies tossed in a free pair of undies with the doll. I'd personally rather have the undies than the eyes or wig - you always read/hear about temporary wigs and eyes but not really temporary undies...

In the end I'd much rather the company or artist spend time developing a new sculpt concept and send me the blank doll without anything else besides bad weather/luck to delay shipping. But I really do appreciate any extras they toss in.:)

    10. I really have little interest in them coming with clothing, because I often don't care for the clothes they DO come with. My IMPLdoll Bella came with a very....strange.....red pleather dress with sheer train that didn't fit her properly and I ended up giving away. Several of my dolls (AoD, Mystic Kids, Only Doll) came with underwear, which were very basic but useful, and I appreciated that. Quite a few have come with a free wig (usually fur or cheaply made fiber) or shoes, and most came with eyes. My Only Doll boy came with PJ pants, which were cute but not very useful. I think this is why most companies offer fullset options--you can get a complete doll if you aren't interested in buying/making your own clothes, wig and faceup, or you can save money and get them blank. Most also have options of extras to buy so your doll isn't blank and you can choose clothes. I think including a full outfit or nice wig would likely make prices go up, at least $10-20 dollars, maybe more, and I don't really want to pay extra for items I won't use.

I'd rather pay for just a blank, naked doll than pay extra for clothes, wig, shoes and eyes that I can't use and don't interest me. O course, I DO appreciate surprise extras, that's awesome! Just not if it means production cost, and therefor buyer costs, go up.

    11. When I buy a doll I choose what eyes, wig, clothes, shoes, etc. that I want for her/him and purchase them at the same time or while I'm waiting for the doll to arrive. I'd rather pay that extra money up front so that when my new doll arrives I already have an outfit I've chosen for her/him to wear because I wouldn't want the poor thing to be naked, haha.

I do think it would be nice if a new doll came with some underwear or something, but it's easy enough to just buy underwear for your doll either from the same company or, if they don't stock it, from elsewhere. Doll underwear is usually pretty cheap anyway.

    12. Almost always with my MSD's, I rarely if ever buy them pre-made clothing unless it's on sale or something that I know I can't make myself that easily (Which that window is slowly shrinking as my skills have increased.) shoes, is a mandatory but even those I'm learning to make... Just love keychain shoes too much to give that up for good. Cheap and effective.

For me, I like the sewing aspect, it's fun to take that naked doll and give them something that is "their's" and only theirs. For each of my MSD's it started as a learning curve, until MSD number three, which at that point I was comfortable enough with the size that it came easily. It actually got a little harder to sew for smaller dolls, but I got there again.

So for me...A company outfit whilst it would be appreciated, I don't think I'd probably use it beyond possibly if it came with underwear and pants keeping those and then splitting it up among my trio (hopefully soon to be quartet) of MSD's.

    13. Another option is to keep an eye out for events that companies have, sometimes you will get a free wig or eyes or a full set outfit if they are running an event during the time you decide to purchase ^^

    14. I prefer that they don't come with clothes. I like to dress mine in clothes I choose so I hate to get a default outfit, dislike it and then have to go through the painful process of selling it. :doh

    15. A lot of companies don't make clothing- just dolls- so it's an extra cost and they'd have to order this stuff, keep it in stock, and it would probably raise their prices a bit. The same goes for free eyes. If a company offers clothing, I'll often get some at the same time I'm ordering the doll so I know my new bjd won't be naked when they arrive.

Angel of Dream dolls come with underwear (and sometimes fur wigs, I believe?), which I think is rather cute. Depends on the company though. I ordered an Impldoll tiny and a pair of eyes once and they threw in an outfit and a wig as a surprise. Their fullset clothing is also very affordable.

    16. I agree it'd be nice if every doll came with some simple underwear at least, or something like a "night gown"!
But it'd fine the way it is, if I'm paying a lot for a doll then I'm also more than willing to buy them their outfits~

    17. This very topic is why thrift stores and free patterns became my very good friends... My doll only had two outfits, not counting shoes, that I didn't make. And one of those was a trade... I'm not perfect at sewing by a long shot in the dark, but I love making clothes for my precious little girl. I learn what to do, and what not to do with every garment she has. As a result, she has more clothes than either of us know what to do with... :sweat

    18. I figure dolls are expensive enough without little things like clothing and shoes. I'd rather they kept the price as low as possible. I probably wouldn't like the default clothes anyway, so it would just be a waste of money and materials.

    19. My 5Star tiny came with underpands and a little strapless underdress kind of thing, which was lovely. But I prefer them to come undressed so I can choose the clothes myself. I've never considered buying a full set doll, because I've never liked the clothes and accessories enough to justify the extra cost.
