Would anyone break a doll for the sake of "art?"

Aug 30, 2006

    1. I don't even know where this question came from but I was thinking about it ever since I've seen some pretty deep puncture wounds, cracks, scars and so on.

Example, that school A with the hole in his hand. WOW!! I mean just WOW!! He's beautiful. As well as nezimootos(mispelling) sorry =/ scars on the back of her doll.
These people have the bullocks to do that to a doll so I was just wondering if anyone else would ever break all their doll for the full effect of a character?

Would you break it and piece it back together etc..... I'm hoping this will be a nice mature discussion instead of "OMG, ARE YOU INSANE OMG LOLZ." Thank You. I've very interested to hear everyones reactions.

And I put "art" in quotations because not everyone sees holes through hands a form of art, but others do so yeah o_o

    2. Hmm, I don't think actually breaking a doll into bits would be wise.

With pretty much anything, if you break it into little bits, you'll always have tiny bits and sherds that go missing 'cause they're so tiny. So putting your doll back together again would be really difficult. Even if you did break it into big bits, it'll still feel a bit rough where you glued it back together.

I don't know but I'd never do it. It's one thing to scar a doll out of beauty but to actually BREAK it? I'd advise that you do that with a doll that doesn't cost 500 bucks.

    3. In short, yes.

If I had a chacarter who had deep scars, eye wounds, hand wounds I'd so be all for it. None of my chacarters (currently) have any of that..though if I decide to get dolls of some of my extended cast I may end up with some pretty mamied looking dolls. I love extreme mods. ^_^

    4. I don't think if you were doing it for art or a like purpose that you mentioned it would be considered breaking. I think it would be considered customization. ^_^

    5. Eh, well that guro kind of art really isn't my thing, so no. Most scars and battle damage can be done without permanently damaging the doll, anyway. I've seen some Japanese photo art of disassembled or cracked BJDs which is kind of... odd to me, since I don't really understand art. I think they're all one-off artist's dolls, which are often done in stoneclay instead of resin (resin can be pretty hard to break!).

    6. *raises hand* Fuan's the one with the scars on his back and his brother Fanuel has them spanning half his face so there's my answer already -haha [also, the one with the hole in his hand is an F29 <--pretty sure]

I think though, it depends on the reason they are being done. Fuan and Fanuel's scars have a reason and a story, which is why I did them. I have others who are "clean" and have no flaws and I wouldn't scar them or tattoo them unless I had an actual reason to do them.

So I would prolly never break one or scar them or put holes in them just for the sake of art, there would have to be a reason behind whatever so-called flaw they'd have since they aren't just dolls to me, they are characters [like the fact that one of Shura's ears is broken and capped. I actually took off a section of his ear and capped it since it's what he has and apart of him. But I wouldn't do that to any others unless it was something they had, or the fact that his body will be a modded girl body <-- which is needed because he's supposed to be small and femme, easily mistaken for a girl, so a boy body wouldn't do, hense that type of mod needed] ^_^

    7. I don't think I would actually /break/ a Doll, considering how much I spent for my first and at the moment only Doll ($364 is not something you waste by breaking the object purchased with said money)... but I'm all up for scars. In fact, one of my planned Dolls is going to have some scarring on his face, neck, and back. XD

    8. *eyeballs*

      no.

    9. i would. infact i plan to. i have two dead boys coming up soon who were torn apart savagly... especially December, hes got a chunk of his neck missiing and his face on the right side is torn into shreds... so ill have to break off small pieces to put them back. i also have three drows planned and one of themm will need heavy modding, taking peices from his face and the sort.

    10. No eyeballing back!! XD!

and X_Kazakai_X!! wow, I'm really really looking foward to seeing that! Are you really going to be chunking away small pieces of his neck? o_o? Awesome! AND two dolls mind you! Two dead dolls. How are you planning to glue them back though?

    11. lmao yes i am. i plan on heating it and sort of resculpting it too. im not sure how ill get it to stick again >.> i have to do some more research but i will if it ikills me. my dead boys are gonna be the next set of mods i do. so within the next year or so they will be done *.* after that my drows, and Mitsu will take FOREVER to do.. i have to mod his entire body and face... hes gonna have raises in his skin, so epoxy i think for taht. either way im planning on damaged bodies to begin with so itll make it more fun! ^.^ its just money...i may be broke but its onlny money and theyre gona make me happy so thats all that counts ^.^

    12. Yep. But I love doll-parts/unpainted dolls almost as much (if not more) than the 'finished' ones, sometimes - I always have a lot of trouble making myself put mine back together when I'm repainting/stringing, because I love seeing how they go together, and all the parts ^^; This is a pretty long-standing quirk, though - I've made dolls for years, and many of them have parts missing, or are installation-art as a doll-in-pieces.

BJD-wise, a number of mine will/do have painted/scupted scars, but I'm also considering doing some more...permenant mods to a few of them.

Oh - and adding to the list of examples, I think Leechy has a Yder whose face has been slashed in places - personally, I think he looks amazing, but it does make you do a bit of a double-take. There's also a zombie/ragdoll (sorry, can't remember, er, which) on the forum who's got stitches sculpted on.

    13. I would do it, in the sense that I wish to modify an existing sculpt with putty. Then I would make a mould for the modified head so I could have a seamless all-resin head, and make ONE cast. Then I would smash the original head and destroy the mould, to avoid copyright issues.

    14. nice nice!! I would one day want to destroy a head....as weird and crazy as that may sound, yeah.....

    15. Break for art, no.

'Damage' in the name of modding? Yes. I plan on helping a friend hack the fingers off a doll, and given half a chance I'd be punching drills holes and metal pieces into another to make the character (luckily, I lack money for a doll for him).

onegreyelephant has a fantastic modded boy with a hole in his hand among other 'damage' and it suits the character and it looks awesome.

    16. My answer would be plain and simple
      NO!!!!!!!!

I wouldn't mod my doll cause I don't know how do mod a doll and don't want to "Learn from Mistakes"
      (Yep I'm a coward...:sweat )

I wouldn't re-do my doll's face up cause the only face up I can do properly is on my face with actual eye shadows and lipsticks. Not to mention the fact I don't need to draw my own eyebrow :|
      (Again I'm a coward :sweat )

I definitely wouldn't break mydolls for the sake of ART....
      Because I don't like modern art......Especially the post-modern sort of stuff....-.-+
I was completely baffled when a prestiegous art award was given to a piece of work consisted of switching an light bulb on and off one year and a very messy bedroom the next year....:sweat

    17. One of my future characters is a puppet and so I have to make holes in her hands and feet to pull the strings through.
But I have to say... I'm very reluctant to start the project even though she's an
idea I really want to see finished. But what if anything goes wrong during the proces?

Right now, I'm thinking of making my own BJD, so I can practice on a clay-doll before casting her into something more permanent like resin.

    18. uhm..I'm planning to chop the boobies of from a girl body, is that breaking? ^^;; Anyway, I'm all for non conventional modding, as long as you know what you're doing and you're not actually breaking the doll as in that it's not what you wanted it to be anymore..or that it became to fragile to play with, or anything like that, you know? But if your character has a hole in his hand and you know how to drill a hole in his hand..then go for it.

In my case, the doll's supposed to be a perfect combination between man and woman, so I want a girl body and then modify it..because the asexual bodies that are there aren't at all what I envisioned for him/her because it's not supposed to be asexual-it's the opposite, it's supposed to still be sexual even though it doesn't have anything that you can point at and say 'it's a guy' or 'it's a girl' So, I don't really think modding the body is breaking, more like creating something new, you know?

    19. *grabs her own breast* ouch!!! x_x But goodness, that sounds very interesting. And well, I also agree, if you know how to do it, then feel free to do so since it's your own doll. I wish I knew how to do such things.. I can already picture the puppet doll as well.

    20. Yes, sure I would if I had a specific "piece" in mind. The problem is I'd have to get another doll for it as I've personified my own "crew" to the point where it would hurt my feelings to do anything violent to them. I can't even pierce thier ears.
