Why larger dolls?

Nov 17, 2012

    1. I guess there is a trend, whether it's conscious or not, in the US today, of houses becoming smaller. Some relate this to population density, some think it's psychological somehow. Either way, there is less and less space in homes today--personally, I spent most of my life in a big family, living where there was very little space. If I'm going to collect something, I would rather it be a small thing so that it doesn't take up so much space. But that's just me. I'm only one opinion.

So I was just wondering, why, with this diminishing size trend, why big dolls?

Is it quality over quantity? Do you have no intention to buy more dolls? Are they a replacement for children that you can't have or can't stand or maybe you're not ready for children yet? Does their size make it easier for you to dress them and give them face-ups and put their pieces back together when you unstring your large doll? Do they maybe make better companions than a YoSD or MSD? Maybe it's the only size you can find the age that you want your character to be?

Anyway, please set my misconceptions straight. I'm curious to learn why people like SDs.

    2. That's a good question and the answer is.. I have no idea. I do own a Pukifee and after her I recieved my Dollzone Tulip and she is about 62cm so it was quite a change. When I first got my Tulip I thought "oh my gosh she's huge! I dont think I can handle another doll this big but, ever since I've been looking at nothing but big dolls. I'm currently waiting on a Feeple60 Miyu(55cm) and I'm also saving up for an S.I.D (65cm). I just like having big dolls I guess. I think my Pong Pong is adorale and I might get another small one at some point but for now it seems like big dolls are what my brain says I should get haha

    3. I prefer the bigger dolls because of the style of clothes that come in their size. And the maturity of their faces match with their body. I don't get why a lot of these companies make msd's with kid faces with bodies with big busts. And also it seems the bigger the doll the more details the hands and feet have. That's just my opinion. :)

    4. I had an MSD. My reason for choosing a larger doll is because there are more diverse options for clothing, and the faces are not childish. Also, if I ever decide to take up sewing again, a large doll is much easier to sew for.

    5. For me it's not the size of my home or the size of the doll -- it's whether or not I fall in love with the sculpt.

That said, there are some dolls that I consider too big for me, such as anything over 65 cm. I have small hands. If a doll is so large that I can't hold it comfortably, I won't buy it. I also consider whether or not I will be able to restring a doll. The bigger the doll, the more help I'm going to need holding the doll and pulling the elastic.

I do love many of the larger sculpts, especially the realistic sculpts from Iplehouse. It seems to me that the larger dolls enable the sculptor to show more detail and expression, and that appeals to me aesthetically as a collector.

Sewing is easier for larger dolls. Clothing parts that are too small for the sewing machine have to be sewn by hand and that's no fun. Clothing for larger dolls can show more detail.

    6. I really agree about the faces being more mature, matching the body more. I also think that when I'm looking at a 40-45cm doll I tend to go, "oh, but for ___ dollars more I could get this 60-65cm doll, and it's even prettier..."

I've tried looking only at smaller dolls, but that weird way of thinking trips me up every time. :P

    7. While I don't own any large dolls for many of the reasons you brought up, I do LIKE them beter, because in general, I prefer a companies SD or larger sized sculpts over anything smaller. Their male sculpts especially just look more adult. More "handsome man" and less "teenage bishi" and Hey. I like the pretty boy look too; but the larger sculpts just appeal to me more overall

    8. I have large dolls because I have no choice. D8 Like with Syri, I want mature faces and they don't make them smaller than UNWIELDY.

    9. I love larger dolls because their sheer size make them very much huggable, they are much more fun to dress, and the large wigs are super fun to style. I personally don't like mature faces on larger dolls, a large girl with a cute little face is so cuddly :D

    10. I feel the same way as Hypercurve. I find larger dolls more huggable, more enjoyable to shop for and wigs just seem to look so much better on them. I also love the weight of larger dolls, the way they feel in my hand. I have had mostly MSDs throughout my time in the hobby, but I've found I enjoy taking care of and shopping for larger dolls so much more. Granted, a smaller doll has it's own conveniences and is so delicate and petite in your hands. But anyway, huggable dolls win big for me. :)

    11. Hmm, I'm kind of old-fashioned in my tastes so I'll weigh in here. For reference, I'm quite small, 5'4" and capable of wearing children's gloves, etc.

I just like big dolls? As the OP says, I don't have a lot of space. I choose to keep my collection pretty small, because I honestly just love big dolls. I like the weight and their size in relation to me. I like sewing for and painting all sizes, so that's really not a factor. My big dolls are SD/SD13s and look about as young as the more common minis anymore so that's not it either. Everyone likes different things, and we make space for what we really love. :aheartbea

    12. What do you mean 'smaller than unwieldy'?

    13. I suppose moste people like larger dolls because it is easier to find adult faces and good clothes. If you want an adult doll is almost impossible to find a proper face in MSD (and don't even try to find it among smaller sizes...)

I really don't like dolls to be that big. Even YoSD look big to me (Lol), but would like to find "grown up" dolls in smaller sizes :(

    14. The larger dolls are more mature & realistic, & MUCH easier to sew detailed clothing for. I'm doing photo stories so this is important for me. Plus the smaller dolls (I do have some MSDs & Tinies) are wonderfully to scale as children for the larger dolls.

    15. I'm not satisfied with SDs, I need 68cm - 72cm, lol.
To start off, the larger the doll is, the more mature the sculpts you end up getting.
I'm not particularly into cutesy dolls or just pretty dolls. I like beautiful ones.
Besides, I have a preference for large chests, and generally you don't get those with MSDs, and definitely not YoSDs.
And yes, I do agree that the smaller dolls are not really worth the money for the size. The flat rate for the construction of the doll is just too high.
There is no quantity over quality when picking a large size. In fact generally the larger sculpts tend to be more detailed, and you can get a lot more stuff in the faceups. The clothing is just a lot easier to sew, and the clothing you buy is a lot more detailed. :)
Furthermore, the space I have does not affect which size I choose. If I really have to, I will roll all my dolls under my bed when I'm not playing with them, lol. :shudder
And lastly, there's that feeling of substance when I hold a large doll, it just feels right in my hands, I guess.
I apologize if this makes no sense, lol.

    16. In the UK houses tend to be a lot smaller than in the US, in fact new homes in the UK are the smallest in Europe so we have a lot less space to keep anything. Luckily dolls can be kept on shelves or existing furniture so having a smaller house doesn't stop people collecting, it's storing the boxes that I find difficult. I like SD size dolls myself and wouldn't buy smaller dolls just due to the size of my house, I prefer them for many reasons, maturity of face sculpt, mature bodies, just that they are bigger in general. The larger size sets them apart from other 'toy' dolls or collectable figures for me too.

    17. why larger dolls?

      the clothes details show better
      they are more mature
they feel less-like "children" dolls XD
the clothes are easier to sew
i feel like iam getting more for my money....
anyways, my room is HUGE, so i don't have a problem with space. we are planning on buying a house soon with an extra room only for my dollies, so, i should be alright ;)

    18. XD It's pretty simple. I put unwieldy because imo, they're so big they're hard to handle. In other words, they don't make mature dolls smaller than "too big", imo.

    19. For me I feel like larger dolls are easier to dress and keep a grip on. I'm extremely clumsy and it'd be harder for me to drop a bigger doll than something smaller like a pukifee.

    20. I chose 60-70cm dolls because they are easier for me to customize. I actually started with 27cm Dollfie Plus dolls for my characters, but quickly realized that there was not enough variety in the sculpts and that I simply couldn't paint faces at that scale. Making clothing and jewelry for larger dolls is worlds easier, and I can actually see their faces to paint them! :) They do take up a ton of room though and our apartment is at capacity!
