1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Your favorite thing in the hobby

Feb 18, 2014

    1. Okay, so I did a quick search for this and didn't see anything, but there were 11 pages so I may have missed over it. If there's already a topic for this go ahead and delete this :) Kind of very general search words lol

Whenever I show some one my dolls they always ask the typical questions, what are they? Where do you get them? How much are they? But I noticed that all of my friends, once they get used to my dolls always ask the same thing: What do you do with them? Now, I know everyone has different things in this hobby they love. I personally just like my dolls being there, in the future I'd like to try a photo story. I also love doing face ups.

But what about you guys? What's your favorite thing in this hobby? Is it that feeling you get when you open a new doll? Dressing them up and putting them on display? Creating characters for them? Or could it be you love walking around with them and seeing peoples reactions to a doll being carried by a grown man or woman? It could be something else entirely.

      What's your favorite thing?

    2. I'm an artist and I love thumbnails so, I love have in my mind an history, with characters design (that then I draw, ...or not hehehe) but I think that what I like about it is find or make a suitable stage (dioramas), make the clothing and accessories and TIC!! TIC!! TIC!! (*Canon on my hand to take pic nonstop*) oooooooooooouug but it isn't all... then, I have to edit on PS... so cool, I love it ^^ ... but I hate collecting all the mess, I hate it so much xD

    3. My favourite thing about this hobby is knowing that each doll is so customizable, there is no limit to what one can do with the doll.

Sometimes it feels overwhelming because I have so many contradictory ideas for one doll, but in that overwhelming is the sense of freedom and expression that I don't get in a lot of things. I know if I mess up, I can usually fix it. If I can't fix it, I can always go another direction with the doll or get a new doll and try again.

    4. I love so many things about this hobby. The dolls themselves, creating and owning unique works of art, making the clothes and putting them on the dolls, having the dolls to look at, admire, and--yes!--play with, showing them off to other people who feel as I do about dolls, making up the stories and histories and personalities and feelings and thoughts and reactions of the various characters represented by the dolls...Really, the fun never ends for me. Nor does it ever have to. Even if I never get another doll, ever, in my life, I can go on enjoying the beauties I have. And if I should get another doll, it will just be another to join in the fun.

    5. this is just THE BEST hobby I've ever come across in 50 years - because it fulfils so many different needs and develops so many different creative skills - although I confess my favourite thing is buying my dolls clothes and shoes LOL - I am a shopaholic!

    6. I think my favourite things are the customization (face ups, buying clothes, wigs, eyes, etc.) and the interaction (hanging out with them, spending time and bonding with them, also talking to people in the community).

It's just a very satisfying hobby and gives me something to work on or think about when there's nothing else to do.

    7. I love character development, and whereas before BJD I would do that in art and writing, now with dolls I can have a 3D canvas. That's my favourite thing.

    8. My favorite thing is when a plan comes together perfectly. I love finding a doll and all the pieces needed to create a finished look.

    9. My favorite thing is creating characters and watching them grow over the years. :)

    10. Getting a blank base (Doll) and then working to put the character's look and image together, then the satisfaction of having them "completed"

    11. All the things I've come to learn and the clothes/shoes that are available. I also love being able to do whatever the hell I want with my dolls,no matter what anyone might have to say about it.

    12. I love dressing dolls, shopping for clothes and accessories, making clothes, thinking about clothes, sketching (fairly bad) drawings of outfit ideas. Yep. It's 90% about the clothes for me!

    13. Darn that's a hard question... haha. I love too many things. But i think my absolute favorite is to make my dolls look like they're real people. The pictures were you have to look twice to realize it's a doll. I love seeing and creating those.

    14. Same as with the other types of dolls I've collected all my life - I play with them. Dress and redress them, their personalities and relationships to each other become apparent and evolve.

I think my absolute favourite part is when new details of their interplay between each other becomes apparent. It would be the designing and making of new outfits for them (that suit their style, colouring, and personalities) but I don't have enough time to sew all the garments that pop into my head for them so that side is rather frustrating as a result.

Most of my SD and MSD size gang are siblings in a big extended family - the convoluted family connections and how they interact is a constant source of new details and inspirations in my play with them. The slim mini's and smaller mini's (Unoa chibi and Little Junior Ai size) are a different group - friends mostly unrelated to one-another in the family way, and the way I play with them is different - more the dressing-and-posing type of play.

The teenie-tinies (Puki's and Banji's) are a distinct group of their own, and will inhabit the dollshouse castle I'm goign to get around to building and decorating (real-soon-now-honest) so that's a different type of play again.

    15. My favourite thing about this hobby is actually other peoples dolls...I know that must sound really strange >w<

I love going on Flickr or DA or even Facebook and just looking at what other people have made. The thing that drew me into the hobby was if you typed in a dolls sculpt, there is a massive chance you won't find two dolls that look the same!

I chop and change my doll family a lot, there are constant changes in my family, I trade a lot, but it means that I get to own a lot of different sculpts with all kinds of faceups! It's really exciting and it connects you with so many people!
Also if they're second hand you can argue they've come from all over the world instead of just Asia.

    16. My favorite thing about them is playing with them. Not displaying them on a shelf or in a cabinet like other types of collector dolls but actually playing with them and being able to change their looks if I get a sudden inspiration.

    17. My favourite thing is doing face-ups. Seeing a face come to life under your hands is just awesome.

    18. What I like to do most changes from time to time. My number one favorite thing will always be sculpting, but occasionally I perfer to redress my dolls, to make pictures of them, to simply hold them and look at how well they're sculpted, or changing their wigs and eyes.

    19. Face ups, I like to use face up to give my doll a characteristic. But I rarely change their face up after once I draw it, it is because I think it is already a part pf this character.

    20. I actually like the aspect where you can see the variety of other people's BJDs. The possibilities are endless! I've been in this hobby for over a year and have seen so many different dolls and yet to come across two that are similar. I love seeing the creativity everyone exhibits and the way the dolls come to life.
